18 Hours at Round Top With an Interior DesignerThe gasps could’ve been heard from three tents away. It was collective at first: a resounding “oh my goodness!” signaling to the shop owners and passersby that a treasure had been unearthed. It’s the call of victory in Round Top, where vintage items such as the newly found Venetian mirror drive hordes of antique vendors, shop owners, and junk lovers to the pine-tree-and-wildflower-lined, eleven-mile stretch of tents and barns for two weeks every March and October. The silver mirror, resembling a stretched octagon in shape, is etched with floral designs and has a scalloped edge. Found in the Summit Mercantile tent at Blue Hills, the piece officially became the first thrill of the day for interior designer Audrey Scheck and her eight-woman team of treasure hunters.…

Charles-Butt-Texas-HEB-Grocery-Store-CEO-GOP-School-ChoiceUp against the wall, Charles Butt! The Jacobins in the GOP have a new enemy, and it’s the 86-year-old chairman of Texas’s beloved grocery chain, H-E-B. This weekend, party officials in four counties in East and Southeast Texas voted to condemn the “Democrat billionaire” for involving himself in “advocating for policies contrary to the Republican Party of Texas platform.” Among Butt’s alleged offenses against the party: —Advocating against “election integrity.” (Ahead of the 2020 election, Butt publicly supported Harris County, home to Houston, in its quest to send mail-in ballots to all eligible voters.)—Lobbying “against parents’ God-given rights and against empowering parents to choose the education that is best for their children.” (It’s unclear what “God-given rights” Butt opposes—in general, the resolution is poorly worded—but otherwise,…

beyonce country crossoverWhen Beyoncé announced more details on her forthcoming Cowboy Carter, she did so with a statement that clarified some speculation about whether she was aiming to cross over to country music: “This ain’t a Country album,” she wrote on Instagram. “This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”In making that declaration, Beyoncé did more than just announce what fans might expect when they press play on Cowboy Carter for the first time on March 29. She also acknowledged a reality about the Nashville establishment that’s controlled much of country music since the Grand Ole Opry was built back in 1925. While her single “Texas Hold ’Em” has dominated the country charts since its release in early February (at the time of publication, it had held the top spot…

The options can be overwhelming at modern barbecue joints. Which of the half-dozen meats, eight sides, or four desserts—not to mention the specials—do you choose? The team at Goldee’s Barbecue, in Fort Worth, decided to ease that burden when it opened Ribbee’s in a repurposed Sonic this month. As the name suggests, Ribbee’s serves only ribs, and they all come in the same $20 meal box with fries, slaw, and a roll. The only catch is you’ll have to get out of your car despite the familiar drive-in setting.Jonny White, Jalen Heard, and Lane Milne are all co-owners of Ribbee’s, as they are at Goldee’s, but this has been White’s baby. Barbecue wasn’t cheap in early 2020 when they first opened Goldee’s (currently our number…

Rodney Reed during a hearing in Bastrop on November 25, 2014.Twelve strangers gathered around a table in an upper room of a Bastrop courthouse. Bags of crime scene evidence from the homicide of a teenage girl were scattered before them. Occasionally an overwhelmed juror stood up and walked toward the window for fresh air, looking down at the empty lawn below. It was May 1998, and the town’s first capital murder trial in almost fifty years had just begun.Days in the courtroom turned into weeks. By the end of May, the twelve were no longer strangers, and cardboard covered the windows, from which law enforcement officers instructed them to stay away. Muffled shouts and passionate chants reverberated from the lawn. Protesters surrounded the perimeter of the courthouse, news vans lined the curb, and TV reporters…

Willie Nelson with Susie, Lana, and Billy. For as long as Lana Nelson can remember, “Red Headed Stranger” was one of her favorite songs. When she was a little girl in the late fifties, and her dad a radio DJ, she’d call the stations where he worked to request its original 1954 recording by Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith and his Cracker-Jacks—provided, that is, it happened to be a period in which the family could afford a phone. Then, when her dad got home each night, she’d beg him to play her to sleep with it on his guitar. And then, of course, some twenty years later, it became a song the whole world wanted to hear Willie Nelson to sing, when he grew it into a concept album that changed American music…

Celebrity Bracket: Brittney GrinerEverything is bigger in Texas and that certainly includes Brittney Griner. She towers over nearly everyone, at six feet nine inches, and her wingspan is more than seven feet long. Her father, who only clocks in at six two, once remarked that she has to be careful to dodge ceiling fans. “Some girls when they’re tall, they have a real hard time dealing with their height and their confidence level,” Griner said during her senior year at Houston’s Nimitz High School. “When I started getting tall, I just wanted to keep growing.”She’s used her height, as well as her athleticism and growing basketball savvy, to become one of the greatest players ever. She’s an NCAA champion from her time at Baylor University, a WNBA champion, a…
