“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Texans Can Academy - Garland students were proud to echo the sentiments of one of the most pivotal advocates for African American rights at the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. Students and staff gathered to walk in the parade while providing information about the dropout recovery and prevention high school.

Hosted by the NAACP-Garland, the annual parade and celebration was held on Saturday, January 18 at 10 a.m. Parade participants included Garland businesses and nonprofits. A special MLK Commemorative Program following the parade honored the lifetime achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We are very proud of the students that participated in this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade,” said Texans Can Academy - Garland Principal Daniel Johnson. “Opportunities like the parade offer our students a chance to make a difference in not only their own lives, but in the lives of those around them. Our staff is eager to continue teaching them skills they can use both in and out of the classroom as well as providing value-added resources.”

Texans Can Academies serves students who have struggled in a traditional high school environment and offers students the chance to achieve a high school diploma instead of a GED. The nonprofit strives to be a value-added organization, providing services for students both in and out of the classroom such as volunteering opportunities, college and career opportunities, eye exams and glasses, transportation, immunizations and more.

National School Breakfast Week is March 2-6 and is a time to highlight the importance of school breakfast. Something that Texans Can Academies supports all school year to give students a healthy start to their day.

According to the School Nutrition Association, balanced nutrition throughout the day contributes to student success in and out of the classroom. Research demonstrates that school breakfast consumption:

  • Boosts students' academic performance, grades and test scores

  • Increases concentration, alertness, comprehension and memory

  • Improves classroom behavior

  • Reduces absenteeism and tardiness

Texans Can Academies’ goal is to support their students in any way they can to ensure they receive a quality education and earn their high school diploma. They don’t want their students to have to worry about finances getting in the way of achieving this goal. Therefore to address the wellbeing of students, Texans Can Academies provides free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students at their 14 campuses in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

“Healthy breakfast options, such as whole grain muffins, whole grain rich cereals, and fresh fruit, are provided to students to help kick off their day in a positive way,”said Salihah Majors, Texans Can Academies’ Student Nutrition Services Coordinator.

Texans Can Academies serve students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting by offering students, aged 14 to 21, a second chance at earning their high school diploma instead of taking a General Education Development (GED). With the help of the Essilor Vision Foundation, 53 Texans Can Academy - Carrollton/Farmers Branch students received free eye exams and glasses in one day.

Texans Can Academy - Carrollton/Farmers Branch and the Essilor Vision Foundation recently partnered
to provide students with free eye exams and glasses. Through the Kids Vision For Life program, 53
students received free exams and glasses in one day.
According to the Education Week Research Center analysis of National Survey of Children’s Health Data,
2018, nearly 1 in 3 children have not had their vision tested in at least two years. Reading, writing, smart
board work and using computers are among the visual tasks high school students perform daily. A
student’s eyes are constantly in use in the classroom to capture the information needed to learn and
follow directions. When one’s vision is not functioning properly, education and participation in sports can
suffer. Texans Can Academy ensures students in need of vision exams and prescription glasses are able
to receive the care they need to improve their academic performance.
Kids Vision For Life has worked with Texans Can Academies for low-cost vision services since 2015.
They provide direct vision services to students through mobile clinics and are able to make prescription
glasses the same day as the on-site exam. Texans Can Academy absorbs the $50 fee per student for
eyeglasses, frames and lenses, freeing students and their families of any financial responsibility.
Since the partnership began, the Essilor Vision Foundation has contributed vision services to eight out of
the 14 total Texans Can Academy campuses. Over 4,500 Texans Can Academies’ students have
received free exams and glasses through the program.
Texans Can Academies welcome the Kids Vision For Life program to campuses as needed during each
school year. Texans Can Academies are a unique network of 14 charter schools located in Austin, Dallas,
Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools
of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. To date, more than
162,139 youth have been given a second chance at life with the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
