A school wide competition for the best drawing depicting the 2014-2015 "Stay Cool" school theme was won by Jenna Bowen. The winning drawing became the official picture on Hyer's "Bike Rodeo" t-shirt.  The t-shirt was then worn by the entire Hyer student body at their annual "Bike Rodeo and Family Picnic", which took place this past Friday.  "Bicycles Plus" generously gifted a brand new bike to this years Hyer Elementary winner. Below is a picture of Jenna wearing her winning t-shirt drawing and showing off her brand new "Bicycles Plus" bike.

Today, Hyer students kicked off “Bike Safety” week with a lesson and a show from the United Freestyle Stunt Team.  It was an exciting and informative event.  Bike safety week will culminate this Friday with a “Bike Rodeo” at the school.  Practice courses will be set up for students in 1st-4th grades, to show off all the knowledge they’ve acquired about bike safety through out the week.

Gail Holt, Hyer's science teacher, uses her furry and not so furry friends to help teach her classroom lessons.  Here, in these photos, Mrs. Holt is teaching the kids about animal classification.  Mrs. Holt believes this hands on approach helps keep the children's attention and enhances their retention.  The science lab is home to many wonderful creatures; a blue skink, a baby squirrel, a chinchilla, a bunny, several chickens, a snake, a turtle, fish and and even a tarantula.

Robert S. Hyer Elementary will definitely be seeing a lot of Papa John's Pizzeria this year.  The orgization that is big on giving back to the communities they serve,  donated 20% of all the profits they made last night, Thursday, 8/28, to Hyer Elementary.  They call it "Dough for Dollars" and hopefully Papa John's will host at least one more this year.
