Spring Break is a great time to help your child practice conversation skills. Let your child ask the server for condiments. Allow them to approach adults to ask for extra towels at the pool or the location of the restroom. These small steps help them to learn self-confidence and how to take initiative in talking with others.
Give older children the chance to handle more difficult messages, like telling the server if an order is incorrect or calling the front desk if something is missing in the room. These are “safe” opportunities for children to learn to politely deliver potentially uncomfortable messages.
Speech and language skills can be developed in all kinds of situations, not just in talking with your children.
