Louis Beecherl Jr., a Park Cities resident and former chairman of the The University of Texas System Board of Regents, died Tuesday at the age of 85.

Beecherl's legacy includes being the CEO of Texas Oil & Gas Co. and serving as a chairman of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. Also, he was an avid supporter of North Texas hospitals and medical institutions.

“Louis played a key role in my decision to come to UT Dallas as president, and his support of UT Dallas, through his generosity and valued counsel, has been critical as we have advanced in name and stature,” said UT Dallas President David E. Daniel. “Today, many Texans mourn his passing, but we have the comfort of knowing that Louis’ passionate support of higher education in this state left a great legacy that will benefit many generations to come.”

Beecherl was born Feb. 10 1926, and he graduated with bachelor of science degrees from Tulane University and the University of Texas. He is survived by his wife, eight children, 35 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be hosted for Beecherl at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Incarnation, which is located at 3966 McKinney Ave. in Dallas.
