The aviation industry is growing, and Galleria Dallas is partnering with Texas Woman’s University to bring attention to education and career opportunities in the aviation industry. It is estimated that over the next 20 years, the aviation industry will need to hire and train approximately three million recruits to fulfill the needs of the industry.

Texas Woman’s University is breaking barriers with its new educational exhibit on Galleria Dallas’ Gallery Wall on Level 1 next to Apple from Aug. 2-31.

The new Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences at Texas Woman's University aims to increase the number of women in commercial piloting and aviation management, thus strengthening the talent pipeline of aviation professionals and addressing the consistent underrepresentation of women in aviation fields. In 2023, TWU announced a $15 million grant from the Doswell Foundation to support the new aeronautical sciences program. The gift, the university’s largest from a foundation, will support faculty, equipment and scholarships.

Flight training is costly. However, TWU is consistently one of the most affordable four-year universities in Texas, and the Doswell school intends to offer one of the most affordable flight programs in the region. Students in the Bachelor of Sciences in Aviation Science program are eligible for all traditional forms of financial aid and scholarships as in any other collegiate program.

"Every day, TWU students and graduates break barriers around the globe, harnessing their potential, purpose and perseverance to realize their dreams and contribute to their communities,” said J. Clinton Grant, TWU director of Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences. “We believe the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences will offer TWU students the opportunity to do the same in the world of aviation.”

On Saturday, Aug. 24, Galleria Dallas will celebrate TWU Day from 1-3 p.m. Grant will join students and faculty at the exhibit. They’ll not only share information about the program, but they’ll also have fun aviation swag and hands-on kids’ activities. TWU’s student athletes will also be on hand to greet guests and read to children on Level 3.

“Galleria Dallas has long been a passionate supporter for educational causes in North Texas,” said Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing Megan Townsend. “It is an exciting time to celebrate the Doswell School of Aviation and the career possibilities this exceptional STEM program will provide to our community.”

Interested in PRP treatments? Here is a guide to what PRP treatments are and how they can help when it comes to your health!

Understanding Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Its Versatile Applications

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential to accelerate healing and rejuvenate tissues. But what exactly is PRP, and how can it be used in various medical and cosmetic fields? Let’s delve into the fundamentals of PRP and explores its diverse applications.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a concentration of platelets derived from the patient's own blood. Platelets are a type of blood cell that plays a crucial role in healing and tissue regeneration. PRP is created by drawing a small amount of blood from the patient, which is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other blood components. The resulting plasma, rich in platelets, is then injected back into the patient's body at the site of injury or concern.

How Does PRP Work?

PRP works by harnessing the body's natural healing processes. Platelets contain growth factors and proteins that stimulate cell repair and regeneration. When injected into damaged tissues, PRP releases these growth factors, promoting faster healing and reducing inflammation. This makes PRP a valuable treatment option for a variety of conditions.

Applications of PRP Treatment

1. Orthopedic Injuries

PRP is widely used in orthopedics to treat various musculoskeletal injuries. It can be effective in healing tendon injuries, ligament sprains, and muscle strains. PRP injections are commonly used to treat conditions such as:

  • Tennis Elbow: PRP can help reduce pain and inflammation in the tendons of the elbow.

  • Knee Osteoarthritis: PRP injections can alleviate pain and improve joint function in patients with osteoarthritis.

  • Rotator Cuff Tears: PRP can promote healing in partial tears of the rotator cuff.

2. Hair Restoration

PRP has shown promising results in the field of hair restoration. It is used to treat androgenic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) and other forms of hair loss. PRP injections into the scalp can stimulate hair follicles, leading to increased hair growth and thickness.

3. Aesthetic Medicine

In aesthetic medicine, PRP is often referred to as the "vampire facial." It is used to rejuvenate the skin by promoting collagen production and improving skin texture. PRP can be used to address:

  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: PRP can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a more youthful look.

  • Acne Scars: PRP can help improve the appearance of acne scars by promoting skin regeneration.

  • Skin Texture and Tone: PRP can enhance overall skin texture and tone, making it smoother and more radiant.

4. Sports Medicine

Athletes often turn to PRP treatment to accelerate recovery from sports-related injuries. PRP can be used to treat:

  • Achilles Tendonitis: PRP can reduce inflammation and promote healing in the Achilles tendon.

  • Hamstring Injuries: PRP can speed up the recovery process for hamstring strains and tears.

  • Ligament Injuries: PRP can aid in the healing of ligament injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears.

In conclusion, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment is a versatile and promising therapy with applications in various medical and cosmetic fields. By leveraging the body's natural healing mechanisms, PRP can accelerate recovery, reduce inflammation, and rejuvenate tissues. Whether you're dealing with an orthopedic injury, hair loss, or seeking aesthetic improvements, PRP treatment may offer an effective solution. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if PRP is the right option for your specific needs.

Texas Woman’s University has named Monica G. Williams, PhD, a seasoned higher education leader with a strong background in partnerships and fundraising, as the inaugural Houston campus president. She begins her role on Aug. 26.

Williams served nine years as foundation president and vice president of advancement at the University of North Texas at Dallas and has also held leadership positions in fundraising at the United States Fund for UNICEF, Houston Works USA, Rice University, Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University.

She played a key role in helping increase UNT Dallas’ enrollment by 60% during her service at that institution and was a lead architect for the university’s values-based strategic plan.

Additionally, Williams taught English in the Houston Independent School District, served as the inaugural director of Houston’s Sylvan at Work/Sylvan Learning Systems Office and worked at Neighborhood Centers Inc. leading its community-based programming.

Williams has an extraordinary record of achievement in leading philanthropic efforts, securing grants and stewarding gifts, and maintains close relationships with Houston stakeholders that she formed in the business, industry, nonprofit and civic sectors.

“Dr. Williams is a born leader, with strong connections in Houston, and a deep understanding of the Houston culture and workforce needs, which on their own would make her an exceptional choice as our first president for the Houston campus,” Texas Woman’s Chancellor Carine Feyten said. “But it is her experience that sets her in high esteem with our campus for what we need right now, especially her experience of working with limited resources to build and grow within the constraints of our state-funded higher education ecosystem.”

As president, Williams will provide strategic leadership for the campus, located in the Texas Medical Center, which encompasses more than 60 medical institutions. It is the largest medical center and life science destination in the world. She will work with students, faculty, staff and key stakeholders — including alumni, community members, business and industry leaders, legislators and policymakers — to ensure Texas Woman’s is a key contributor to the higher education landscape in Houston.

“Texas Woman’s has a distinct role in producing outstanding professionals in health care and business for the Houston region, and I am honored to serve as the inaugural president of the Houston campus,” Williams said. “I look forward to working with the university community and building on a legacy of excellence by producing more talented professionals who will make our community and the state of Texas stronger.”

The state Legislature established Texas Woman’s University System in 2021 as its seventh university system, enabling its Houston and Dallas campuses to transform, grow and continue serving the state and its communities as the nation’s only system with a woman-focused mission. The system made it a top priority to install leadership at both campuses. Monica Christopher became the Dallas campus’s first president in February of this year.

In addition to her lengthy record of fundraising and establishing partnerships, Williams served as an adjunct faculty member at UNT Dallas and at Texas Southern. Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism/English and a master’s degree in communications at Texas Southern and a PhD in educational leadership at Prairie View A&M.

The annual fest is timed to coincide with the opening of the legendary Munich festival.

Goddess of the Flowers: One Girl’s Journey

by

Stefanie Auerbach Stolinsky

The shocking, eye-opening story of a young girl’s desperate run from a powerful Mexican cartel leader.

Gorgeous Xochitl (pronounced “so-she”) Gonzalez is a fifteen-year-old street waif in rural Mexico who is seized with her mother by cartel leader Carlos Morales to be his “queen” at his massive hacienda.

Life becomes a dream of wealth, gold, expensive cars, bag loads of cash, and jewelry. And all she has to do is “train” new girls to the tricks of the trade. How to please the men they will be sold to across the Rio Grande and into the U.S. Not realizing these girls will also be sneaking drugs and other contraband into the States, Xochitl entices them into the life of fantasy that a gang girl can have riches in America.

During a trafficking exchange, Xochitl witnesses the brutal murder of a 13-year-old; she realizes the same thing will happen to her. She escapes with two girls, a stash of coke, and a gun.

She tells Carlos she is pregnant with his child and thus starts one of the most astounding chases in storytelling. Aided by the U.S. Government, incarcerated in a detention hall, and bailed out by a brothel madam, she agrees to trade her son for the release of girls primed for slavery, emerging triumphant.

Goddess of the Flowers by Stefanie Auerbach Stolinsky is a riveting tale of one girl’s harrowing escape from the hands of a vicious drug lord, drug smuggling, human trafficking, international corruption, and the unbelievable amounts of money involved. Her story is shocking and eye-opening, not only in its life-threatening brutality and non-stop danger but for the sheer reach of the cartel’s power and influence. However, even the cartel is no match for her resilience, determination, and inextinguishable hope for a better life for herself and her unborn child.

Xochitl (meaning “Goddess of the Flowers”) is just days shy of her sixteenth birthday when cartel leader Carlos Morales, who keeps her as his sexual plaything, coldly murders a thirteen-year-old girl who is in their mansion headquarters to be trained to perform sexually for her buyer across the border in the U.S. She’s known all along that she’s just a cog in the horrific sex human smuggling machine and her usefulness to Carlos, too, would soon reach its expiration date as she aged. But Xochitl had connected with the younger girl when she’d arrived that day, and her ruthless execution galvanized Xochitl into action to get herself and two more of the new girls out of the cartel compound and to safety across the river.

Xochitl had been aware that Carlos had a network of connections in the U.S., but it wasn’t until she made her desperate run for freedom that she realized just how far and wide his reach really extended. He has eyes and ears everywhere she turns, and she constantly feels she’s still easily within his grasp and that he is just toying with her before snatching her back up. Xochitl quickly finds out she can trust no one and with good reason. Even the ‘good’ guys have agendas where she is just a pawn and an expendable one at that. There’s no respite for this poor girl: no real moments free from fear or pain. Still, she perseveres.

The story unfolds from Xochitl’s point of view, and the author gives her a voice, attitudes, and emotions that feel starkly authentic. The narrative is, at times, stream-of-consciousness, and the language and actions are raw, desperate, and uncensored. Characters are brutalized, and many die. The picture that is painted is shocking and grim, yet throughout it all, Xochitl continually taps into inner sources of strength, replenished by hope. The style of narrative may not be to everyone’s taste; the events are often too brutal for comfortable reading. However, I was mesmerized by her story and rooted for Xochitl to find freedom and justice, compelled to see the story through to its resolution.

I recommend GODDESS OF THE FLOWERS to readers of gritty and dark crime thrillers.
