Accents walls aren’t just about paint…We always say, “In interior design, every room deserves a great focal point.” One of the best ways to achieve this is by highlighting an accent wall with a different finish. While paint is often the go-to for drawing attention to a key area—thanks to its budget-friendly appeal—there are plenty of more elevated options to consider when you want something truly unique. Here are a few of our favorites…

Wallpaper

A classic…this has been around for decades and NEVER goes out of style…IF it’s the right paper!  A great wallpaper can add depth, texture and loads of energy to a room just by hanging there. ???? Consider bolder colors, large-scale patterns or unique graphics to pack a punch. Conversely, soothing grass cloths in soft hues, understated linen textures, neutral-colored metallic cork or an abaca silk woven fabric on paper for a subtle shimmer…oooh! Now, we’re talking!! Accent a wall, a few walls, backs of bookcases or even a ceiling. We know no limits here!!

Wood

Many of you will easily recall using wood paneling or molding to detail a room, and in some cases, this classic approach still works well. Have you explored the various wood sheeting designs that capture the essence of the modern or mid-century modern looks? We love a textured wood design on a wall to give rich depth and texture without distracting the eye or overwhelming the space. For maximum impact, consider staining or painting a reeded wood veneer to match the same finish as the surrounding walls or cabinetry.

Tile

Never underestimate the power of a great tile to transform the entire mood of a room. Large-scale tiles are ideal for covering expansive spaces, while smaller mosaic designs can be stunning in more intimate areas. With endless options, the results can be truly breathtaking. Natural stone and porcelain are both excellent choices, and for an extra-large impact without the weight of stone, consider porcelain slabs to achieve maximum effect.

Decorative Paint

Faux finishes and decorative paint techniques have evolved far beyond their 90s origins, now offering endless possibilities. We’ve mastered linen crosshatch textures with graphic prints, mother-of-pearl or Swarovski crystal-embossed surfaces and even mica chips embedded in metallic paint for a touch of glamorous flair. High gloss, pearlized or metallic paint on ceilings and trim can create striking contrasts that bring your walls to life in unexpected ways.
