SCALE Healthcare Honors USOSM President and CEO.

Irving-based U.S. Oral Surgery Management (USOSM) President and CEO Richard Hall recently received the SCALE Community MSO Excellence Award, which recognizes excellence in healthcare management. Hall was one of just seven executives chosen for this honor, which was awarded based on “hard work, commitment to excellence and making a significant impact within the healthcare community,” according to SCALE Healthcare. Award winners were announced during the SCALE Healthcare Leadership Conference in New York City.

"We’re dedicated to enabling the highest levels of clinical excellence, particularly when it comes to patient care and safety,” stated Hall in a press release. “The SCALE Community MSO Excellence Award is reflective of these ideals, which are extremely important to us, and I’m deeply honored by the recognition.”

A prominent consulting firm serving the healthcare services community, SCALE Healthcare was founded in 2019 by Roy Bejarano and Jason Schifman. The company seeks to elevate management performance in healthcare services.

Hall joined USOSM in February of 2018 as employee No. 3 and has shepherded the company through its early growth and continued development, helping to shape USOSM’s vision and trajectory. Under his leadership, USOSM has grown to include more than 250 surgeon partners in 28 states.

Previously, Hall served as president and CEO of Oncology Services International. In addition, he served as president of Alliance Oncology and senior vice president of business development, marketing and physician recruitment for US Oncology. Prior to that, he served as COO of PatientKeeper, president of the acute care division at McKesson Corporation and owner/chair of BrightStar Care. Hall began his career with American Hospital Supply.

Hall currently serves on the board of USOSM, Sevaredent and Christine’s Hope for Kids. In addition, he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Dental Support Organizations and the Healthcare Services Advisory Council for RiverGlade Capital.

A former U.S. Marine, Hall is actively involved with several nonprofit organizations that support veterans and the families of fallen and disabled service members, including Folds of Honor, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and Operation Restore Oral Health. Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from Penn State and is a graduate of Duke University’s executive healthcare program.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Highland Park Literary Festival (HP LitFest) recently announced that Mark Sullivan, New York Times bestselling author of Beneath a Scarlet Sky and a former investigative reporter, will be the featured speaker of this year’s community keynote event on February 20, 2025, in the Highland Park High School Auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The HP LitFest Committee would like to thank La Fiesta de la Seis Banderas for generously supporting its mission for the past 24 years, enabling the organization to achieve prominence as a community literary festival.

HP LitFest was founded in 1995 by parents and Highland Park High School (HPHS) faculty members who mutually desired to create a program to provide literary enrichment and spark the interest and imagination of high school students.  HP LitFest has since grown into a highly anticipated series of events for students and community members, culminating in a two-day festival.  HP LitFest remains committed to its mission of inspiring and encouraging students, the local community, and the greater Dallas area to celebrate language in all its written and spoken forms.  In the past several years, HP LitFest has proudly expanded its programming from the high school into every HPISD school.

“Each year, HP LitFest serves thousands in and around our community, in every age group.  We are proud to serve more than 6,500 people from children to adults,” said HP LitFest Co-chair Ashley Blanchette. “Thanks to the leadership that came before us, HP LitFest is widely recognized for the caliber of keynote and featured speakers and workshop presenters we secure for our students and community. As we mark this significant milestone in our event’s history, we are thrilled to welcome author Mark Sullivan.”

Mark is the acclaimed author of over 18 novels, including the #1 New York Times bestselling “Private” series, which he writes with James Patterson. His beloved book, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, based on the epic tale of forgotten war hero Pino Lella, has resonated deeply with audiences everywhere.

Before becoming a celebrated novelist, Mark was a correspondent at Reuters and a reporter at States News Service, where he served as a backup reporter to the D.C. bureaus of the New York Times, Newsday and the New York Daily News. He later became an award-winning investigative reporter at the San Diego Tribune, where his unique journalistic style focused on the cultures of the things he was investigating. His first novel, The Fall Line, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the year, a rare honor for a debut author.  Later, his breakout novel, The Purification Ceremony, made bestseller’s lists all over the world.

“We believe that literary writing offers unique insight into the human experience and has its value not only in the story that it tells, but also in how the story is told,” said HP LitFest Co-Chair Julie Melihercik. “Consequently, HP LitFest showcases and provides access to professional writers who offer substantive artistic content through either fiction or nonfiction, and who can offer guidance or inspiration with respect to the craft and the appreciation of literary writing.”

Not only will approximately 2,100 HPHS students attend an assembly-style presentation with our featured author; they will also participate in at least one workshop during their high school’s regularly scheduled English class on February 21, 2025.  These workshops are put on by 25 accomplished novelists, journalists, poets, songwriters, and playwrights from all over the country.

HP LitFest’s programming includes a poetry competition in the elementary schools, judged by LitFest Student Committee Members, with winning poetry, illustrated by middle school art students, displayed at the Highland Park and University Park Public Libraries; an open Mic Night, providing a safe platform for high school students to showcase literary expertise among their peers; a student writing contest and awards breakfast; two scholarships awarded to HPHS students who have demonstrated a passion for writing; parent and student book clubs; and a LitFest Student Committee for HPHS students wishing to further explore various forms of literature.

In addition, Flick Fest for LitFest, the primary fundraising event for HP LitFest, will feature acclaimed screenwriter and two-time Academy Award nominee, David Magee. It will be held Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 7 p.m. at the Angelica Theater in Mockingbird Station. Flick Fest will offer a showing and discussion of movie clips of which David has written the screenplays. Donations of $35 or more include the movie screening, discussion, a beverage and popcorn. Visit https://hplitfest.com/flick-fest/ for reservations and additional detail.

HP LitFest is made possible by the generous donations from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, HP Arts and HPHS PTA along with families of the school district and beyond.

HPLitFest is free and open to the public.  For more information or to support HP LitFest, visit https://hplitfest.com/.

Over 100 of Texas’ top high school runners lined up at the UIL 6A State Cross Country Championships on November 1-2, 2024, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, and Coppell's Maya Easterwood delivered big! Maya took an impressive 3rd place with a time of 17:36.80, finishing among the state’s best.

Facing some serious competition from across Texas, Maya held her own and earned a podium spot, right up there with champions Macy Wingard from Denton Braswell and Lily Fawcett from Bridgeland.

Coach Wren shared his excitement, saying:

"We are so incredibly proud of Maya. Finishing 3rd at the State Meet is an incredible accomplishment. She had an unbelievable season but it wasn’t surprising because of how hard she works in practice. I know she will continue to grow as a runner and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her these next two high school seasons.”

Congratulations to Maya and to the entire Coppell cross-country team for an incredible season of dedication and hard work! Each runner pushed their limits, supported their teammates, and represented Coppell with pride. Here’s to an even stronger season next year!

Alone With a Tasman Tiger

Chic Charlie, #2

by

Jane Ellyson

Unique settings and intriguing double storylines make for a great two-for-one story.

Alone With a Tasman Tiger is the second book in author Jane Ellyson’s Chic Charlie series and focuses heavily on Scott and Charlotte Harmon’s friend, Sebastian. Readers new to the series should be able to easily slip into the current story without having read the previous novel; there’s enough backstory mentioned for readers to catch up comfortably. With its intriguing premises, unique settings, and engaging characters, I didn’t want to put the book down.

The plot is well-paced and compelling, beginning with the characters who are participating in the Australian survival competition television show Alone. I greatly enjoyed the day-to-day of the contestants and the insider view of this type of TV entertainment. Having heard that almost everything in Australia can kill you, I was on pins and needles the entire time that the contestants were in the bush, just waiting for something dire to happen. Part II switches to the yacht race from Sydney to Hobart and the Blue Gazelle that Scott is captaining. The author has the timelines of these two separate parts overlapping, and I liked how it worked out: there was no bouncing back and forth between the two major storylines. The day headings made keeping this straight simple and easy. The race is suspenseful, and danger comes quickly in the form of a terrible storm at sea, as well as the appearance of a mysterious and unidentified black yacht that is not part of the race.

The resolution to the story comes as quite a surprise and I liked how Charlotte/Charlie and Galina/Betty worked together to find the inexplicably missing Sebastian. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I’m now looking forward to reading book one in the series as well.

I recommend ALONE WITH A TASMAN TIGER to mystery readers, especially those who enjoy television survival shows and boat races.

The Cadieux Murders

Historic Homes Mystery, #3

by

R.J. Koreto

Intriguing tale of secrets and murder!

The Cadieux Murders is the latest novel in author R.J. Koreto’s Historic Homes Mystery series and this intriguing tale of family secrets and murder does not disappoint. Although the third book in the series, readers new to the story will easily be able to read and enjoy it as a standalone.

Successful romance writer Bronwyn Merrick has retained architect and ‘house whisperer’ Wren Fontaine to update her new home, the historically significant house designed by the famed French architect Marius Cadieux and the site of a tragic, unsolved murder in 1955. Cadieux was Wren’s father’s mentor and a man whom she herself had fond childhood memories, so she is eager to take on the project. But before work can even begin, a woman who is stalking Bronwyn and the attorney representing the house’s previous owner are found murdered, one in the very room where the original murder occurred. Wren senses that, somehow, the home is central to the deaths, and as she researches the past, she hopes to find the answers to what is going on in the present.

Wren has progressed so much, both emotionally and socially, since her first appearance in The Greenleaf Murders, the first book in the series, and much of that growth can be attributed to her relationship with her cool, supportive girlfriend, Hadley Vanderwerf. They are such a complementary couple, and I’m so glad to see Wren’s new confidence. Together, the pair draws on their social and academic connections to build a complete picture of the design and conception of the Cadieux House and the history of the individuals involved: Marius Cadieux, his muse Rebecca Rodriguez Blaine and her husband Dennis and daughter Shoshana, and the new owner Bronwyn Merrick.

The storytelling is absorbing, and well-placed twists really surprised me along the way to the final resolution. Wren repeatedly informs anyone and all that she is not good at seeing beyond people’s public faces, but she proves time and time again that she’s more adept than she realizes. Important pieces to the puzzle come from several different sources and putting them together to reveal the truth behind the Cadieux House murders is sure to entertain.

I recommend THE CADIEUX HOUSE MURDERS to cozy mystery readers, especially those interested in old houses, home makeovers, and historic architecture.
