A new emergency center has opened in Dallas, which is providing quick care to its patients, so they will not have to wait for possibly hours to be treated at a crowded hospital emergency room.

The Highland Park Emergency Center, which is the first freestanding emergency department in Dallas, officially opened last week near the corner of Lemmon Avenue and Wheeler Street.

“Our goal is to provide a high quality service through highly trained emergency room doctors and nurses,” said Bob Phelan, a doctor who is one of the Center’s partners. “We expect patients to be seen by a doctor within minutes of their arrival.”

The 9,000-square-foot, $2 million facility is fully equipped with an X-ray machine, CT scanner, ultrasound, laboratory and more. Having the equipment on hand, the HP Emergency Center gets most test results back to patients within minutes instead of hours or days.

The HP Emergency Center provides medical services and treatments of emergent problems to both children and adults. Patients can stop by the center for a wide range of medical situations, including complex fractures, brain abnormalities and heart and lung disorders.

“We can treat any kind of emergency, ranging from a finger injury to a heart attack,” said Sunil Mahbubani, who is a doctor at the Center.

If a person needs to be hospitalized, the HP Emergency Center will transfer the patient to a nearby hospital and strive to have him or her admitted directly upon arrival, "bypassing the busy hospital based ER." The HP Emergency Center will also contact specialists and arrange treatment if an emergency procedure, such as an appendectomy, is needed.

At the HP Emergency Center, there will always be at least one board certified Emergency Medicine physician on hand to treat patients. Also, nurses and lab technicians will be ready at the location to run tests all of the time.

Right now, the center is accepting all private and commercial insurance, but it is not accepting government-sponsored insurance, such as Medicare, Medicaid, CHIPs or Tricare. Travel insurance is accepted for patients who live outside of the United States. Cash payments are accepted as well.

The HP Emergency Center is located at 5150 Lemmon Avenue, Suite 108. More information can be found at www.HighlandParkER.com.
