The Collin County Soil & Water Conservation District is currently taking orders for conservation tree and shrub seedlings. The purpose of this program is to assist farmers, ranchers & landowners with conservation practices such as windbreaks, noise and site barriers, erosion control and water conservation.  Several varieties of evergreen and hardwood trees are being offered this year. 

The plastic tube container species available include Afghanistan Pine, Austrian Pine, Buttonbush, Desert Willow, Honeylocust (thornless), Italian Stone Pine, Loblolly Pine, Oriental Arborvitae, Osage Orange, Retama, and Texas Ash.  These containerized species are sold in bundles of 25 for $130.00, plus sales tax, and have a top growth of 6-12 inches.

D-40 container species available include Loblolly Pine and Pecan . These seedling species are sold in bundles of 10 for $80, plus sales tax, and have a top growth of 18-24 inches.

All species being offered are tolerable to USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8, which includes North Texas and all of Collin County, and are provided by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Conservation tree order forms are available at the SWCD office, 1404 N. McDonald Street, Suite 100, McKinney, TX, or you can request a form via email at Jilane.Carper@tx.nacdnet.net  Tree orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis in case of depletion of inventory.  Supplies of some species are limited, so order early for a better opportunity of having your order filled.  All orders must be received by Wednesday, February 18, 2026.  The District promotes the tree seedling sale program solely to encourage conservation.  Tree seedlings purchased from the District are NOT for resale.  Orders will be ready for pick up on or around the week of February 26, 2026.  A reminder email will be sent with pick-up day and time information once it has been confirmed.  If you have any questions or would like more information about the program, please call 972-542-0081 ext. 3.  All proceeds from these sales help fund the SWCD’s conservation and education programs throughout Collin County.

Drs. Feng Tao and Lily T. Garcìa, dean

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas recently presented faculty awards to Drs. Feng Tao, Rashmi Hegde and Janna Burnett. The awards are bestowed upon those who demonstrate strong leadership, professionalism, and a commitment to educating dental students, dental hygiene students, graduate students and specialists. 

Each winner was nominated by the faculty. Awards were given Dec. 17 at George W. Bush Presidential Library during the A&M Dentistry annual faculty retreat. 

“Our mission is to advance excellence in education, leadership and service, and Drs. Tao, Hegde and Burnett embody all three,” said Dr. Lily T. Garcìa, A&M Dentistry dean. “Their dedication to teaching and mentoring students strengthens our academic community and advances the future of dentistry.” 

Tao, professor and associate department head in biomedical sciences, is an internationally recognized specialist in pain management and neuroscience. He received A&M Dentistry’s Premier Performance Award in Service for 2025 for his leadership and service at every level – departmental, college, university and beyond.  

Tao is the chair of A&M Dentistry’s College Research Committee and the Seminar Planning Committee. Outside of A&M Dentistry, He’s an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Pain Research Consortium and served on the United States Association for the Study of Pain’s awards committee. 

“He has secured over $7 million in research funding, published extensively, served on editorial boards and National Institutes of Health study sessions,” said Maureen Brown, clinical assistant professor and interim executive director of the dental hygiene program. “His mentorship has shaped future leaders in science, and his commitment to service and excellence makes him truly deserving of this award.” 

Brown is chair of the Faculty Development Committee’s awards subcommittee. 

“I am honored to be the recipient of the Premier Performance Award in Service,” Tao said. “Since I joined our school in 2014, I have been actively participating in different professional service activities at national and international levels.” 

Hegde, clinical assistant professor in periodontics, received A&M Dentistry’s Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award. She was recognized for her ability to bridge classroom learning to clinical practice, an approachable, interactive teaching style, and a commitment to student success. Hegde instills professionalism and confidence in students. 

“(Her) dedication and clinical expertise make her an outstanding role model and educator,” Brown said.  

Hegde said she’s appreciative that her hard work and dedication were acknowledged. 

“It is indeed a privilege to be a part of a school that values its faculty members,” she said. “I look forward to continuing my journey with greater enthusiasm and motivation.”  

Burnett, clinical associate professor in comprehensive dentistry, received the Teaching Excellence Award for mentoring faculty and students and for serving as a positive role model and strong advocate for student wellness. Her efforts are instrumental in making A&M Dentistry’s Mothers’ Rooms and the Pocket Pantry successful. 

“Her commitment to innovation, professionalism and student success has earned her perfect peer-review scores and exceptional student feedback,” Brown said. 

Teaching and mentoring dental students are among the most rewarding aspects of her career, Burnett said. 

“I am also deeply grateful to the faculty who trained and mentored me and modeled the kind of thoughtful, student-centered teaching I strive to provide,” she said.

The Stewpot's 18th annual Soup’s On Luncheon and Art Show, presented by H-E-B/Central Market, returns to Thompson Dallas on Monday, February 2, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. With philanthropy at the heart of her mission, Hailee continues to use her platform to uplift and inspire the next generation.

The Dallas PULSE, extended their winning streak (3-1) in a road victory against the Orlando Valkyries (3-2) during a five-set thriller, 3-2 (24-26, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-9), at Addition Financial Arena in Orlando on Sunday.

Dallas Pulse outside hitter Mimi Colyer led all scorers with 22 points, tallying 21 kills on 45 swings. Opposite hitter Kelsie Payne added 15 kills on 32 attempts and four blocks. Player of the Game went to Kaylee Cox, who provided a spark off the bench with 13 kills on 30 swings. Dallas finished with a season-high 73 kills and 13 blocks.

“The best part about today’s game was the full team effort,” said Dallas PULSE Head Coach Shannon Winzer. “Our serving subs, Geli Cyr and Isabel Martin, hit key serves in crucial moments, and we continue to show the depth of talent in this team with Malaya Jones getting two key points late in the fourth set and Kaylee Cox coming in the third to make an immediate impact offensively. Every game, we want to improve on the last, and so far, we are doing just that. We are also showing the character of this team and what we are building in Dallas. Never count us out.” 

For Orlando, opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie recorded a double-double with 17 kills on 40 swings and 11 digs. Outside hitter Charitie Luper chipped in nine kills on 26 attempts.

Orlando struck first in the opening set and maintained the edge. Dallas clawed back to even the score at 24-24 behind six kills from Payne and five from Colyer. A successful block-touch challenge swung momentum back to the Valkyries, and late breakdowns in serve-receive allowed a kill from Abercrombie and an ace from Maddux to seal the 26-24 set. While Payne and Colyer powered the Pulse offense, Orlando spread production across six players with at least one kill.

The second set followed a similar script, with the teams deadlocked at 21-21 before Orlando closed on a 4-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.

Dallas flipped the match in set three. Cox came off the bench for the Pulse and immediately made an impact, posting five kills on nine swings without an error. An error by Orlando gave Dallas a 20-14 cushion, capped by a 3-0 solo run from Payne to make it 23-14. Another error returned the ball to Orlando, but a kill from middle blocker Tristin Savage gave the ball back to Dallas. Luper added one final kill for the Valkyries before Payne closed the frame with a kill, 25-16.

With Colyer serving in the fourth set, Dallas surged early behind a 4-0 run fueled by Cox, who finished the set with six kills. Pulse middle blocker Layne Van Buskirk hit .600 in the frame, and improved defensive play helped Dallas edge Orlando, 25-23, forcing a decisive fifth set.

Orlando grabbed an early lead in the final frame before Dallas evened the score at 6-6. The Pulse then erupted on a 9-3 run to secure the five-set upset over the reigning Major League Volleyball champions, 15-9.

Dallas PULSE will remain on the road for a matchup against the Columbus Fury on Thursday, January 29, with a 6:00 p.m. CT start at Nationwide Arena. Fans can watch live on YouTube.

Dallas returns home Thursday, February 5, to host the Omaha Supernovas at Comerica Center in Frisco at 7:00 PM CT.

Dallas PULSE Victory Photo over Atlanta Vibe

The Dallas PULSE (2-1) earned their first-ever road victory Thursday, Jan. 22, outlasting the Atlanta Vibe (2-3) in a five-set match, 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9), at Gas South Arena in Atlanta.

Dallas PULSE outside hitter and the 2026 MLV first overall draft pick, Mimi Colyer, led all scorers with 24 kills (26 points) on 58 swings. Outside hitter Sofia Maldonado Diaz added 17 kills on 45 attempts. Major League Volleyball’s leading middle blockers, Tristin Savage and Layne Van Buskirk, recorded eight and five kills, respectively. The PULSE finished with 12 total blocks, marking their third straight match with double-digit blocks.

For Atlanta, outside hitter Leah Edmond led the Vibe with 20 kills on 47 swings and posted a double-double with 13 digs. Opposite hitter Aiko Jones contributed 15 kills and nine digs.

Dallas opened with the first point, but Atlanta quickly responded and controlled much of the opening set behind Edmond, who tallied eight kills on 14 swings. The PULSE battled back to tie the set at 20-all, but a late 5-0 run propelled the Vibe to a 25-20 first-set win.

The second set featured tight back-and-forth play, with the score knotted 12 times. Colyer provided the spark for Dallas, recording eight kills on 14 attempts to push the PULSE to a 25-22 set victory and even the match.

Momentum shifted again in the third set as three consecutive kills from Dallas, one by Maldonado Diaz and two from middle blocker Van Buskirk, gave the PULSE a late edge. Atlanta Vibe opposite hitter Aiko Jones sealed the set at 25-23 after a service error, despite Maldonado Diaz delivering two late points, including an ace, to pull Dallas within one.

Dallas responded in the fourth, breaking a 4-4 tie and holding the lead the rest of the way. PULSE outside hitter Kaylee Cox fueled a key 4-0 run from the service line, extending the PULSE’s advantage to 23-16. Atlanta cut the deficit to three, and a kill from Jones put the Vibe at 20, but back-to-back Vibe errors closed the set, 25-20, and sent the match to a fifth.

In the final frame, Dallas erased two early three-point deficits before tying the score at 7-7. After Atlanta regained a brief two-point lead, Maldonado Diaz notched her 16th kill of the night to pull the PULSE within one. With Cox back at the baseline, Dallas closed the match on a strong run to secure the 15-9 win and a 3-2 victory.

Dallas PULSE will continue their road series Sunday, January 25, with a 2:00 p.m. CT matchup against the Orlando Valkyries at Addition Financial Arena. Fans can watch live on YouTube.

Dallas returns home Thursday, February 5, to host the Omaha Supernovas at Comerica Center in Frisco at 7:00 PM CT.

The Preservation Park Cities Distinguished Speaker Luncheon presented by Highland Park Village featured Brent Hull, an award-winning builder and expert in historically accurate architectural millwork and moldings, as the keynote speaker on the topic “Texas Preservation.”
         
Chaired by Lauren Cooper and Porter Fuqua with Jan and Bruce Harbour as honorary chairs and Jason Morski as president, the reception began with guests enjoying passed hors d’oeuvres and wine, along with a VIP reception and book signing.

        
Jason began by welcoming everyone saying that Preservation Park Cities mission is to preserve and promote the history, architecture, aesthetics, and cultural traditions of the Park Cities.  He also shared insight into his own experience owning and carefully renovating an historic home, his was built in the 1800s, saying “Old is gold!” to a rousing round of applause. He gave insight into upcoming events, including the Historic Home Tour in May 2026 and the Park Cities Car Show in April 2026.
        
After the chairs thanked sponsors, including D Home as magazine sponsor, Brent presented a very interesting slideshow and spoke about how to build better and more beautifully. From the history of housing from post-war in 1946 when the focus was on supplies to the cookie-cutter homes of the 1950s, then through the housing crisis, modern houses and how construction has changed through the years. Focusing on historic buildings, he said that’s what ties the community together, the history of our homes, saying that when we save these buildings, we save who we are.

Brent Hullis an award-winning master builder and expert in historically accurate architectural millwork and moldings. For over thirty years his craftsmanship has enhanced nationally registered properties and homes across the country. Hull honed his expertise at Boston’s North Bennet Street School where he trained in the art of traditional building and historic preservation prior to founding Hull Millwork & Hull Homes in Fort Worth, Texas. When Brent is not working with his teams, speaking or consulting about how to build better and more beautifully, he enjoys reading and writing about historic architecture. He has authored five books on historic millwork; his most recent book released this spring, Millwork: The Design and Manufacturing of Historic Millwork from 1740-1950.

 

Overview:

  • The Historic Home Tour, Distinguished Speaker Luncheon and the Park Cities Car Show are the organization’s only fundraisers each year. The proceeds are allocated to help further our mission to celebrate and promote the preservation of Park Cities architecture, history, aesthetics, and cultural traditions.
  • The purpose of the annual Historic Home Tour is to showcase architecturally and historically significant homes of the Park Cities and illustrate how these homes have been restored or remodeled to serve the lifestyle needs of families today.
  • The organization landmarks architecturally and historically significant homes in the Park Cities, some of which are on the Historic Home Tour.
  • Members of the organization enjoy historic and preservation oriented educational programs.

 

Preservation Park Cities Mission:
Preservation Park Cities mission is to preserve and promote the history, architecture, aesthetics, and cultural traditions of the Park Cities. Proceeds of the Distinguished Speaker Luncheon, Historic Home Tour and the Classic and Antique Car Show will be used to fund:

  • Property Landmarking
  • Stewardship of the PPC archives at the UP Library
  • HPISD Architecture/History Student Scholarship Award
  • The Distinguished Chair for History at HPHS
  • The “Save the Top 100” campaign and the new book: The Houses of the Park Cities: An Architectural Guide to the Historic Houses of Highland Park and University Park Texas
