Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 19, seafood lovers will have a new reason to flock to their local Fish City Grill or Half Shells location. The acclaimed restaurants, which are known for providing great seafood and made-from-scratch recipes at affordable prices, have worked with Cape Cod Oyster Company, New England’s premier oyster farmers, to launch the Mystic Mermaid, a proprietary oyster available only at Fish City Grill and Half Shells.

These unique, signature oysters come from Osterville, Massachusetts, on the south side of Cape Cod. Raised within 150 yards of Nantucket Sound, these oysters have a heavy brine (27 ppt. salinity) on the front end with a sweet aftertaste. The farming method used to grow the Mystic Mermaid, which includes a FlipFarm nursery with a natural-bottom plant finish, helps to create a deep cup and a heavy shell in which the tasty bivalves can grow. Each of these oysters is 3 to 3½” inches in length.

Mystic Mermaid Oysters will be available beginning Nov. 19 for $21 per half-dozen and $42 per dozen. They will be served with a delicious cucumber-citrus mignonette created by Executive Chef Molly Winkler to pair perfectly with the briny, sweet flavors of the oyster.

Co-CEO Lovett Bayne sees the launch of the Mystic Mermaid as fulfilling the restaurant’s ongoing promise to customers.

“While we’ve had a robust oyster program since we opened in 1994, the launch of the Mystic Mermaid allows us to create a truly unique experience for our diners,” Bayne said. “There is a real mystique surrounding seafood, and giving our customers the opportunity to sample the finest of East Coast oysters in a way unavailable anywhere else allows us to celebrate and honor the appeal and allure of fresh seafood.”

Mystic Mermaid is the perfect name for the restaurant’s custom oyster, not only because of the team’s commitment to exceptional seafood but also because of the beautiful mermaid murals created by noted artist Nataliya Plambeck in many of the Fish City Grill and Half Shells location.

Farming since 1983, Cape Cod Oyster Company is one of the largest oyster growers in New England. Known for its commitment to sustainability and traceability, its oysters are sourced from well-managed hatcheries, responsibly produced and harvested.

“As a family-owned business with a real pride in providing exceptional seafood, we’re honored to have been selected by the team at Fish City Grill to elevate their oyster experience,” said Cape Cod Oyster Company founder Al Suprenant. “They represent the type of honest, ethical business partners we seek when sharing our oysters.”

Each Fish City Grill and Half Shells restaurant will serve a rotating variety of raw oysters in addition to the Mystic Mermaid. Additionally, the restaurants regularly serve various other oyster dishes, such as oyster nachos and chargrilled oysters.

In a time when pollinator populations are facing critical threats, How To Make a Pollinator Garden (Como Hacer un Jardín Polinizador) is blooming with practical advice for children ages 6-12 to help sustain these essential species. This bilingual picture book in English and Spanish, written by Texas Woman’s University (TWU) professor Dr. Camelia Maier, provides step-by-step guidance on creating pollinator-friendly gardens and explains the vital role pollinators play in our environment.

Available online and in hardcover at twu.edu/butterfly-garden for $21.39 plus shipping, this engaging book offers an inspiring and hands-on approach for young readers to understand and actively support pollinators through accessible scientific instruction and colorful illustrations. All proceeds benefit the Dr. Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden at Texas Woman’s, helping to protect pollinator habitats on the TWU campus and beyond. How To Make a Pollinator Garden makes an ideal gift this holiday season, supporting not only young readers but also pollinator conservation efforts.

Although this book is written for children ages 6-12, it offers helpful guidance for adults interested in transforming part of their yard into a pollinator habitat. The steps are straightforward, making it accessible even for those with limited space. This approach not only yields a low-maintenance garden but also makes a valuable contribution to the environment.

Butterfly and pollinator gardens are crucial for many reasons, primarily because pollinators play a vital role in food production by pollinating crops. In essence, they help provide food. Unfortunately, pollinator populations are declining due to habitat fragmentation, pesticide use, and climate change. Every garden created helps expand and enhance their habitat. In urban areas, pollinator habitats are often fragmented by concrete, buildings, streets, and highways. These gardens not only support food production but also add beauty and bring vibrant greenery, flowers, butterflies, and bees to our surroundings.

Dr. Maier, a molecular biologist and Director of the TWU Herbarium, brings her expertise to the book, drawing from her experience in plant biology, ecology, and pollinator relationships. Design and illustrations by TWU graphic design majors Chelsea Flores and Kathryn Kelly, under the guidance of Sheli Petersen, TWU Professor of Graphic Design & Illustration, bring the book to life with vibrant, instructional imagery. Dr. Maria Serrano of the TWU Division of Biology translated the book into Spanish, ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences.

Alongside the book, readers are encouraged to visit TWU’s two butterfly gardens—the Dr. Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden and the Carroll Abbott Memorial Wildflower Sanctuary. Both gardens feature native plants designed to attract and sustain pollinators, particularly monarch butterflies and native bees, and serve as living laboratories for sustainable gardening and habitat restoration. The Dr. Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden is recognized as an official Monarch Watch waystation, providing essential resources such as milkweeds and nectar plants that support monarchs throughout their migration cycle, as well as a certified Wildlife Habitat.

Located at TWU’s Denton campus, the gardens are open for group tours and educational classes, offering young nature enthusiasts and families a chance to learn hands-on about creating pollinator habitats. To schedule a tour, contact the Dr. Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden at 940-898-2358.

I Know She Was There

by

Jennifer Sadera

Exhilaratingly mind-blowing.

I Know She Was There by Jennifer Sadera is a mesmerizing tale of mystery, murder, and mental illness. Every evening, a young mother walks the upscale Deer Crossing neighborhood pushing her daughter's baby carriage, but what started as post-partum exercise has morphed into an addiction to watching the lives of the residents unfold, baring their secrets and sins to her observant eyes.

Wow! What seems to start out as a tragic domestic drama soon became an exciting thriller where nothing is what it initially appears. The storytelling is clever and cunning, drawing me in from the start, and the pages almost turned themselves; I was so engrossed in following the twists and turns.

The story unfolds via the troubled narrative of Caroline Case, the estranged wife of Tim and mother to Emmy. I immediately began to wonder what was really going on with this woman, as supposedly normal people clearly voiced their doubts about what she was reporting. Even the character herself starts to think maybe she is seeing things that aren't there. Twists and turns in the plot made me doubt every first impression for a good reason. It's one of the best books I've read this year.

I recommend I KNOW SHE WAS THERE to readers of thrillers, mysteries, and psychological suspense.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the author through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

The Dallas Academy community came together in vibrant style on Saturday, November 9th, for the annual DAwg Run, which featured a burst of color as participants in the one-mile race were showered with bright, colorful powder. Josh Maki claimed the top spot as the overall winner, with Adrian Gongora and Baylen Gongora following in second and third place. Every runner left with medals, t-shirts, and big smiles—and even our furry friends got in on the action, with one lucky dog winning prizes in the pet costume contest.

"The DAwg Run continues to be one of my favorite events of the year, and this year was extra special with our biggest turnout yet!" said Jodie Green, 6th grade parent who helped to organize the DAwg Run this year.  We're so proud to see so many people show up to build community and support our school."

The day was filled with family-friendly activities, including a Chili Cook-Off featuring 14 teams. The RedZone Heat, hosted by the Strickler family, earned the "Best Theme" award; Chili Dawgs, hosted by the Lipper family, won the "People's Choice" award; and Netflix and Chili, hosted by the Linz-Thorn family, took home the "Best Tasting" prize.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and participants, the event raised over $23,000, all of which will benefit Dallas Academy students through tuition assistance and academic improvements.  Guests also enjoyed a cake walk, face painting, slime-making, and a petting zoo, made possible by the support of local businesses.

A special thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, CW Custom Flooring, as well as all our sponsors and volunteers, whose contributions helped make this year’s DAwg Run a tremendous success. We are grateful for the continued support of our community!
