During its meeting on Tuesday, the University Park City Council voted to approve a funding request to repair the bridge in Curtis Park, which will cost a total of $54,650.

Built in the 1930s, the bridge has been worn down over the years and needs carpentry and masonry repairs to fix some structural problems, including it holds water on the walkway, has old railings and some of the stonework is dilapidated.

The UP City Council and Capital Projects Review Committee approved a $50,000 budget for repair work on the bridge in 2009, but recent bids estimate the project will cost $54,650, so the Council was asked to approve the additional $4,650, according to the meeting's agenda. The city's staff found savings in the Parks Department's FY2012 Capital Improvements Program for the additional expenditures, and the Council voted unanimously to approve the funding request for the renovations.

The repairs on the bridge are meant to make the park a safer and more aesthetically pleasing place.
