Orange Holloway Sr. ProfileIn 2019, the Texas House of Representatives included Orange Holloway Sr. in Resolution 706. It was written to honor Norma Frances “Tootsie” Tomanetz of Snow’s BBQ in Lexington, who had just been inducted into the American Royal Association’s Barbecue Hall of Fame. The text reads, “she was tutored by legendary pit master Orange Holloway.” A legend, certainly, for having taught one of the most famous pitmasters Texas has ever celebrated, but Orange was more of a mystery, having died decades ago. His mentions were always as a footnote to Tomanetz’s story, which is why Orange’s distant cousin Seth Dockery III recently organized a family reunion to share a fuller picture of Owens “Orange” Lee Holloway Sr.We met in June in Giddings, 55 miles east of Austin,…

There’s a story my folks used to tell when they wanted to get across what it was like to be older parents, in their fifties and sixties, with a young boy in the house. A boy, they understood, who was bored and restless with no siblings still living at home, who spent most of his days alone. A boy who seemed to live inside his own head and often lost track of time and of where he was and wished he were growing up anywhere other than Brownsville, isolated at the southern tip of the state, alongside the border and not far from the sea.Years later, my parents and I would kid one another about what happened that day when we all went to the…

Mary Claire Haver at her home in Galveston.Dr. Mary Claire Haver was finishing her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, in Galveston, when she overheard some professors whispering about a new study that appeared to link hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with an increased risk of adverse outcomes, including breast cancer. She remembers that day in 2002 vividly. Almost overnight, most doctors stopped prescribing HRT, blocking millions of women from access to one of the few medical treatments for menopause. “I had no idea that this memorable and momentous occasion would, years later, give me a new passion and purpose in my career,” Haver writes in her recent best-seller, The New Menopause. From her home in Galveston and her menopause clinic in nearby Friendswood, the ob-gyn, who turns 56…

menopause tips dr mary haverDr. Mary Claire Haver, the noted Galveston ob-gyn who’s become a leading national voice for women’s health, wants everyone to know this about menopause: the change is inevitable, but suffering is not.Haver, who turns 56 in August, became a social media star, first on Facebook and then with her off-the-cuff videos on TikTok and Instagram, where she’s found an audience of millions of women hungry for information about menopause—the life stage when menstrual cycles end. Even though it affects every woman, it’s woefully underresearched—accounting for just about 1 percent of what the National Institutes of Health spends on women’s research—and not well understood by the medical field as a whole. (A recent study found that only about 31 percent of OB-GYN residencies featured a formal…

Working Life is a monthly column in which Texans talk about their jobs. Natalynn Masters, who is 27, leads Camp Founder Girls, a weeklong summer retreat devoted to making nature activities more inclusive.I’m from Arizona. My dad is a wildlife biologist, and we spent a lot of our family time camping, fishing, doing all sorts of things on boats. So I’ve always had a deep love and appreciation for nature and the outdoors. I moved to San Antonio in 2019 and met our executive director, Alex Bailey, who told me about the camp. I was like, “Oh, that’s perfect.”We got our start on the East Side of San Antonio. In 1924 a trailblazer named Mattie Landry became aware of a group of Black girls who were…

Texas Tequila BrandsAlthough tequila can only be made in the five Mexican states (Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas) that are home to the blue agave plant, many enterprising Texans have launched their own tequila brands, embracing the Lone Star State’s appetite for agave while farming and distilling in Mexico. For expert opinions, we asked Texas bartenders and bar and restaurant owners to share their favorite brands.  Aerodrome Agave TequilanaCorpus Christi’s Aerodrome Distilling specializes in high-end, small-batch spirits, such génépi, amaro, and Tokaji-finished bourbon. Its Tequilana comes in the three main expressions (blanco, reposado, and añejo), all aged, bottled, and labeled in-house.“[Aerodrome Tequilana blanco] is pure unaltered agave distillate. That means it’s at full strength, without additives, which really shines when using it for classic tequila cocktails,” says…

Tequila Package: Tex-Mex PairingsWhile a frozen margarita with salt on the rim and a combination plate is perhaps the most vaunted pairing in the Tex-Mexosphere, there are so many other ways for tequila to complement your favorite dish.Tequila is a major part of Mexican culture—not only does it have a strict denomination of origin, but there is also an oversight organization accredited by the Mexican government, the Tequila Regulatory Council, that must certify a tequila before exportation. And the spirit has many applications beyond being mixed with lime: it can be subbed for whiskey in an old-fashioned, or made savory with avocado, cilantro, and peppers. No matter what you make with tequila, pick a good one and your meal will be instantly elevated. Alba Huerta, owner of James Beard…

Mango Margarita RecipeMango margaritas were a summertime staple at Teala’s in Houston, a Mexican restaurant with a Thai twist. When Texas Monthly originally published a version of this recipe, in the August 1994 issue, Patricia Sharpe reported that Bangkok-born owner Teal Anomaiprasert got the idea while on a culinary reconnaissance trip to the Yucatán. Anomaiprasert discovered there that Mexican and Thai cooking had more than a little in common: “Both countries use lots of fresh lime, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and hot, hot peppers,” he said. And, of course, mangoes. You can no longer enjoy generously portioned mango margaritas on the Teala’s patio (the restaurant closed in 2015) but you can enjoy this slightly modified version of its nineties-era recipe at home. Three types of fresh juice, plus orange…
