chasing the tide documentary series stillJust a few miles into a daunting attempt to hike the full length of the Texas coastline, Chrissy and Jay Kleberg are ruffled. It dawns on the couple that when they hatched their plan to hike all 370 miles of the state’s barrier islands, they had no idea what they were in for. As the afternoon sun beats down, Jay swats away bugs swarming his face. The couple had expected to make good time marching over flat sands, but, peering into a camera he’s holding out before him, Jay explains that since leaving the Louisiana border, where they were dropped off, they’ve been trudging slowly through a salt marsh along a ridgeline composed of crushed shells. “Not much to speak of in terms of sandy…

kreuz market exterior photoAt the age of seventeen, Cal Polk joined lawman Pat Garrett’s posse, which was hot on the trail of Billy the Kid in the winter of 1880. He told the tale in a manuscript held at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, in Canyon. “Pat, why don’t you come up like a man and give us a fair fight,” he remembered Billy the Kid calling out while holed up in a stone shack in Stinking Springs, New Mexico, before his eventual surrender and arrest. Polk returned to working with cattle on the LX Ranch, in the Texas Panhandle, after the search, and he eventually returned to Prairie Lea, in his native Caldwell County, to serve as constable and deputy sheriff. In 1897, Polk opened a meat market…

Leon Bridges Album Is a Love Letter to TexasLeon Bridges has never had a hit song. That’s not to say he’s not successful, or that there isn’t an audience for his brand of soulful pop. His debut album was certified platinum, while its follow-up went gold. He was nominated for four Grammys between 2016 and 2019, winning one (Best Traditional R&B Performance, for his “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand”). Texas Sun and Texas Moon, his two widely adored collaborative EPs with Houston’s Khruangbin, have been dorm-room staples since they were released in 2020 and 2022, respectively. One of the most sought-after voices in music, Bridges has been tapped for collaborations by everyone from Bun B and Gunna to Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves.Still, he’s just not the kind of artist who gets a whole…

Dustin Rhodes profileProfessional wrestling has often been a family business. In Texas, the sport’s history is synonymous with clans like the Funks, the Von Erichs, and the Guerreros. But few surnames in wrestling history come with a legacy as Texas-sized as Rhodes. To fans across the globe, Austin native Dusty Rhodes was the American Dream, the blue-collar son of a plumber with the slickest tongue in the state, if not the entire wrestling world. Behind the scenes, he wielded tremendous influence as a booker and promoter, responsible for planning the narrative and competitive arcs other wrestlers would perform throughout their careers. In that role, Rhodes was regarded for his creativity, constantly scheming up new stipulations to spice up matches and new ways to tell stories in the…

alexandria ocasio-cortez and bernie sanders rally photoThe Kamala Harris campaign hasn’t spent money campaigning in Texas this election season. It hasn’t spent much time here, either. Outside of a quick rally in San Antonio with second gentleman Doug Emhoff in late September before a fundraiser, there’ve been no further public campaign events. The reason for her absence is obvious: History suggests that she hasn’t got much chance of winning here. The last Democrat to claim Texas’s electoral votes was Jimmy Carter, nearly fifty years ago. The idea of a blue—or at least purple—Texas has tantalized national Democrats for at least a decade, but the real measure of how competitive they see the state is in where they’re spending their time and money. Progressive politicians appear to see it a little differently. This week,…

How to Party (And Dress) Like It's ACL 2004The year is 2004. Myspace has more than one million users, and “Yeah!,” by Usher, is blasting on repeat on the radio. The Frost Bank Tower was just completed, making it the tallest building in Austin. You might not have a cellphone, and if you do, it takes the blurriest pictures you’ve ever seen. Life is good—so good, in fact, that you might even throw a tank top on over your bathing suit and head down to Zilker Park to catch Sheryl Crow at the third-ever Austin City Limits Music Festival. Don’t forget your chunky sunglasses! It’s hard to believe that in the olden days of yore, festival outfits were rarely a priority for concert attendees. (With the number of “festival fashion” press releases we journalists…

Mums FashionFall means football in the state of Texas. But in other circles, far from the gridiron, cooler temperatures also indicate a changing of the fashion guard. With a new season come new trends, and lately, the two disparate autumnal interests are intersecting in the most kitsch of accessories: the homecoming mum. In July, Brooklyn-based fashion forecaster Mandy Lee posted a video to TikTok and Instagram Reels predicting that prize ribbons, also called cockades, would be a niche trend this fall. Texans viewing the video immediately clocked what Lee, a native New Englander, could not. “If you’re from Texas it’s just a homecoming mum IYKYK,” wrote TikTok user @lhxmax52. “It’s giving homecoming mums,” said @lupezzet. “Thinking about how it’s time to find my homecoming mum,” agreed @sestrera.mp4. …

Texas Prairie DogsBy sunrise on an August morning, the landscaping crew at the Marathon Grasslands Preserve in Brewster County is hard at work. Plump, sandy brown bodies scamper across the gently sloping ground at this 2,700-acre preserve about ten miles northeast of Marathon, pausing where a piece of too-tall grass needs to be chewed down. Dirt flies as a digger cleans out a burrow, her black-tipped tail bouncing as she works. It’s a social bunch that touch noses as they pass one another and keep up a steady chatter of birdlike chirps. Meanwhile, a sentry keeps watch for predators from her perch on top of a mound. She stands alert, her stumpy little T. Rex arms resting on her white belly, and scans the landscape. This industrious bunch…

ACL Walkup: If You're Excited About These Headliners, Arrive Early to See These Texas ArtistsThe organizers of the Austin City Limits Festival work hard to balance the ticket with headliners, not-quite headliners, and a big smattering of up-and-comers to fill out the program and make sure fans have almost ten full hours of music each day. While the big names who close out each night are incredibly famous, the odds are that even the most voracious music lover hasn’t heard of every act booked at noon on Saturday. Most of those artists are local Austin- or Texas-based musicians who are at the very start of their careers; many of them don’t even have a full album out yet. But sifting through the dozens of unfamiliar names is a lot of work for even the most dedicated fan, especially because…
