A little over a week since the University Park City Council decided to limit the size of the Park Cities YMCA's proposed expansion plans, Y officials are still analyzing the situation to determine how to move forward.

Gregg Pappas, the executive director of the Park Cities Y, said "at this time, we are working with our board and staff to analyze the City Council's decision. That is where we are at right now."

Carlos Munguia, chair of the Park Cities YMCA's board of management, said in a letter, which was sent to the local YMCA community after the UP Council announced its decision to limit the size of the facility, that the Park Cities Y's staff has worked to "grow" the facility in a way that not only serves the community but also addresses concerns of the surrounding neighborhoods.

"We remain hopeful that a revised plan can be developed that can ultimately provide a great YMCA for this community," Munguia said in the letter.

The UP Council unanimously decided at its meeting on Sept. 4 to limit the Park Cities Y's proposed expansion plans to 52,000 square feet, a 20-percent reduction from the 65,000-square-foot maximum size that the Y originally requested.

“To ask the neighborhood to absorb a commercial facility more than double the size of the existing is harmful,” said Bob Clark, UP’s mayor pro tempore, during the Council's Sept. 4 meeting. “The common ground that best serves University Park, our Y and its neighbors is a new facility, 20-percent smaller than what is proposed, with underground parking.”

After the Park Cities Y filed its original expansion request in February, some local residents voiced that they opposed the proposed expansion because potential problems, such as an increase in traffic, could occur in the surrounding neighborhood.
