Catch Up & Read, a Dallas-based nonprofit whose mission is to equip children from underserved communities to read on grade level by the end of third grade, will be Galleria Dallas’ Gallery Wall partner for the month of July.

The nonprofit’s exhibit, “Growing Confident Readers and Teachers Across North Texas,” will be displayed on Galleria Dallas’ Gallery Wall on Level 1 next to Apple from July 1-29.

Catch Up & Read empowers teachers with evidence-based literacy practices that give first- through third-graders the reading foundation they need to succeed in school and life. During this school year, the program, now in its 15th year, has worked with 20 schools, 126 teachers and 860 students. 94% of students in the program grew in reading skills, significantly outpacing their peers, and 95% of teachers report seeing a significant positive impact on their teaching.

The Gallery Wall offers viewers important information about the science of reading, including the five pillars of reading, why third-grade reading is so important, and summer reading tips for parents to help beat the summer slide that can happen between school years.

Along with the Gallery Wall, Catch Up & Read will offer Read Alouds with special speakers Tuesday mornings at 10:30 throughout July. Galleria Dallas will also offer readings on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. throughout July with children’s authors including Jenn Hill, Rachel Más-Davidson and Brad Davidson, Nancy Churnin, Ha Dinh and Orion Jean reading from their books. Readings will take place on Level 3 near the Children’s Play Place.

“At Catch Up & Read, we believe in the power of literacy to transform lives and communities,” said Carol Goglia, president and CEO of the nonprofit. “The Gallery Wall at Galleria Dallas will help Catch Up & Read engage the community and raise awareness of the critical importance of learning to read by third grade.”

“Over the years, Catch Up & Read has trained more than 500 teachers who have impacted more than 50,000 students with high-quality reading instruction,” said Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing Megan Townsend. “We’re proud to feature the nonprofit on our Gallery Wall in July and encourage shoppers to bring their children or grandchildren in to take advantage of the book readings happening on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the month.”

Ready to get your roof replaced? Understanding the roof replacement process can help you prepare and ensure a smooth experience.

Replacing a roof is a significant home improvement project that can enhance the value, appearance, and functionality of your home. Whether you're dealing with an old, worn-out roof or addressing damage from a recent storm, understanding the roof replacement process can help you prepare and ensure a smooth experience. In this article, we'll walk you through what to expect during a roof replacement, from initial planning to the final inspection.

Initial Planning and Preparation

1. Assessing Your Roof's Condition

Before embarking on a roof replacement, it's essential to assess the current condition of your roof. Look for signs of damage, such as missing shingles, leaks, or visible wear and tear. If you're unsure about the extent of the damage, consider hiring a professional roofing contractor to conduct a thorough inspection. This assessment will help you determine whether a full replacement is necessary or if repairs can suffice.

2. Choosing the Right Roofing Material

One of the most critical decisions you'll make during the roof replacement process is selecting the right roofing material. There are various options available, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Common roofing materials include:

  • Asphalt Shingles: Affordable, easy to install, and available in a variety of colors and styles.

  • Metal Roofing: Durable, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance, but typically more expensive.

  • Wood Shingles/Shakes: Aesthetic appeal and natural insulation, but require more maintenance.

  • Tile Roofing: Long-lasting and fire-resistant, but heavy and may require additional structural support.

  • Slate Roofing: Extremely durable and elegant, but also one of the most expensive options.

Consider factors such as your budget, climate, and architectural style when making your decision.

3. Hiring a Professional Roofing Contractor

Selecting a reputable roofing contractor is crucial to the success of your roof replacement project. Look for contractors with positive reviews, proper licensing, and insurance coverage. Obtain multiple quotes and ask for references to ensure you're making an informed choice. A professional contractor will provide a detailed estimate, timeline, and contract outlining the scope of work.

The Roof Replacement Process

1. Preparing Your Home

Before the roofing crew arrives, take steps to prepare your home for the replacement process. Clear your driveway and surrounding areas to provide easy access for the workers and their equipment. Remove any valuable or fragile items from your attic, as debris may fall during the project. Additionally, inform your neighbors about the upcoming work to minimize any inconvenience.

2. Removing the Old Roof

The first step in the actual replacement process is removing the old roofing materials. The crew will carefully strip away the existing shingles, underlayment, and any damaged decking. This phase can be noisy and messy, but it's essential to ensure a clean slate for the new roof.

3. Inspecting and Repairing the Decking

Once the old roof is removed, the roofing contractor will inspect the underlying decking for any signs of damage or rot. If any issues are found, they will be repaired or replaced to provide a solid foundation for the new roof. This step is crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of your new roof.

4. Installing the Underlayment

With the decking in good condition, the next step is to install the underlayment. This protective layer acts as a barrier against moisture and helps prevent leaks. The underlayment is typically made of felt or synthetic materials and is installed over the entire roof surface.

5. Installing the New Roofing Material

Now comes the exciting part—installing the new roofing material. The crew will carefully lay down the shingles, metal panels, tiles, or other chosen materials according to the manufacturer's guidelines and industry best practices. Proper installation is critical to ensure the roof's durability and weather resistance.

6. Adding Flashing and Ventilation

Flashing and ventilation are essential components of a well-functioning roof. Flashing is installed around chimneys, vents, and other roof penetrations to prevent water infiltration. Proper ventilation helps regulate temperature and moisture levels in the attic, extending the life of your roof and improving energy efficiency.

7. Final Inspection and Cleanup

Once the new roof is installed, the roofing contractor will conduct a final inspection to ensure everything is in place and meets quality standards. They will check for any missed spots, loose shingles, or other potential issues. After the inspection, the crew will clean up the job site, removing any debris and ensuring your property is left in good condition.

Post-Installation Considerations

1. Warranty and Maintenance

Most roofing materials come with a manufacturer's warranty, and reputable contractors often provide a workmanship warranty as well. Be sure to understand the terms and conditions of these warranties and keep all documentation for future reference. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning gutters and inspecting for damage, will help prolong the life of your new roof.

2. Insurance and Documentation

Notify your homeowner's insurance company about the roof replacement and provide any necessary documentation. This can help ensure your policy remains up-to-date and that you're adequately covered in case of future damage.

3. Enjoying Your New Roof

With the roof replacement complete, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a secure and aesthetically pleasing roof. Whether you're planning to stay in your home for years to come or considering selling, a new roof is a valuable investment that enhances your property's curb appeal and overall value.

A roof replacement is a significant undertaking, but with proper planning and the right contractor, it can be a smooth and rewarding process. By understanding what to expect during each phase, you can prepare yourself and your home for the project, ensuring a successful outcome. Remember to choose the right materials, hire a reputable contractor, and stay informed throughout the process. With a new roof in place, you'll enjoy improved protection, energy efficiency, and peace of mind for years to come.

Getting ready to stage your house for sale? The goal is to make your home appealing to a wide range of potential buyers and create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere that allows them to envision themselves living in the space.

When it comes to selling your home, first impressions matter. Properly staging and presenting your property can make a significant difference in attracting potential buyers. Here are some tips to help you prepare your home for sale:

  1. Declutter and Depersonalize: Remove personal items and excess clutter to make your home appear more spacious and allow potential buyers to envision themselves living there. Consider storing away family photos and personal memorabilia to create a neutral space that appeals to a wide range of buyers. Organize closets and storage areas to showcase the ample storage space your home offers.

  2. Deep Clean: Ensure your home is spotless by cleaning every nook and cranny. Consider hiring professionals for a thorough cleaning if needed. Pay special attention to high-traffic areas such as the kitchen and bathrooms, ensuring they sparkle and shine. Don't forget to clean windows, blinds, and light fixtures to let natural light illuminate every corner of your home.

  3. Make Repairs: Fix any visible issues such as leaky faucets, chipped paint, or squeaky doors. A well-maintained home gives buyers confidence in its overall condition. Address minor repairs such as loose doorknobs, dripping faucets, and cracked tiles to present a home that is move-in ready. Consider investing in professional inspections to identify and fix any hidden issues.

  4. Enhance Curb Appeal: The exterior of your home is the first thing buyers will see. Make a good impression by maintaining a well-manicured lawn, adding some potted plants, and ensuring the entrance is inviting. Power wash the exterior of your home to remove dirt and grime, giving it a fresh and well-maintained look. Consider adding outdoor lighting to highlight architectural features and create a welcoming ambiance.

  5. Neutralize Colors: Repaint walls in neutral tones to appeal to a wider range of buyers. Neutral colors create a blank canvas for buyers to imagine their own style. Consider repainting bold or outdated colors with soft neutrals like beige or light gray to create a calming and versatile backdrop. Use accent colors in decor items like throw pillows or artwork to add pops of color.

  6. Let in Natural Light: Open curtains and blinds to let natural light brighten up your space. Well-lit rooms feel more welcoming and spacious. Clean windows inside and out to maximize natural light and views. Consider adding mirrors strategically to reflect light and make rooms appear larger and brighter.

  7. Arrange Furniture: Create a layout that highlights the flow of your home. Rearrange furniture to maximize space and create a comfortable atmosphere. Group furniture in conversational arrangements to create cozy gathering spaces. Ensure there is a clear path for easy navigation through each room.

  8. Add Finishing Touches: Consider adding fresh flowers, decorative pillows, or a cozy throw to enhance the overall look and feel of your home. Place fresh flowers in key areas like the entryway or dining table to add a touch of elegance and freshness. Layer throw blankets and pillows on sofas and beds to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

  9. Highlight Key Features: Showcase unique selling points of your home such as a fireplace, hardwood floors, or a spacious backyard. Draw attention to these features during showings. Create focal points in each room to draw the eye and highlight architectural features. Use lighting to showcase key elements like a statement fireplace or a beautiful view.

  10. Create a Welcoming Entrance: The entrance sets the tone for the rest of the home. Make sure it is clean, well-lit, and inviting to make a positive first impression on potential buyers. Add a fresh doormat and potted plants to create a welcoming entryway. Consider painting the front door a bold color to make a statement and enhance curb appeal.

By following these tips and presenting your property in the best possible light, you can increase your chances of selling your home quickly and at a desirable price. Remember, the goal is to make your home appealing to a wide range of potential buyers and create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere that allows them to envision themselves living in the space.
