The Highland Park 2014 Football Team hosting 1st Annual Caniac® Football Supper and Silent Auction September 12

The Highland Park Scots Football 1st Annual Caniac® Football Supper and Silent Auction has been a long time coming.  For years, other organizations have had fundraising dinners in the Highland Park High School cafeteria starting with the Highland Belles, then the cheerleaders and Scotsmen, the basketball team, and several other groups but the football team has always relied on the annual car wash and a small auction that has been done in homes and other venues such as the Frontiers of Flight museum the last couple of years and the ad sales.  Last year several of the senior moms were talking about the fundraising at the weekly prayer meeting after the pep rally and one of the moms said, “Why don’t we do a dinner in the cafeteria?”  Why not indeed?

For the first time ever, the football team will host a dinner in the Highland Park High School cafeteria on Friday night September 12 before the home game against Prosper.  They will serve Cane’s finger chicken, slaw, French fries and a dessert.  Bess Brooks, who is heading up the effort, says, “I hope everyone will come eat supper with us and bid on a few auction items before the football game”.  It will save the team much needed funds not having to rent and decorate a facility and the catering will be covered by the ticket sales.  More importantly, it will just be fun.

The football program is a wide reaching program, with approximately 350 boys playing on all four teams—freshman and sophomores traditionally play on Thursday night and a junior varsity team plays on Thursday night and the varsity usually Friday night.  A large percentage of the high school boys play at least one of their high school years.  Chap Bernet paid ode to the character built on the field off of Westchester with his songs, “Hot Summer Days “  and “Don’t Just Get By”.  The funds raised by the auction and from the dinner this year will fund new equipment, spirit items, radio time and filming.

Football benefits more than the young players.  Friday nights in University Park looks like every small town in Texas where fans of all ages fill the stadium to enjoy watching the game and reminisce or dream of their day on the field-- playing or marching, or twirling or dancing.   The Scots shop sells players jerseys and cheerleading and Belle uniforms in all sizes and fans come out decked in blue and gold and carrying cow bells or clackers, and buttons and hats.  Season tickets are highly coveted and sometimes passed down from generation to generation.

The team slogan this year, coined by Coach Randy Allen and the four captains, Brooks Burgin, Andrew Frost, Mitchell Kaufman and Clayton Woods and Coach Randy Allen sums it up best, The Texas Tradition.  It is a Texas tradition for the community to come together under the Friday night lights.  The 2014-2015 football team hopes to continue the tradition of winning and build on the tradition of community with the 1st Annual Caniac® Football Supper on September 12 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. in the Highland Park High School cafeteria.  Dinner is available via drive thru the teacher parking lot 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Both dine and take out tickets are $10 and available from any Highland Park Scots football player.
