A Class of 2015 graduate from The Episcopal School of Dallas, Christina Gordon was recently one of 10 named to Richmond Inno Under 25's 2021 list. Gordon, a Virginia Commonwealth University doctoral student in dentistry, developed the Proxy-Flosser to help people with braces clean their teeth. The Proxy-Flosser idea came from Gordon's real-life experiences. She used $10,000 from the VCU Commercialization Fund to develop the prototype and was one of five to receive funding.

This is not Gordon's first time to use her experience to help others. In ninth grade at ESD, she launched Friendsinkneed.com to encourage and support fellow student-athletes recovering from injuries.

Gordon published Finding Hope: A Dog's Tale her junior year. On a fun note, she read her book to the (then) fourth-grade Class of 2022 as part of their Texas history study! Read more about her book here.

Proud of you, Eagle!

The Jennifer and John Eagle Gallery at The Episcopal School of Dallas is home to many student artists exhibits throughout the year, from middle school 2D and 3D units from class to upper school AP artist collections. Now, for the first time ever, the Eagle Gallery contains an exhibit featuring Eagles works of all ages!

While parents are usually able to view their students’ artworks as they visit ESD's campus throughout the year, this has been difficult over the last year due to COVID-19 related restrictions of on-campus visitors. As a result, ESD's Fine Arts Department had the idea to create an exhibit to let our community catch up on some of the things they missed. “We wanted to showcase work made last year we were unable to show because of restrictions,” said Brenda Hatter, Visual Arts Department Chair. “The team decided to try an all-level show since we are One Campus One Community. We have had incredible feedback from parents and are already committed to hosting an all-level show annually.”

The “Little to Big” all-school art exhibit features a collection of unseen works like Primer mixed-media pieces, middle school sculptures, and upper school AP photography produced in the 19-20 school year, as well as a sampling of current works. Many classes have taken “field trips” across campus to visit the exhibit together. “The look on the faces of the little ones is absolutely priceless,” said Hatter. “One of our Primer kids declared he’s now a famous artist.”

The “Little to Big” exhibit is open through October 19 and is available for viewing by appointment.

Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program each year. Last week during daily worship, The Episcopal School of Dallas honored seven seniors who were recognized in this year's National Merit Scholarship Program.

ESD had one student named a Semi-Finalist, representing the top one percent of PSAT scores taken in 2020-21. Congratulations to Holden Moore '22! Holden will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards worth about $30 million that will be offered next spring.

ESD also recognized five students as Commended Students. Out of the 50,000 top-scorers on the 2020-21 PSAT, some 34,000 were named Commended Students for their outstanding performance. Congratulations to Connor Awbrey '22, Sydney Knodel '22, Reid Moorman '22, Virginia Nussbaumer '22, Kai Robinson '22, and Rider Yeaman '22! Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Congratulations to these students on their outstanding academic accomplishments. We are so proud of you, Eagles!

Three years ago during The Episcopal School of Dallas's plans of uniting as One Campus, One Community, student advisory leaders brainstormed a way to unite the three divisions. The result? A ceremony similar to Pass It On, ESD's longest-standing tradition, but for the "freshmen" of the two divisions: ninth graders and fifth graders. Like Pass It On, the Pin It On ceremony celebrates the shared ESD identity between the two classes.

"While one of our newer traditions, Pin it On allows ninth graders to reflect on their own middle school experience and then offer their wisdom to our newest middle schoolers," said Meg Fahrenbrook '01, ESD's Assistant Head of Middle School. "The beauty of this ceremony is that these two classes of Eagles will meet again in four years during Pass it On, one of our longest-standing traditions. This new tradition is just a continuation of our values of older students passing the torch to the younger students."

The pins fifth-graders received were designed by members of the ninth-grade class. The design is specific to the Classes of 2025 and 2029, as it has both classes' graduation years, and signifies a special link the classes will always share. The pin’s design is anchored by ESD’s shield and three crosses representing the Founding Tenets.

This year's ceremony was held on Monday, October 4, 2021.

Want to hear from the Student Advisory Council on how this tradition came to life? Read ESD's post from 2019 on the first Pin It On ceremony.

The Episcopal School of Dallas Girls Volleyball Coach Laura Gomez reached the 400-win milestone for her career when the Eagles defeated Frassati Catholic on Saturday, September 4, in the Prince of Peace North Texas Invitational.

Coach Gomez is in her 21st season leading the volleyball program at ESD. In 2007 she guided ESD to the SPC Championship, along with runner-up finishes in 2006, 2009, 2016, and 2019. Coach Gomez also holds the school record for most wins in a single varsity sport. Gomez joins Varsity Boys Soccer Program Director Mark Gardner and Varsity Boys Basketball Program Director Corey Henderson as coaches with at least 300 varsity wins at ESD. She was also inducted into ESD's Keri Scholtz Hall '87 Convocation earlier this year for 20 years of outstanding service to the school.

"While we are most proud of this tremendous accomplishment by Coach Gomez, we are equally grateful for the countless lives she has positively influenced over the 21 years leading our volleyball program," said ESD's Director of Athletics, Dan Gill. "She has led our program to unprecedented heights during her time at ESD and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this coaching milestone with her."

Ground Zero 360 honors the sacrifice of the victims and families of the 9/11 terror attacks. The traveling exhibition containing original works of art and 9/11 artifacts allows the spectator to step into the past and explore the startling aftermath of one of the most tragic events in American history. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks and the 10th anniversary of Ground Zero 360, this year’s exhibition includes interpretive artwork from over 50 world-renowned artists that explore their reactions to and experiences of the events of 9/11.

ESD Upper School Film and Fine Arts Teacher Bobby Weiss was one of the 50 selected to show in the collaborative exhibit. "'Elephant Tracks’ represents a literal staging of those moments my senior year of high school, listening to the news reports the morning of 9/11, where sense and rationale must contend with the incomprehensible,” said Weiss. “Steel monuments to American ingenuity were forced to become symbols of warring ideologies, painted here as items that mimic real objects and yet remain unplaceable. The sharp angles create a tableau that these totems might forever reside within, cut from the cloth of time to become a shift in the culture. The elephant in the room can do nothing but cower and wait for time to reveal what truths were once hidden in plain sight.”

The Ground Zero 360 exhibition is one of four Remember 9/11 Exhibitions represented at the Museum of Biblical Art.

Film students at The Episcopal School of Dallas continue to impress with their work behind the camera! Six students recently had films accepted into the All American High School Film Festival. The AAHSFF is the premier destination for talented high school filmmakers and media arts enthusiasts from around the world. Each year, they receive thousands of submissions and judges select the best of the best to be screened at the festival. ESD is excited to recognize six Eagles this year:

Sam Curtis ’21: Beyond Protein, Comedy

Robert Giles ’21: Tophet, Experimental

Lily Hagge ’21: CoronaVirus: Through the Ages, Documentary

Gabe Letcher ’21: The Life of a Penny, Experimental

Dani Nisbet ’22: Musicalia, Experimental

Ava Thompson ’21: Enough, Drama

Despite having the festival virtually this year, the students will tune in online this weekend to view their films with classmates, as well as other submissions from across the nation. “I have gone to the invitational in past years, and have to say the organization is something really awesome that I hope continues to flourish even throughout the online experience,” said Sam Curtis, who will be featured in the comedy category. “I’m happy with the final product of the film, and hope that the festival judges enjoy its dark humor and irony.” Others submitted in the experimental section, or like Ava, in the drama section. “I worked really hard on creating a very personal, sensitive film, so I am so glad that it came through to the viewer,” she said. “Getting into All-American was just the cherry on top.”

Five of the six students recognized are seniors this year and are excited to start the year with such an honor. “Through my four years of film class, I've always wanted my film to be accepted and am honored to finally have my art chosen,” said Gabe Letcher. “I never would have thought a film about pennies filmed during quarantine in my closet would be selected.”

Bravo, Eagles! ESD is so proud of your hard work and dedication.
