St. Andrew UMC’s CareerCare Group Welcomes Back Career Guru Abby Kohut to Speak

on “How to Interview Like a Rock Star,” Providing Helpful Tips and Strategies to Job Seekers

Kohut will also reveal and present the two winners of her North Texas Total Career Makeover Contest

EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Plano, Texas –May 8, 2014 – St. Andrew United Methodist Church’s CareerCare group welcomes back Career Guru Abby Kohut to speak on the interviewing process and reveal the two winners of her North Texas Total Career Makeover Contest on Wednesday, May 21, 10 a.m., at Festival Hall, 5801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano, TX 75093.  The event is open to the public.

Kohut will not only share her tips on interviewing and dressing for success, but she will also conduct an interactive mock interview with the audience.  As attendees arrive they will be asked to submit  questions that might be used in the presentation.

“This activity has proven to be a fun and engaging way to help people craft great answers to some commonly asked interview questions,” said Kohut.  “Additionally, it is a helpful process for interviewees to learn some strong questions they might ask.”

Kohut is widely known for her website AbsolutelyAbby.com, which was selected as one of Forbes.com’s “Top 100 Websites for Your Career” in 2013. Over the past two decades, she has recruited over 10,000 people for a variety of companies.  She is also the president and recruiting consultant for Staffing Symphony, LLC, and was selected as one of Fast Company Magazine’s Top 100 Influential People Online.  Additionally, Kohut was named one of "15 Career Experts Not to Miss on Twitter" by The Daily Muse; one of the "Top Twitter Accounts Job Seekers Must Follow" by Youtern.com; and one of "101 career-experts-job-hunters should-follow" by Careercopilot.com.

“In 2012 my husband and business partner Ken and I left our home in New Jersey in an RV to embark on an 8,000 mile journey to reach and teach 1,000,000 job seekers how to stand out in a crowd of more than 14,000,000 unemployed.  This is a labor of love for us.  We do not earn an income from speaking and do not have a sponsor for the tour.  We are selling our home and possessions to pay for this effort.   It is truly a labor of love!”

Since then she has educated more than 200,000 job seekers in libraries, schools, YMCAs, military bases, and houses of worship in 27 states how to stand out in a crowd.  Kohut launched her national Total Career Makeover contest in 2011, with the first one in New Jersey and the second one this past March in San Diego.  Kohut plans to do them in each city she travels to with Chicago being the next.    The winners receive a new look including a physical makeover, individual consulting sessions with Kohut and copies of Kohut’s books and teleseminars.

“We are delighted to welcome back Abby Kohut as she has wonderful advice for anyone seeking new employment,” added Bill Brewer, Ministry Director, CareerCare, St. Andrew UMC.  “It’s great to be a part of her North Texas Career Makeover contest as well.  We sincerely hope the community will take advantage of her being in town and join us for this helpful program.”

Kohut was rated by Fast Company magazine as one of the Top 100 Influential People Online and was one of the “Monster 11” according to Monster.com in 2011.  She has been highlighted as a job search expert on Fox 5, NBC, CBS, ABC, LinkedIn, Monster, Real Simple, The Ladders, Bloomberg Radio, and now Forbes. She is also the author of “Absolutely Abby’s 101 Job Search Secrets.”

Event is free and no reservations are required.  Entrance will be on east side of the church directly off of Mira Vista.  Park in the north parking lot and enter the double doors facing the north lot.  For more information, visit the CareerCare Website at http://www.standrewumc.org/connect/ministries/learning/career-care/ or call the church office at 214-291-8082.

Abby Kohut of AbsolutelyAbby.com, one of Forbes.com's "Top 100 Websites for Your Career" to speak at St. Andrew UMC April 28 - free

NATIONALLY KNOWN ABBY KOHUT TO SPEAK ON “SECRETS RECRUITERS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW” AT ST. ANDREW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S CAREERCARE MEETING –

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Kohut is known for her website AbsolutelyAbby.com, which was selected as one of Forbes.com’s

“Top 100 Websites for Your Career” in 2013

St. Andrew United Methodist Church invites the public to come hear Abby Kohut speak on “Secrets Recruiters Don’t Want You to Know,” on Monday, April 28, from 7 p.m. –

9 p.m., as part of the Career Care program, in St. Andrew’s Festival Hall, 5801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano, Texas.  Kohut is widely known for her website AbsolutelyAbby.com, which was selected as one of Forbes.com’s  “Top 100 Websites for Your Career” in 2013. The site tells candidates the absolute truth about the job search process – secrets that other recruiters do not share.

“During Kahout’s presentation, attendees will gain insight into what HR recruiters look for when evaluating qualifications,” said Bill Brewer, Ministry Director, CareerCare, St. Andrew UMC.  “Kahout has spoken to our group before, and when we heard she was going to be in Dallas, we were thrilled to schedule her a second time.  We saw this as something that could be helpful to the broader community so we have secured a larger room at the church and opened it up to the public at no charge.  This will, without a doubt, be a great program, and we hope a lot of people can join us.”

“In 2014, job seekers must do more than applying on job boards,” said Kahout.  “There are far more candidates applying for the same positions so you have to differentiate yourself.  I will share what to write in your cover letter, why keywords really matter and how to choose them, secrets about thank you letters, and what to say during a phone screen to get a ‘yes.’  Understanding how to master each of these job search components is the key to your success in 2014.”

Kohut and her husband and business manager, Ken, ditched their home and possessions in New Jersey to embark on an 8,000-mile trek across America to reach and teach one million jobseekers how to stand out in a crowd of more than 14 million unemployed.   Having once recruited over 800 teachers in 90 days for Kaplan Educational Centers, Kohut tells all of her recruiter secrets on her blog, which also includes articles as well as radio and television clips. She is credited with recruiting more than 10,000 people in the past 18 years.

“Abby humanized the role of a recruiter that is painted as insensitive and process-driven,” said Sheila Reed of Pensacola, Florida. “The information she shared was simple, straight-forward and practical.”

Kohut exposes secrets on how more than 150,000 recruiters use LinkedIn to find candidates, and teaches jobseekers LinkedIn features most users have no clue about. There are more than four million jobs available out there, and Kohut is determined to teach the unemployed how to use LinkedIn to connect with them.

Absolutely Abby is on a crusade to tell the truth – the Absolute Truth – about the most effective ways to get employed sharing her secrets on what recruiters know and won’t tell candidates.

“We hope the community will take advantage of this unique opportunity and come learn from Kahout’s wisdom,” added Brewer.

One of our greatest needs is for donations of shoes, handbags, wraps and jewelry,” added organizer Jane Marshall.  “Those items truly make the whole thing pop, and the girls are so excited to leave St. Andrew with their complete look for prom!”

Prom closet organizers and volunteers confirm that not only is the need great, but the impact the dress makes on the girl and her family is immeasurable.

“We want anyone out there who has donated a dress or accessories, or who can do so this year, to know what a difference it can make,” added organizer Jane Marshall.  “We anticipate another exciting year for the Prom Closet.”
