This year, Goodwill Industries of Dallas, Inc. – the premier organization in North Texas helping individuals with barriers to employment – is hosting its 9th annual fundraiser, THE LUNCH, with Olympic and World Cup champion, Lindsey Vonn. THE LUNCH highlights Goodwill’s transformative work in the lives of North Texas residents by creating purpose and self-sufficiency through the power of a job.

The event will feature a conversation with Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion ski racer Lindsey Vonn at the Omni Dallas Hotel on Oct. 3. Vonn will give local sports enthusiasts and philanthropists an afternoon filled with inspiring tales.

Each year, THE LUNCH supports Goodwill’s Workforce Development Programs, which provides robust, no-cost individualized career services. Last year, the program enabled a team of success coaches and business engagement specialists to provide intensive services to 1,237 people with barriers.

THE LUNCH sponsors at or above $15,000 will have access to a meet and greet and photo opportunity with Vonn before the event begins. Table sponsorships are open until Sept. 3, 2024, and range from $10,000 to $100,000. Every dollar raised goes directly to supporting thousands of North Texans, allowing them a fair chance and opportunity for employment through a person-centric, holistic approach with multiple paths to success in a safe and supportive environment. DALLAS (September 2024) – What’s not to like? Beer? Good. Cotton candy? Good. Bacon? GOOOOD. Joey Tribbiani would be proud of Lakewood Brewing’s Cotton Candy Bacon Blonde Ale making its debut at The State Fair of Texas. The beer will pair alongside Rousso’s Cotton Candy Bacon on a Stick, this year’s winner of the “Best Taste – Sweet” category at the Big Tex® Choice Awards. Available in the Magnolia Beer Garden at The State Fair of Texas from September 27 to October 20, the beer is a cotton candy and bacon flavored blonde ale that is light, slightly sweet, and easy drinking.

“To be fair, this was a challenge even for our creative crew,” said Wim Bens, founder and president of Lakewood Brewing. “We’ve put bacon in beer before, and we’ve done fun sweet flavors as well, but to put both in a beer and make it super drinkable took a group effort. But the finished brew turned out fantastic. It’s easy to drink, has a slight cotton candy sweet taste and some smoky bacon in the nose. We’re beyond excited to partner with Rousso’s and can’t wait to have a few while strolling the Midway!”

Rousso’s Cotton Candy Bacon on a Stick is honey-smoked bacon on a stick cooked with a special seasoning and secret cotton candy syrup glaze and then wrapped in fluffy cotton candy and lightly caramelized to create the most unique piece of bacon in all of Texas, or anywhere for that matter.

Lakewood’s Cotton Candy Bacon Blonde will be exclusively available at the State Fair and at the Lakewood Brewing Taproom alongside fall favorites Pumpkin Spice Latte Temptress, Punkel, and Pony Pils, the beer of Mustang Nation.

Locally owned Lakewood just celebrated its 12th anniversary, and is most notably known for its Temptress Imperial Milk Stout, the best-selling craft stout in Texas. Today, its portfolio also includes Stub’s – Texas Pils, Goddess IPA, lagers, stouts, and popular seasonal offering, all of which draw beer lovers to the Brewery and Taproom at 2302 Executive Drive in Garland. Lakewood beers are available on shelves Texas-wide and can be found using Lakewood’s online Beer Finder.

About Lakewood Brewing Company

Lakewood Brewing Company is a family-owned, independent craft brewery making Seriously Fun Beer. Lakewood exploded onto the DFW brewing scene in 2012 and became famous for its Temptress Imperial Milk Stout, which is now the best-selling craft stout in Texas. Its diverse beer portfolio includes IPA's, Lagers, seasonal, and limited release beers. Visit them online at www.lakewoodbrewing.com.

The co-ed JL Long 6th grade soccer team is off to a fantastic start for the season.  The YMCA had the Bucs scheduled for 2 games this Saturday...first one at 9:15 AM against the Pandas and second at 11:45 AM against Solar Prep boys team.  To be clear, although we are a co-ed team, we play in the 5-6th grade boys division for play.  The first score of the season was made by Stella Storey and both teams played well to end in a 1-1 tie.  Between games, the players rested, played on the playground and had some light brunch or lunch snacks.  During the second game, we had some players that had NEVER played soccer or certain positions before and were not very confident.  They were told repeatedly by coach and teammates to just believe in yourself.  Super proud of all players but, Camron Sanders showed his true colors by playing wonderfully at goalie and only allowing 1 score.  A kudos goes out to the rest of the team, both offense and defense as the Bucs solidly beat Solar Prep 3-1.  Our 30th season should prove to be a great one!

On Thursday, September 19, our JV team competed at the Lewisville Rick Neill Memorial Invitational. The runners took on a flat course that circled a scenic lake, but the true challenge came from the heat and tough concrete terrain. Despite these conditions, our athletes stayed focused and gave outstanding performances. Here are some of the top results from both the male and female runners, showing their grit and determination on race day.

Individual and Team Highlights

Top Performers for the Male Runners

Varsity JV Boys (1st out of 6 Teams):

  •  Arya Khanna finished 7th - 18:04.36
  • Farhan Mohammed finished 9th - 18:05.77
  • Noah Law finished 17th - 18:47.84

 Coach Wren remarked:

We took the majority of our JV runners to the Lewisville Meet. Arya Khanna and Farhan Mohammed led the way for the boys, and I’m proud of how hard they competed. They were running against top competition and pulled out a solid win for the team.

JV Boys (4th out of 8 Teams):

  • Christian Todd finished 8th - 18:37.25
  • Lukas Stumm finished 12th - 18:50.03
  • Allan Ramirez finished 20th - 19:11.04

Coach Wren’s thoughts:
Our JV Boys finished 4th overall. Christian Todd, Lukas Stumm, and Allan Ramirez were top finishers. I love the development of our younger runners, and they are really starting to hit their stride as the season progresses.

Top Performers for the Female Runners

Varsity JV Girls:

  • Ishitha Mallidi finished 13th - 22:59.44
  • Vanini Agarwal finished 15th - 23:05.39
  • Carolina Saenz finished 16th - 23:06.46

Coach Wren shared:
We didn’t run enough girls to qualify as a team, but I was excited to see Ishitha Mallidi and Vanini Agarwal lead the way. These girls continue to improve week by week, and I’m really happy with their progress.

JV Girls (4th out of 9 Teams):

  • Kriti Chalgeri finished 15th - 24:40.89
  • Daniela Mazzini finished 16th - 24:45.32
  • Lojayna Ahmed finished 26th - 25:42.74

Coach Wren commented:
Our JV Girls finished 4th overall. Kriti Chalgeri and Daniela Mazzini were top performers, and the entire team continues to get better each week. I’m proud of how they’re developing.

Coach Wren’s Final Remarks

We will continue our season at the Jesuit Classic this Saturday at the Prestonwood Polo Club in Oak Point. I’m excited to see how both our JV and Varsity runners perform as we build on the momentum from these recent meets.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, our JV runners continue building on their strong performances, while our Varsity team prepares for the Hoka/McNeil Invitational in Round Rock on Saturday, September 21. This meet is a key opportunity for the Varsity squad to compete on the state course and gain valuable experience ahead of the championship. With each race, our athletes are growing stronger and more focused on their goals. The hard work they’re putting in now will surely pay off as the season advances. Until next time, we will continue to push forward.

The Collin County Soil & Water Conservation District is sponsoring a fall wildflower planting program during September and October.  One-pound bags of Texas Bluebonnet seed are available for purchase for $48 per pound.  One-pound bags of Fall Texas native wildflower mix are available for $30 per pound and contain over 20 different varieties, including Back-eyed Susan, coneflowers, Showy Evening Primrose, Indian Blanket, milkweeds and Mexican Hat.

Native flowers require less water and maintenance than conventional landscaping flowers and plants and can better withstand our sometimes extreme Texas climate.  Wildflowers also add beauty to the landscape and provide food for wildlife.  The Collin County SWCD uses funds raised from projects such as this to support local conservation programs and education within the District.

One-pound bags of wildflower seed are available for purchase at the District office, 1404 N. McDonald Street, Suite 100, in McKinney, now thru early November, or while supplies last.  Please call before you come to make sure the seed is in stock at 972-542-0081 ext. 3.  September and October are the optimal times to plant these wildflowers, and seeding instructions are available with purchases.  Get yours now, while supplies last!

Galleria Dallas has been one of the top holiday destinations for shoppers across North Texas and around the world for more than four decades. From the iconic 95-foot-tall Christmas tree to Missile Toes, the ice-skating, back-flipping Santa who shoots fireworks from his skates, the holiday celebration at Galleria Dallas is recognized as one of the grandest nationwide.

The holiday season at Galleria Dallas kicks off Nov. 10 with the installation of America’s tallest indoor Christmas tree, which features LED lighting by Twinkly that allows for brilliant, animated and immersive light shows on the tree. The tree has 850 branches – each the size of a small Christmas tree – plus more than 15,000 ornaments, 215,000 points of light and a 100-pound, 10-foot-tall LED star. The tree will be complete on the evening of Nov. 13.

Festivities continue throughout the season with live entertainment and numerous other holiday events, Nov. 22-Jan. 6.

Santa arrives at Galleria Dallas on Friday, Nov. 22, and will welcome guests in Santaland on Level I near Banana Republic with a magical experience and amazing visuals. Galleria Dallas is proud to offer the area’s most technologically advanced Santa experience, where families board a magical train, seeing the sights as they move from Dallas to the North Pole, and thanks to Santaland’s special wish list technology, Santa knows what kids want under the tree on Christmas morning. This year, there will be designated times for Santa experiences for those with pets, families with children with special needs, and even a Spanish-speaking Santa. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made online now at SnowDayDallas.com.

They say every snowflake is unique, and so is every visit to SNOWDAY, the acclaimed immersive exhibit that changes every holiday season and has become a tradition for DFW families. Guests will explore the secret town where Santa’s elves live, with nearly 10,000 square feet of Hollywood-grade sets and styling creating some of the elves’ favorite places, along with state-of-the-art, touch-free photo technology. SNOWDAY is integrating AI image processing into a photo op for the first time, which will allow for surreal holiday photos of guests. Additional new features include a new multimedia show including lights, sounds and videos, culminating with “real” snowfall; a Christmas Kaleidoscope photo op; and, of course, the return of fan-favorite rooms like the Christmas lights maze, which now has twinkling lights. Guests also can purchase snacks at Santa’s helpers’ favorite watering hole, The Tipsy Elf. Even if you’ve been to SNOWDAY before, you’ll want to come again to capture all its magical, Instagrammable moments.

For thousands of shoppers, a trip to Galleria Dallas to enjoy the abundance of sales and promotions offered on Black Friday (Nov. 29) starts the holiday season in good cheer. This year, there are even more reasons to choose Galleria Dallas – the newly expanded H&M including the first H&M Home in Texas, UNIQLO, the expanded Lululemon, Pandora and North Italia.

The holiday festivities kick off at noon on Black Friday with the impressive Grand Tree Lighting Celebration, which features a spectacular free ice-skating show with nationally recognized figure skaters including two-time National Champion and 2022 Olympian Ashley Cain, two-time Olympian Keegan Messing and 2022 Olympians Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker. Stay for the fireworks finale as the tree is lit by Missile Toes, Galleria’s famed ice-skating Santa. The lighting celebration will be hosted again Saturday, Nov. 30 at noon.

A ticketed Grand Holiday Ice Show on Dec. 8 will benefit local charity Broadway Dallas.  Among the featured skaters: 2022 Olympian Mariah Bell. Tickets for family pods will be available for purchase in November at GalleriaDallas.com/holiday.

Galleria Dallas will celebrate Hanukkah on Dec. 29, with a Menorah Lighting led by Rabbi Andrew Paley from Temple Shalom and a performance by Kol Shalom, Temple Shalom’s youth choir. Sufganiyots will be served to attendees.

During the holiday season, Galleria Dallas shines with holiday décor top to bottom throughout each level. For those guests wishing to stay and make a weekend out of it, the adjoining Westin Galleria Dallas hotel is conveniently located and accessible to Galleria Dallas. Guests have access to holiday shopping and dining at more than 200 retailers including several exclusive, specialty boutiques and stores such as Apple, Bachendorf’s, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Mango, Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co and Zara. Enjoy all the season has to offer, including Galleria Dallas’ extended holiday hours, while checking off the gift-giving list!

Galleria Dallas enhanced its Outdoor Plaza this year, making it the perfect gathering spot, and guests will find an interactive art exhibit there from Nov. 1-Jan. 2. Roseaux is a “particip’active” installation that invites users to activate the base of the larger-than-life reeds, rhythmically propelling myriad colors up the stem. Can you and your friends turn the reeds the same solid color?

This holiday season, more than 60 local groups will perform wintry favorites throughout the center at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Please see the full schedule and more information on holiday events at GalleriaDallas.com/holiday.
