On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the community gathered at Riders Field in Frisco for the largest fundraising event of the year for NAMI North Texas, NAMIWalks 2024. This year’s theme, “I AM NAMIWALKS,” perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the event, which raised over $125,000 with 800 people attending in person and more than 1,200 total registrants.

The day was filled with fun and uplifting activities, including a resource fair, free Kona Ice for kids, a “Why I Walk” story station, and various activities for children. The pet-friendly event also welcomed lots of wagging tails, adding to the atmosphere. Walkers who raised $100 or more were rewarded with a NAMIWalks North Texas event t-shirt and other recognition gifts.

This event was made possible by the generous support of several sponsors, including Denny’s, Texas Health Behavioral Health, Julie and Pierce Noble, Pillar Clinical Research, Carrollton Springs/Well Bridge Health Care/Collin Springs, Medical City Green Oaks Hospital/Medical City Behavioral Health McKinney, Medical City Mental Health & Wellness Center/Frisco, Teva, West Coast University, Connections Wellness Group, Neurocrine Biosciences, and NBC 5 / Telemundo 39. NAMI North Texas was honored to have Brittney Johnson, the Emmy Award-winning co-anchor of NBC 5 News at 10 p.m., serve as the honorary chair for this year’s NAMIWalks North Texas.

“This year’s NAMIWalks North Texas was truly a remarkable event,” said Kasey Smith, Interim Executive Director of NAMI North Texas. “We are incredibly grateful to our supporters, sponsors, staff, and volunteers who made this day possible. Your dedication and enthusiasm help us raise awareness, stop the stigma surrounding mental health, and celebrate the journey of mental health recovery. Together, we are building a community of hope and resilience.”

NAMIWalks North Texas not only raises vital funds but also celebrates mental health recovery, honors those who have lost their lives to mental health conditions, and raises awareness to stop the stigma surrounding mental health.

Founded in 1982, NAMI North Texas, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit organization, advocates for equitable access to mental health services, treatment, supports and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raise awareness and build a community of hope for all of those in need. Kyra Sauter displays some of her completed washcloths.

Prosper, TX — Kyra Sauter, a 2024 graduate of Walnut Grove High School in Prosper, has crocheted about thirty washcloths to benefit community needs by partnering with Streetside Showers, a nonprofit organization that provides mobile hot showers to homeless people in North Texas.

“When I started, I was really just looking to learn a new skill,” said Sauter. “My mom taught me, and we started with cotton-thread squares, which allow for a lot of practice just stitching.”

Those beginner-level squares also make convenient washcloths. As Sauter’s collection of squares grew, she learned of the ongoing needs of Streetside Showers to provide towels, washcloths, cleansers and other hygiene items to their weekly guests. These individuals come to the truck at scheduled destinations for a hot shower that is difficult for them to get anywhere else.

Sauter said that she usually spent about an hour on each washcloth, often stitching during breaks at school. “I especially liked the idea of being able to grow my talents to benefit others,” said Sauter.

Service is important to Sauter. “It gives us an opportunity to understand and care for others, and that helps our community become more unified and accepting in general,” she said.

Sauter has words of wisdom for other teens looking to make a difference in their communities: “Service doesn’t have to be something big,” she emphasized. “I’ve made the mistake of being intimidated by the idea of service because I think it has to be some huge, life-changing project, but really it can be any small thing that makes someone’s day a little better.”

Sauter concludes, “Use your talents, get creative, and remember that every good thing counts.”

Ongoing needs for Streetside Showers can be found on their website and at JustServe.org.

The deadline is fast approaching for Texas-based women artists – from emerging to established – to submit their works for the sixth-annual Vignette Art Fair, which will take place Oct. 17-19, 2024, at Dallas Market Hall (2200 N Stemmons Fwy, Dallas, TX 75207). The three-day juried event features works exclusively by Texas women artists in an effort to promote exceptional yet under-represented regional talent. Vivian Li, the Lupe Murchison Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, will serve as curator for the 2024 Vignette Art Fair (see bio below). The fair is free and open to the public Oct. 18-19; however, tickets are required for the VIP Benefit Preview Oct. 17.

The call-for-entries deadline is Aug. 2, and selected artists will be notified by Aug. 26. Submission fee is $36. For qualifications/rules, details and instructions, go to texasvignette.org.

The Vignette Art Fair is unique in that it is fully submission-based, curated in an exhibition-style setting, solely spotlights the work of women artists, and, most significantly, 100% of all sales go directly to the artists.

“Texas Vignette received a record number of artist entries last year, and we look forward to another great response this year with Vivian Li at the helm,” said Jessica Ingle, Texas Vignette founder and president. “Vivian has deep connections to the Texas art scene through her curatorial appointments with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Dallas Museum of Art and has long supported our mission to uplift dynamic female artists in a male dominated art world. We are thrilled to have her expertise for this year’s fair.”

Founded in 2017, Texas Vignette works to close the gender disparity gap as female artists are not represented nearly as often in museum exhibitions, acquisitions and galleries compared to their male counterparts. In fact, of the $196.6 billion spent at art auctions between 2008 and 2019, work produced by women accounted for only $4 billion, or around 2% of total sales.

Participants must identify as a woman and be a current Texas resident. Submission requirements include an artist statement, bio, CV and a link to the artist’s website and/or Instagram handle.

Vignette Art Fair will be open with free admission Friday, Oct. 18, from noon-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. In addition, a limited number of tickets will be available for purchase to the VIP Benefit Preview on Oct. 17, from 6-10 p.m. The evening will feature live performance works, meet-and-greets with the artists and curator, music, and an open bar.

For more information, go to texasvignette.org.

At a time when schools are limiting the teaching of African American history and libraries are pulling books off shelves, the African American Museum, Dallas is launching a Freedom Schools series on Saturdays running July 27-Sept. 21, 2024. The Freedom Schools are part of a national effort by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) to counter the attempt by 22 state legislatures  (including Texas) to prevent the teaching of accurate African American history in the nation’s public schools.

Open to the public, classes are free for students and teachers. The general public can also register by making a donation to the Museum.

The weekly programs – which will provide the public with an opportunity to learn African American history from its roots to present day – will be held every Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at the museum (3536 Grand Ave. in Dallas’ historic Fair Park).

The curriculum will focus on the following topics: African history; African American historiography; the African American experience in slavery, colonial and antebellum America; the experience of African Americans in the Civil War and Reconstruction; Harlem Renaissance; Civil Rights Movement; African Americans and the arts; Black politics; local history; and the Nadir of American Race Relations.

The weekly sessions will be taught by two of the Museum’s distinguished staff members and a guest educator.  Dr. W. Marvin Dulaney, the museum’s deputy director and chief operations officer, is a former UT-Arlington history department chair and African American studies professor. He is also the national president of ASALH. Robert Edison, the museum’s curator of education, is a Dallas ISD teacher of the year and Fulbright Scholar. Anthony Guillory holds a Ph.D. in African American Studies from the University of Massachusetts and is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at UT-Arlington.

After the State Fair of Texas closes in October, the Freedom Schools will resume with a second series from Oct. 26-Dec. 28 at the African American Museum, Dallas.

For more information and to register, go to aam-dallas.org. Interested participants may also register in person by attending the first session this Saturday (July 27). For questions, contact Dr. Dulaney at dulaney@uta.edu.

Brenda Brown, Brenda Shute, Meeting and Luncheon Chairs; Karen Sargent, 2023-2024 President, Women’s Council

At Home in the Garden – A Floral Finale was the theme of the Annual Meeting of the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden which featured Carla Fonts, founder of Dunbar Road Design, as the headline speaker.

It was a gorgeous day as everyone came together at A Tasteful Place at the Dallas Arboretum.  Tables were draped with rich orange tablecloths topped with gold chargers, fuchsia linen napkins and striking centerpieces of Delft-style pottery filled with orchids and fresh fruit echoing the color palette.

Chaired by Brenda Shute and Brenda Cary Brown, 5th VP of Programs, the reception featured passed hors d’oeuvres and sparkling wines. Presentations began with Karen Sargent, 2023-2024 president, welcoming the crowd and bringing board members to the podium to give their reports. Allison Brodnax, chair of the Mad Hatter’s Luncheon, announced the sold-out event netted $314,496.66 and presented Karen with a huge ceremonial check.  Karen also presented Allison with a lovely thank you gift.

Linda Spina, 7th VP Donor Development and Dave Forehand, Vice-President of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, presented slideshow renderings depicting exciting new announcements of three significant projects. Linda said, “Through the fundraising efforts of the Women’s Council and donations by generous benefactors, we are excited to announce the construction of three gardens in A Woman’s Garden. These garden areas represent an additional investment of over $2 million by the Women’s Council and our donors.  Construction is about to begin, with garden completion of at least one project expected as early as later this year.”

Briefly, Linda said, “A re-envisioning for Pecan Parterre was completed by our landscape architect Warren Johnson and Dallas Arboretum VP Dave Forehand.   An exciting new feature in this garden is a walkway that extends from the upper level of the garden to the perimeter path at the lower level.”  Improvements include refurbishing existing hardscapes and new plantings.

The Burgess Serenity Garden plans were also revealed. “Pier and Glenn Burgess were captivated by an undeveloped area in our garden that was planned as a cloister or meditative space.  The area is one in a series of garden vignettes in A Woman’s Garden that provides views toward the lake,” Linda said.  Plans for that garden include new and existing plantings that will take advantage of the forest canopy, offer shade, green spaces and more year-round.

The Mother-Daughter Water Gardens Walkway is a new garden donated by Patty Dedman Nail and her family. Linda stated, “This garden will connect The Meadow, donated in honor of Patty’s mother Nancy Dedman, and The Woodlands and The Cliffside, donated by the Patricia Dedman Family Foundation.  It will serve as a living tribute to their very special mother-daughter relationship.”

Karen said that this year her theme of A Garden of Possibilities - Cultivating a Brighter Future has certainly come to fruition. Beginning with welcoming Sabina Carr, the new president and CEO of the Arboretum as the 600th member of the Women’s Council, she thanked membership chairs Mary Ellen Winborn and Claire Catrino for their efforts in growing the membership to over 625, as well as to Dorothea Meltzer, chair of the Lisianthus Society, for guiding patron membership to a record 341 members.

Heartfelt thanks also went to A Writer’s Garden 2023 chairs Mari Epperson and Sharon Ballew with honorary chairs Ann Barbier-Mueller and her daughter Niña Tollette and daughters-in-law Bridget Barbier-Mueller and Kaitlyn Barbier Mueller.

Karen thanked the chairs of the many special events offered by the Women’s Council, their volunteers and committees.  She said that overall, the combined fundraising efforts of the Women’s Council, with additional donations from donor naming, memorials and honorariums brought in total income of $606,941.

Special recognitions included the presentation of the Leadership Award to Karen Keith for her work these past two years as treasurer and the Service Award to Carolyn Tobin for her many years of guiding the Women’s Council in technology.

In closing Karen said, “From these experiences grow the treasured friendships our members value and cherish. I am grateful for your friendship, your generous support and the gifts of your time and talents.”

Carla Fonts, as the featured speaker, spoke about the history of the name of her company, Dunbar Road, and shared her fresh approach to design in some of her recent projects and the art of bringing nature inside the home through color, texture and design.

Luncheon was served and included a first course of sweet corn chowder, main course of a trio of hearty salads and for dessert, a delicious and imaginative white chocolate lemon shell shaped like a lemon and filled with lemon cheesecake.

Kitchen Design Concepts, a Dallas-based design and remodeling company located in the Design District, recently completed a kitchen remodel that features current design trends with a focus on functionality for the homeowner.

The client was looking for a refreshed, updated kitchen area to enhance her enjoyment of her older home without the need for a complete tear down. By removing two closets, enlarging the laundry room and changing the footprint of the space, Kitchen Design Concepts was able to give her exactly what she desired while maximizing every inch of the area to ensure functionality.

The kitchen design features sophisticated tuxedo style cabinets, with elegant white cabinets on top and white oak cabinets with a finish of straw stain below to add contrast, complemented by a set of floating shelves and honey bronze hardware to add a unique touch. The Casablanca Zellige tile backsplash brings a textured and sophisticated element to the kitchen. The laundry room features a patterned ceramic tile floor and beautiful green backsplash to add a pop of color to the newly refreshed space.

This thoughtful renovation also includes an updated bar area, where the original 1930s cedar wood was carefully preserved. The cedar wood has been painted over, maintaining its historic charm while providing a fresh and updated look to match the contemporary design. This blend of old and new elements creates a unique and inviting space for entertaining.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, now is the ideal time to start a kitchen remodel. Craft a space that perfectly balances functionality and style, ensuring you are all set to host unforgettable holiday parties and family gatherings, making the busy holiday season a breeze.
