Nearly 1,000 youth of color (ages 12-18) from around the US will compete in Stomp Wars, the nation’s largest step competition for the grand prize & scholarships. Movies such as “Stomp the Yard” and “DrumLine” have popularized this African American dance form which is a high-energy form of stepping and dancing mixed with acrobatic moves. Stomp Wars youth steppers come from around the nation, with 25 states currently represented. In addition to the Stomp Wars competition, Instagram sensation Big Boss Vette will perform her hit single “Pretty Girls Walk Like This”.
STOMP WARS is a national youth step competition founded in 2007 by national on-air personality Rock-T of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show to inspire youth and young adults to STOMP down the negative barriers and to look to the future with a positive mindset. What began with 150 people now convenes audiences of more than 6,000 annually. Engagement in Stomp Wars and step has proven results for youth who are often at risk of falling prey to exploitative systems, most specifically, incarceration and leads to increased graduation rates and access to college.
