IT CAME FROM TEXAS Film Festival announces new screenings and special guests joining the lineup for the second annual film festival dedicated to showcasing movies made primarily in Texas. IT CAME FROM TEXAS Film Festival will take place Sept. 13-15, 2024, at the downtown Plaza Theatre in Garland, TX, located at 521 W. State Street. As with last year’s inaugural edition of this fest, IT CAME FROM TEXAS Film Festival is sponsored by the City of Garland and Garland Cultural Arts.

In addition to securing the Western-adjacent classic films, TENDER MERCIES, GIANT and THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, festival director Kelly Kitchens has added titles to the ICFTX 2024 lineup, which add nuance and depth to the fest. One such title, the 2020 documentary HORTON FOOTE: THE ROAD TO HOME (screening as a double feature with TENDER MERCIES on Friday night), will celebrate its North Texas premiere at ICFTX 2024.

“When the idea of the Western genre blossomed into an Independent Texas Spirit theme, that broadened our horizons to a lot of possibilities in films we could showcase with our Oscar-winners: TENDER MERCIESGIANT and THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. It opened the doors to the rarely seen Spencer Williams’ all-Black film, THE BLOOD OF JESUS, from 1941, the first Texas film honored with being on the coveted Library of Congress’s National Registry List in 1991. And, yes, we’re also showing a couple of Classic Westerns with Gene Autry and Roy Rogers!” said Kitchens.

ICFTX 2024 welcomes Oscar-nominated Jeannine Oppewall, art director of TENDER MERCIES

Jeannine Oppewall, who served as art director on TENDER MERCIES, will do a little show-and-tell about her experiences working on the film. TENDER MERCIES was the first film that Ms. Oppewall designed.

Of her experience working on TENDER MERCIES, Ms. Oppewall states, “I remember the last morning of filming: I set out before dawn and, coming up over a rise in the bare black fields of Waxahachie, I saw a huge orange sunrise through the mist, behind a tall leafless tree. A strange feeling of intense calm and quiet happiness overcame me: I saw clearly that I was doing what I was meant to do. The setting was the perfect visual metaphor for the emotion.”

Ms. Oppewall has also received Academy Award nominations for her work on LA CONFIDENTIAL, PLEASANTVILLE, SEABISCUIT, and THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

When asked about her upcoming trip to Texas to help celebrate TENDER MERCIES, Ms. Oppewall said, “[I]n some sense, part of me grew up in Texas. And now I return: to see how I have changed, to see how the place has changed, and to see what emotions I will have to revisit.”

Noah McGough; MON CEO Jim Ramsey; MON Executive VP Melinda Russ; (front row-seated) MON Founder Louis Harrell Jr.

Noah McGough, a senior at Jesuit High School in Dallas, is one of the best high school kickers in the country. Rated number one in Texas with the most field goals last season at 17 and number six in the U.S.

His achievements include the Texas Sports Writers Association's 2023 Class 6A All-State First Team 6A Kicker and Player of the Year for All District 7-6A Special Teams.

While McGough is known in the sports community for his incredible talent, it’s his huge heart and willingness to serve others that stands out.

“At Jesuit, we live by the motto Be Men for Others,” says McGough. “As I go through this journey with so many amazing brothers, I am reminded of 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ‘Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.’ There is so much hate in the world right now. I’m called to be God’s light to the world.”

McGough is bringing awareness to Men of Nehemiah, a nine-month residential recovery program in South Dallas. During the football season, he is asking for the community’s support with pledges for every point he scores to benefit Men of Nehemiah at menofnehemiah.org/kick

“My Dad took me to a Men of Nehemiah service one Sunday morning,” explained McGough. “When you come here, you feel the love of God. These men have gone through horrible things. But to see God moving in people, it’s so powerful! This is loving your neighbor at its finest.”

Jesuit Dallas’ first exhibition football game will be Friday, August 23 against Flower Mound High School at Ranger Stadium in Dallas. The regular season ends November 8 at home against Irving Nimitz. McGough says he will continue to ‘kick for a cause’ throughout the playoffs if Jesuit advances.

“Noah is an amazing young man,” said Jim Ramsey, CEO of Men of Nehemiah. “We’re looking forward to watching him kick this season. But, more importantly, he’s reinforcing to each of these men that he cares about them. Many of these men are estranged from their families and friends. Some have been incarcerated. More than a few have lived on the streets. But some also come from gated communities and very nice neighborhoods. Addiction respects no zip code.”

Men of Nehemiah combines Biblical discipleship with professional counseling and military discipline and seeks to restore lives that have been derailed by drug and alcohol addiction. The objective is to help each man become the person God intended him to be and reunite him with his loved ones and community.

“I’ve been blessed with a gift to kick at Jesuit,” concluded McGough. “I want to use my gift for God. For a kick to count, it takes a great snap, a precise hold, and a team of blockers. We all need a team to succeed. I am thankful to be supporting the team at Men of Nehemiah.”

In 1994, Pastor Louis Harrell, a former US Army Colonel, founded Men of Nehemiah in New Orleans to deliver his wayward son, Louis Harrell, Jr., from the grip of addiction. Louis Jr. relocated to North Texas, where he launched Men of Nehemiah in South Dallas with the help of Roger McCasland, President and CEO of Operation Relief Center.

Today, Men of Nehemiah has helped more than 1,500 men find paths to recovery. Research compiled in 2022 affirmed that 61% of men who graduated from Men of Nehemiah prior to 2020 stayed sober for at least two years. More information is available at menofnehemiah.org.

As the demand for mental health services increases, nonprofit organizations seek real estate sites that are accessible to those in need. Solender/Hall, a full service real estate brokerage firm specializing in helping nonprofits, represented Dallas Metrocare Services in purchasing 9696 Skillman Street a 63,000-square-foot building located at the merger of Forest and Skillman. The multi-tenant office building is three stories high on almost three acres. The property owner, BBH Capital Investments LLC, was represented by Yasaman Hafezamini of BBH Capital Investments.

Located on a bus line, this site will provide mental health services, housing and homeless assistance and a pharmacy. The building will also be the location for The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic.

Dr. John W. Burruss, Metrocare CEO, said, “The demand for mental health services has surged, a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the largest behavioral health provider in Dallas County, Metrocare is dedicated to expanding access to quality care. Our recent property acquisition is a testament to this commitment, providing much-needed space to enhance and broaden our services and programs. Last year alone, we served over 51,000 individuals through almost 3,000 daily clinical encounters, delivering quality mental health care regardless of financial means. This expansion is a crucial step in meeting the unprecedented demand for mental health support in our community.”

Eliza Solender, president of Solender/Hall Inc., added, “Metrocare continues to lead Dallas County in providing mental health services, and this location will allow them to expand their services in the northeast portion of Dallas County. In fact, this site is almost adjacent to Metrocare’s very busy Skillman Family Mental Health Clinic at 9708 Skillman.”

University officials and commercial builders and architects marked a significant milestone in the construction of Texas Woman’s health sciences center, which will expand programming and research at TWU and increase health-related services for North Texans.

University leaders and representatives of AECOM Hunt construction and SmithGroup architects took part in a topping off ceremony, which celebrates placement of the final beam in a building project. Attendees signed their names to the beam, which in the coming weeks will be set into place.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of expanding health-related activities to better serve our students and the community, and we are excited about launching inter-professional collaborations that bring together multiple disciplines in innovative ways to improve the way we teach and learn,” said Angela Bauer, PhD, Texas Woman’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “The new health sciences center will be a beacon of health education for the academic community and a lifeline for rural North Texans who need greater access to health care.”

In September 2023, Texas Woman’s broke ground a $107 million, 136,000 square-foot health sciences center to serve as an inter-professional education facility linking students in the allied health fields with an emphasis on preparing them to serve in rural settings. The building will expand health-related programming, community outreach, research and other activities at Texas Woman’s.

The building will include labs, classrooms, collaborative workspaces, outdoor clinic sites and a teaching kitchen, as well as community health care clinics and student training spaces. The building project is scheduled for completion in summer 2025, with opening set for fall 2025.

“Through skill, dedication, and at times sheer grit, the health sciences center is making its way toward completion,” said Clint Binkley, AECOM’s vice president and Higher Education Sector Lead of the company’s South Region. “This is a milestone for this project, and we proudly look toward the impact the health science center will have ? creating opportunity and opening pathways to new careers, and growing access to health services in some of our most underserved rural communities in need of care. We are incredibly proud to be a part of the team that has helped make today’s topping out a reality, and I thank each and every one of the talented subcontractors, AECOM Hunt and SmithGroup workers, for their countless hours that brought us to this moment.”

Students and Parents Can Help Outstanding Teachers Get the Recognition They Deserve with the Teachers on the Rise Program

This school year students and parents can recognize outstanding teachers through the Teachers On The Rise program. This program recognizes educators who go above and beyond in their commitment to shaping the minds and futures of their students, particularly as they begin another year of learning and growth. As the new school year begins, Mrs Baird’s Bread and Market Street Supermarkets are excited to bring its Teachers On The Rise program to North Texas for its fourth year. Teachers On The Rise is a heartfelt initiative to honor the unsung heroes of our communities.

Teachers play a pivotal role in our society, often going unnoticed despite their tireless efforts and dedication. The Teachers on the Rise program seeks to change that by shining a spotlight on exceptional teachers who make a significant impact in their classrooms and communities. By acknowledging these educators, Mrs Baird’s and Market Street Supermarkets hope to inspire others to follow in their footsteps and elevate the standard of education across North Texas.

How the Program Works

The nomination process is straightforward and community-driven. Students and parents are encouraged to nominate deserving teachers, past or present, who have made a positive difference in their lives. Nominations can be submitted online at www.NorthTexasTOTR.com, where participants share stories and experiences that highlight the teacher’s extraordinary contributions. A tip—please be as detailed as possible!

Each month, judges review the nominations and select three outstanding teachers to be honored—one elementary, one middle school and one high school teacher. These teachers receive a special recognition package, which includes a $100 American Express gift card from Mrs Baird’s Bread, a $100 Market Street Supermarkets gift card, a certificate and a basket of goodies from Mrs Baird’s. There’s also a great incentive for students to nominate their teachers. All students who nominate a winning teacher receives a $50 American Express gift card!

The program is open to most all school districts in the North DFW Metroplex including: Allen, Coppell, Frisco, Lewisville, Lovejoy, McKinney, Plano, Prosper and Celina.

A Community Effort

The success of the Teachers on the Rise program relies heavily on community participation. By encouraging students and parents to nominate outstanding teachers, the program fosters a culture of appreciation and recognition within the community. This collaborative effort not only highlights the importance of teachers but also strengthens the bond between schools and their communities.

As the Teachers on the Rise program continues to grow, Mrs Baird’s and Market Street Supermarkets remain committed to celebrating the remarkable contributions of North Texas educators.

The nomination portal to the 2024-2025 school year is now open. Nominate your favorite teachers today at www.NorthTexasTOTR.com.
