Dr. Charlotte Hodges

Dallas’ Dr. Charlotte Hodges is one of three bariatric surgeons featured in TLC’s new series “Botched Bariatrics.” The show tells the stories of patients who have suffered profoundly since their original bariatric surgeries were performed, and how new teams of bariatric and plastic surgeons take on the arduous and difficult task of correcting the prior surgical mistakes so that patients can have their lives back.  

“Patients turn to bariatric surgery to help them lose weight and regain control of their lives, and unfortunately, sometimes these surgeries, when poorly performed, create even more problems,” said Dr. Hodges. “I’m honored to be featured on this new show with other doctors who are working to correct some of the worst cases and enable patients to begin living the transformed lives they envisioned when first undergoing bariatric surgery.”

About Dr. Hodges

Dr. Charlotte Hodges is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. She is an Advanced Laparoscopic General and Bariatric Surgeon who has practiced in DFW since 2011. She has performed over 3000 general and bariatric procedures. Dr. Hodges received her medical degree from Texas A&M University Health Science Center and completed her general surgery residency at Baylor University Medical Center. She is a Fellow and member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as well as a member of the Obesity Medicine Association, Texas Medical Association and Dallas County Medical Society.  She is the Chair of the Surgery Department at White Rock Medical Center and the center’s Bariatric Director.

Dr. Hodges offers her patients both medical and surgical weight loss options, and performs all weight loss procedures, including laparoscopic revision bariatric surgery.

Dr. Hodges made Dallas her home in 2006 when she began her surgical residency. She met her husband during her fourth year of residency, and they had their daughter, Margie, in 2015.  She enjoys playing Mah Jong and revels in being a cheer mom.

Vanessa Wyche will present this year's Keynote Address

Frontiers of Flight Museum, Texas’ premier air and space museum, is celebrating the impact of women in aerospace in a powerful luncheon event at the museum on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Titled “Women Take Flight: Fashion to Fission,” the luncheon, presented by JSX, will feature keynote speaker Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, home to America’s astronaut corps, Mission Control Center, International Space Station, and the Orion and Gateway programs.  Wyche served as flight manager for several missions of the retired Space Shuttle Program and will speak about the importance of women in aviation and aerospace.

Also on the agenda for the luncheon: a panel discussion featuring four dynamic women in the aviation and aerospace industry. Speakers include Leanne Caret, retired president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space and Security; Dyan Medina Gibbens, pilot, SpaceWERX, and U.S. Space Force adviser; Caeley Looney, CEO and founder of Reinvented Inc. and flight director at Firefly Aerospace; and Amy Spowart, CEO of the National Aeronautic Association.

“These leaders will be given a robust platform to engage in conversation around their journeys to success – what they faced to get there, and what message we should be sending to all leaders in the aerospace field,” said Frontiers of Flight Museum CEO Abigail Erickson-Torres. “We need to promote young women to go for it – from fashion to fission. Let’s change the conversations at home, in the classroom, on the playground and in the media, so that growing up, they will automatically feel like they belong.”

Additionally, the luncheon provides the opportunity for Frontiers of Flight to honor a range of supporters with awards presented at the event. 2024 honorees include:

On Saturday, April 27, Operation Kindness brought together its esteemed Kitten Nursery staff and dedicated volunteers for an enriching training session aimed at equipping individuals with the skills needed to care for bottle-fed kittens.

Led by Kitten Nursery Manager Angela Cariotis and her expert team, the day consisted of two informative training sessions attended by over 40 enthusiastic volunteers in total. The sessions began with a thorough discussion on the fundamentals of nurturing underaged kittens, covering crucial topics such as feeding frequency, bathroom assistance, temperature regulation, weight monitoring and early signs of illness to be vigilant about.

Following these presentations, attendees had the opportunity to engage with the nursery team, asking questions and seeking clarification on various aspects of kitten care. The nursery team then took center stage, demonstrating how to bottle-feed some of the kittens they were caring for in the nursery.

With precision and care, the nursery staff showcased the process of encouraging kittens to latch onto the bottle, demonstrating the correct angle and technique for holding the bottle and ensuring the kittens’ comfort and safety during feeding time.

Volunteers were then invited to step forward and try their hand at bottle-feeding. Under the watchful guidance of the nursery nurses, participants took turns practicing how to feed and handle the kittens. It was a moment of connection and learning, as volunteers immersed themselves in the experience.

The Operation Kindness’ Foster staff provided a thorough selection of essential equipment for the fosters to take home with them, including kitten-sized litter boxes, toys, blankets and mixing bottles.

Foster Coordinator Katie Keiler said the team plans to host more training sessions in the future, with dates to come as planning continues. The Storehouse 2024 Volunteer of the Year Kathy Jascott

Jascott, who has volunteered since 2009, was the guest of honor at the Storehouse’s 2024 volunteer appreciation event at Riders Field, where she threw out the first pitch before a Frisco RoughRiders game 

The Storehouse of Collin County has named longtime volunteer Kathy Jascott as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year for her dedicated service since 2009. Jascott, who has been a volunteer for The Storehouse since it first opened Joseph’s Coat Clothing Closet, has logged more than 1,069 volunteer hours*, sorting and organizing donated clothing and helping people find the clothing they need for themselves and their families – all at no cost. On April 28, Jascott was the guest of honor at The Storehouse’s 2024 Volunteer Appreciation Celebration at Riders Field, where she was invited to throw out the first pitch at the Frisco RoughRiders game.

“Volunteering with The Storehouse has given me a new purpose after retirement,” said Kathy Jascott. “The Storehouse team is like a second family to me, and it is an honor to be recognized as volunteer of the year. I tell others that volunteering at Joseph’s Coat makes you aware of the needs of other people, and you can make an impact on their lives beyond providing them with clothing. We often refer neighbors to other programs of The Storehouse for additional help, and if The Storehouse cannot provide what they need, they will refer them to others who can.”

The Storehouse’s four integrated programs – the Seven Loaves Food Pantry, Joseph’s Coat Clothing Closet, Project Hope Neighbor Care, and The Academy Education Program – work hand in hand to provide pathways toward transformation for the neighbors. As neighbors’ needs are identified in various programs, team members provide additional direction and assistance to help serve them holistically.

“Working closely with our neighbors leads to trust and a relationship with them, and they often open up to us about what is happening in their lives,” added Jascott. “One time we received a letter from a neighbor who had come to Joseph’s Coat in need of a coat, and we couldn’t find her size at first. She said in her letter that to most people she was invisible until she met us, and that really hit me. There are so many in need due to a variety of reasons, and we truly don’t realize that.”

Jascott expressed her amazement at the tremendous growth The Storehouse has seen since she first began volunteering. In the beginning, neighbors came to Joseph’s Coat and waited in a line to shop for clothing. In 2023, The Storehouse began serving neighbors by appointment three days a week. Today Joseph’s Coat distributes more than 7,500 articles of clothing to approximately 300 households per month. Neighbors may schedule appointments to shop for clothing once every two months.

“It has not only been exciting to see the changes within Joseph’s Coat, but also the addition of new programs at The Storehouse and how they all work together to best serve the neighbors,” added Jascott. “Years ago, I would have never imagined The Storehouse would have The Academy Education Program, which has led to job partnerships and employment for neighbors! Working together, we are building more community and helping our neighbors move toward long-term transformation.”

Today Jascott volunteers two to three times a week for about two to three hours at a time. She focuses much of her time on donated children’s clothing – one of the biggest needs in the clothing closet. The staff also refers to her as the children’s PJ queen because she is the best at locating and matching the pajama tops and bottoms, which she then pins together.

Originally from New Jersey, Jascott has lived in Texas for over 30 years. She and her husband Ron live in Plano and have a blended family with six children and 11 grandchildren, all of whom reside in Texas. She first learned about The Storehouse as a member of St. Andrew Methodist Church.

“When The Storehouse first began, I was just about ready to retire,” she said. “I worked in elementary education with children with special needs. “Volunteering at Joseph’s Coat is just what I do now, and I love it!”

Jascott shared that there are many incredible stories of serving neighbors in Joseph’s Coat.

“I can tell you that we witness miracles on a regular basis,” added Jascott. “Once a neighbor desperately needed some shoes in an unusual size. We couldn’t find anything, and then I saw in another area, a new pair in his size. And when we had that terrible ice storm a few years ago, a man came in who had no warm clothing. I happened to walk into another room and find a bag of sweatpants and other warm clothing – all in his size.  Once a woman came in who had many children. Her older daughter was getting married, and she had nothing to wear for her wedding. We just happened upon a mother-of-the-bride dress hanging on a rack and found matching shoes – all in her size. These types of miraculous and emotional stories happen over and over again!”

Jascott enjoys sharing with others how important it is to volunteer. “I know that volunteering is a commitment, but once you do it, it changes your life. And through working in Joseph’s Coat, as an added benefit, you will also soon have the most organized closet at home because you are so used to sorting!”

“I don’t know how we could begin to thank Kathy Jascott for her many years of service in Joseph’s Coat Clothing Closet at The Storehouse,” said Candace Winslow, CEO, The Storehouse. “She has been with us from the beginning, and she understands the impact that our integrated programs can have on our neighbors. She is a delight and a blessing to everyone she meets, and we are beyond grateful for her steadfast dedication to serving others. Minutes count when someone is having a stroke, and many strokes are preventable.

Those are key takeaways for National Stroke Awareness Month, according to Jyutika Mehta, PhD,  director of the Texas Woman’s University Stroke Center-Dallas, located at the T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences in the Southwestern Medical District.

“Stroke can happen to anyone, but it’s not always inevitable,” Mehta said. “There are steps you can take to reduce your risk.”

One important step is to talk to your doctor about your risk for stroke, Mehta noted. “Family history and lifestyle are factors in stroke risk,” she said. “If you’re at higher risk, your doctor can help you identify the factors you can control or influence — such as physical activity, smoking, weight, diabetes and high blood pressure management, and stress management — and offer advice, resources or interventions to help you significantly reduce your risk.”

Mehta also stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when stroke is suspected.

“Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the U.S., which means that everyone should familiarize themselves with the symptoms of stroke,” she said. “When a stroke happens, getting help quickly can greatly increase a person’s chances of recovering from a stroke. In some cases, a quick response can literally save someone’s life.”

Established in 1992, the Stroke Center-Dallas is a specialized facility providing internationally-recognized research and state-of-the-art outpatient rehabilitation of stroke and traumatic brain injury, as well as hands-on training for TWU graduate students.

Patients who qualify for the program receive intensive, customized treatment plans designed to improve speech, language, cognition and motor outcomes, at no cost to the patient. The Stroke Center also provides treatment options for oral and pharyngeal dysphagia (swallowing and feeding dysfunction).

“Stroke is a dangerous and deadly disease, but there is hope for stroke survivors,” Mehta said. “Research happening at Stroke Center-Dallas and at facilities around the world are leading to continually improving, advanced rehabilitation treatment protocols and technology that are helping healthcare providers help their patients achieve positive, sometimes life-changing outcomes.”

STROKE AWARENESS:

Symptoms of stroke include numbness, confusion, trouble walking or seeing, dizziness, and severe headache. Since these symptoms can be caused by many conditions, use the FAST test to help you react quickly:

F (Face): Is any part of the face drooping? Can the person having symptoms smile? Does the smile appear uneven?

A (Arms): Can the person lift their arms? Does one arm drift downward?

S (Speech): Is the person’s speech slurred or nonsensical?

T (Time): Remember that time is critical. If stroke is suspected, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Hilltop Holdings partnered with GreenSpace Dallas to celebrate Earth Day. Approximately 70 employees from Hilltop and its companies including PlainsCapital Bank, HilltopSecurities and PrimeLending dedicated two days to restoring and revitalizing sections of Bachman Lake and Frasier Dam Recreation area.

Volunteers tackled various tasks, including collecting and removing trash from the area and trail maintenance projects.

The collaboration between Hilltop Holdings and GreenSpace Dallas will help ensure that both Bachman Lake and Frasier Dam Recreation area remain vibrant and accessible destinations in the heart of the city for generations to come.
