In early 2023, Texas Monthly published the fiftieth-anniversary issue of the print magazine. In the months that followed, we celebrated our birthday at events all over the state—from the San Antonio Book Festival in the spring to the Texas Book Festival in the fall, with pit stops at Hot Luck festival, Texas Tribune Festival, and the Texas Country Reporter Festival. At each event, we set up a red phone booth and collected voicemail responses to the question “What do you love about Texas?” To wrap up our anniversary year, we turned our favorite submissions into an animation.
