This Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, skip the expected and give Mom an experience she will never forget at Scarborough Renaissance Festival, where Mom reigns supreme for the day.

Set in a 16th-century English village just south of Dallas in Waxahachie, Scarborough Renaissance Festival turns Mother’s Day into a full-day escape filled with live entertainment, artisan shopping and indulgent fare. In this storybook setting, Mom can enjoy a little royal treatment while the kids take on their roles as loyal subjects and Dad steps in as the knight in shining armor, making the day feel both magical and easy to plan.

To make the day even more memorable, the Festival is hosting a “Royal Treatment for Mom” contest. Families can nominate their favorite mom for a chance to win a prize package that includes four tickets, drinks, a food voucher and a special gift from the artisan marketplace. Entries are open now at https://www.srfestival.com/rtw-mom/ and close at 11:59 p.m. on April 30, 2026.

Also on Mother’s Day, children 12 and under are admitted free with each paid adult admission, giving families another reason to spend the day together.

Beyond the festivities, Scarborough’s renowned artisan marketplace offers the perfect opportunity to let Mom choose a gift as unique as she is. With more than 200 shoppes throughout the village, guests can discover handcrafted treasures ranging from elegant glassblown art and hand-thrown pottery to Renaissance-inspired crowns, tiaras and circlets fit for a queen. Delicate floral garlands, bespoke jewelry crafted from sterling silver and gemstones and finely made accessories including parasols, fans and ornate hairpieces offer thoughtful ways to commemorate the day.

Throughout the village, artisans bring their craft to life with live demonstrations, from glass sculpting and silversmithing to candle carving, calligraphy and pottery, creating an immersive and interactive shopping experience. Families can also capture the moment with a professional photo in period costume, giving Mom a timeless keepsake from her day in the kingdom.

Moms can also enjoy a touch of indulgence throughout the day with on-site experiences for purchase including relaxing massages, whimsical hair braiding, henna body art and fresh floral offerings, adding to the feeling of being pampered like royalty.

Special Mother’s Day activities include a mead tasting experience at the Castle Pavilion from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where the first 100 moms will receive two complimentary mead samples and enjoy exclusive offers. Families can also take part in a children’s craft station where little ones create heartfelt cards and letters for Mom, adding a personal and memorable touch to the day.

When it comes to dining, Scarborough offers a feast worthy of a queen. Whether Mom prefers a leisurely, sit-down meal or grazing her way through the village, there is something to suit every royal taste. Guests can relax inside the Rose & Crown Inn and enjoy classic European fare such as shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash and savory meat pies, or wander the lanes enjoying festival favorites from dozens of kitchens. From Scotch eggs and artisan breads to pastries, charcuterie-style bites and globally inspired dishes, the options are as varied as they are indulgent. Sweet finishes like fresh-baked pastries, fruit-forward desserts and warm cobblers add the perfect touch to a day dedicated to celebrating her.

As part of Flights of Fantasy Weekend, guests will encounter whimsical entertainment and interactive moments throughout the village, including a fantasy costume contest, a Fairy Initiation Ceremony for children and playful, immersive experiences around every corner.

From start to finish, Scarborough Renaissance Festival offers a Mother’s Day celebration that blends romance, family fun and unforgettable moments. It is more than a gift. It is a full day dedicated to making Mom feel like the queen she truly is.

A new docuseries produced by a North Texas researcher and Texas Woman’s University alumna is helping bring long-overdue visibility to perimenopause—an experience that affects every woman, yet historically receives limited attention in research, education and public conversation.

Texas Woman’s will host a series of free public screenings of BALANCE: A Perimenopause Journey across its campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston this spring, each followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A featuring experts in women’s health. View the BALANCE trailer.

Monks don’t typically come to mind when talking about menopause. But in BALANCE, filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhutimillennial Jain monks based in North Texas—set out to better understand their own experiences with perimenopause, thus launching a journey that uncovers a broader story about the origins of menopause misinformation, gaps in women’s midlife care, and the need for more open, informed conversations.

Produced by researcher, advocate and TWU alumna Stephanie Collins, the four-part docuseries blends personal storytelling with expert insight, exploring symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and fatigue, while examining the historical and cultural factors that have shaped how menopause is understood and treated. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and has drawn national attention and support from high-profile health care experts and Alyssa Milano, who serves as an executive producer.

A highlight of each TWU event will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A moderated by Collins, which will offer an intriguing opportunity for a post-viewing conversation and extended dialogue about women’s health.  Joining the conversation will be Dr. Sarah Berg, a nationally-noted obstetrician-gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner who specializes in midlife women’s health and advances menopause education through  speaking, writing and digital learning initiatives, including Selfority, a menopause information platform.

“Menopause is something every woman will experience, yet for centuries it’s been pushed into the shadows,” Collins said. “I’m proud to be part of the growing dialogue bringing this issue into the light and the effort to help women better understand their options. As a TWU alumna, it’s especially meaningful to bring BALANCE to my own university—an institution committed to the idea that when you educate a woman, you empower the world. That belief is at the heart of this project, which is about giving women the knowledge they need to take control of their menopause journey.”

Jaime Porter, TWU’s interim vice president for university advancement, said the screenings reflect TWU’s commitment to advancing conversations that impact health care, as well as the university’s continued investment in women’s health research.

Texas Woman’s is currently exploring a proposal to expand its Institute for Women’s Health, with a focus on advancing research related to perimenopause and midlife health. The planning effort, led by a team that included Collins and supported by a grant from the Texas Women’s Foundation, would further position TWU as a leader in addressing critical gaps in women’s health.

“We’re excited that Texas Woman’s is taking part in this growing conversation, and delighted by the opportunity to celebrate the work of one of our alumnae,” Porter said. “Almost 90 percent of our students are women and nearly half of our students pursue careers in health care, so this is an issue that directly connects to our mission. These events offer a valuable opportunity for our community to engage with the topic and participate in thoughtful panel discussions with experts in the field.”

Breakthrough T1D Gala Dr. Perrin White (honoree), Holly Swartwout, Jeff Swartwout, Harper Swartwout (Fund a Cure Family), Amy Camp (Breakthrough T1D Territory Executive Director)

The Breakthrough T1D Dallas community gathered on Saturday, April 11, at the OMNI Dallas Hotel to celebrate a milestone evening at the 30th Anniversary Gala, “A Night of Hope,” presented by The Dave and Stacey Johnson Family. The inspiring event brought together more than 600 families, researchers, and supporters united in the mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to treat, prevent, and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Throughout the evening, 33 Breakthrough T1D’s Youth Ambassadors children living with type 1 diabetes and their siblings – greeted guests and energized the room as they helped drive donations. Their enthusiasm not only supported the night’s fundraising success, but also served as a reminder of the lives directly impacted by every dollar raised.

The evening opened with heartfelt remarks from emcees Karen Borta of CBS 11 and Isaiah Stanback, former Dallas Cowboys player and NFL Network Good Morning Football and CBS 11 sports analyst, both of whom shared their personal connections to T1D as parents. Guests paused for a special tribute honoring the late Josh Pack, a dedicated champion of the organization whose legacy continues to inspire generosity and impact.

This year’s gala chairs – the Johnson family (Stacey and Dave Johnson and their family Chelsea and Blake McMullen, Kendall and Michael Kelly, and Rylie Johnson) – helped lead a meaningful celebration that highlighted both the 30-year history of the Dallas Gala and a deeply personal milestone: daughter Chelsea’s 30th “diaversary,” marking three decades of living with T1D.

“Type 1 diabetes affects not only those of us who live with the disease, but also the families who walk beside us each day,” said Chelsea McMullen. “While technology has transformed how I manage T1D, I still dream of a day without it – a future where my children don’t have to face this disease.”

David Natinsky, president-elect of the Breakthrough T1D Greater Dallas Board introduced Amy Camp, territory executive director, and Melissa Pinkerton, Dallas chapter director, who recognized key supporters and their hope to keep the momentum going and one day see a world without type 1.

“Thirty-one million dollars has been raised in 30 years to fund research, clinical trials, and education,” said Camp. “And families like the Johnsons have been right alongside us every step of the way – driving progress, raising millions, and giving hope to so many.”

The program also honored Dr. Perrin White, a nationally recognized leader in pediatric endocrinology whose decades of work have helped transform care for children living with T1D.

“Thanks to the efforts of Breakthrough T1D, I not only hope for a cure – I know it will come,” said Dr. White. “At UT Southwestern, we care for 2,500 children living with T1D, and we’re seeing real progress. I’m proud to be part of advancements like teplizumab, the first disease-modifying therapy shown to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes in those at risk. While we work toward a cure, we celebrate each breakthrough that improves lives today and gives families hope for the future.”

A highlight of the evening was the Fund A Cure presentation, featuring the Swartwout family and their daughter Harper, who participated in an early clinical trial for the groundbreaking teplizumab therapy.

“At such a young age, Harper represents the impact each of us can have in the fight to find a cure,” shared her family, emphasizing the importance of screening and clinical trials in advancing research.

“Teplizumab therapy is the most meaningful discovery since the 1922 discovery of insulin!” exclaimed Harper Swartwout. Her final message captured the spirit of the night: “Let’s make type 1, type none.”

The evening featured a lively auction, generous sponsorship support, and heartfelt moments that underscored the urgency and promise of continued research, with its success driven in part by auction chair Lindsey Verity, whose leadership helped create an engaging and impactful fundraising experience.

Lexie Peterson, community relations & corporate giving coordinator at American Airlines, also known in the diabetes community as “The Divabetic” – a prominent T1D advocate, content creator, and influencer – kicked off the live auction experience, with the airline contributing more than 1 million AAdvantage® miles to enhance packages and drive fundraising momentum. She encouraged the crowd to “let good take flight!”

As the program concluded and guests took to the dance floor to the music of Manhattan, the message of the evening remained clear: with continued commitment and generosity, a future without type 1 diabetes is within reach.

In addition to the Johnson family, major sponsors included Source North America, Cantina La Rosa, JF Petroleum, Stature Aviation, Forbes HOUSE Dallas, Southwest Airlines, and FBD Partnerships LP.

On April 9, a charming Patron Party for the 45th Annual Equest Blue Ribbon Gala was held in the beautiful home of Connie and Marc Sigel, setting the scene for a lively and stylish start to gala season. The event brought together 75 Equest supporters for a meaningful evening filled with connection, excitement, and purpose.

Equest’s beloved Mini Ambassadors, Ranger and Dare — two miniature horses standing under 38 inches tall — greeted guests and quickly became a favorite photo opportunity. Inside, attendees enjoyed passed appetizers by Wendy Krispin Catering in an inviting atmosphere where conversation and camaraderie flowed easily, underscoring the shared commitment to Equest’s mission.

A special artistic touch came from Veva Sterling, daughter of Mimi Crum Sterling, who created watercolor portraits for guests, offering a personal keepsake that captured the spirit of the evening.

Equest CEO Eric Lindh and Gala Co-Chairs Melinda and Mark Knowles took a moment to recognize the committee chairs for their unwavering dedication before thanking guests for their continued support and for being part of the Equest family. They emphasized how meaningful this community is in advancing the organization’s mission, noting that the upcoming Blue Ribbon Gala is not only a celebration, but a vital moment that brings the community together in support of Equest’s life-changing work.

A particularly heartfelt moment came from Equest parent Allison Smith, who shared her daughter Lilly’s journey with autism. She described Equest as “essential” to their family, crediting the nonprofit with giving Lilly “confidence, connection, and a chance to dream,” a powerful reminder of the impact made possible through the support in the room.

Among those in attendance were Honorary Chair Lynn McBee, Founders Award Honorees Leslie and Hawkins Golden, and event designer Steve Kemble. Equest Board officers, including Chairman Brooke Bailey, Vice Chairman Megan Martin, and Treasurer Daniel Valentine, alongside numerous board members, were seen mingling with guests. Rounding out the room were a number of longtime patrons, including Lisa Laughlin, Natalie Taylor and Lauryn Gayle White.

All of it now leads to the Equest 45th Annual Blue Ribbon Gala, the organization’s signature fundraising event, set for April 25 at Gilley’s Dallas, an evening sure to continue the momentum and celebrate the community that makes Equest’s mission possible.
