Note: This article was originally published in 2017 and updated in September 2025 to include four additional paint colors, bringing the list to 10 of our favorite grays for your home.

Timeless yet versatile, these expert-approved shades of gray bring depth, warmth, and elegance to today’s luxury homes.

Gray has long been a favorite in interior design for its versatility, sophistication and timeless appeal. Whether you’re creating a cozy retreat, a sleek modern space or a balanced backdrop for bold accents, gray offers endless possibilities. Originally, we highlighted six of our favorite grays — but with so many beautiful options now available, we’ve expanded the list to 10 stunning shades that can transform your home in 2025 and beyond.

Cool Gray

  • Benjamin Moore Horizon: A pale gray with a subtle blue-green cast that pairs beautifully with crisp whites and marble surfaces. Perfect for serene bathrooms or kitchens where clarity and light are priorities.
  • Benjamin Moore Wickham Gray: A clean, medium-tone gray without beige undertones. Ideal for spaces with abundant natural light, especially south-facing rooms where it remains balanced and luminous.
  • Benjamin Moore Gray Pinstripe: A rich, masculine gray with blue undertones. Its depth makes it a striking choice for studies, bedrooms, or accent walls where drama is welcome.
  • Sherwin-Williams Cityscape – A soft, cool-toned charcoal that reads sleek and modern—excellent as a minimalist backdrop that allows decor and art to pop.

Warm Gray

  • Sherwin Williams City Loft: A soft taupe-gray that gently warms up a space. Particularly effective in north-facing rooms that need a touch of brightness and comfort.
  • Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray: A versatile greige that blends seamlessly with other neutrals. Its medium depth makes it a go-to for living areas and open-concept spaces, anchoring the design without overpowering it.
  • Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray: A sophisticated, deep gray with warmth. Stunning on walls, cabinetry, or even interior doors when a bold yet timeless statement is desired.

Deep and Moody Grays

  • Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal – A classic, balanced deep gray with a touch of warmth—ideal for both traditional and contemporary interiors—offered a timeless foundation across many projects.
  • Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn – A beloved deep charcoal revered for its ability to shift subtly between cool and warm tones depending on the light, making it outstanding for feature walls or cozy abstractions.
  • Benjamin Moore Gravel Gray – A modern dark gray with subtle blue undertones—versatile and calming, perfect for bedrooms, offices, or spaces seeking a contemporary neutral with depth.

Designer Tips for Selecting the Perfect Gray

Lighting transforms color more than any other element. Always sample paint in your own space before making a final decision. I recommend painting a large foam board with your chosen shade and moving it around the room to view it at different times of day. What feels crisp in morning light may read moody by evening—and that nuance is what makes gray so captivating.

For a truly refined result, balance gray with layered textures and complementary tones. Pair cool grays with polished nickel or marble for a clean, sophisticated effect, and warm grays with natural woods or soft textiles for inviting depth.

Ready to Elevate Your Home?

Choosing the perfect gray can feel overwhelming with so many beautiful options available. Our team at Nicole Arnold Interiors has the expertise to help you select shades that complement your home’s architecture, lighting and personal style. If you’re ready to transform your space with timeless design, contact us today to get started.

House-Hunting with a Designer’s Eye:
5 Tips for a Seamless Move-In

House-hunting is about more than finding the right address—it’s about imagining the life you’ll live inside those walls. Whether you’re moving across town or relocating from another state, the decisions you make before you buy will shape how your home looks, feels and functions for years to come. As a luxury interior designer specializing in both in-person and virtual interior design, I help clients plan for their dream home from the very first showing, making smart, beautiful and lasting choices—so when move-in day arrives, every detail feels intentional and perfectly you.

TIP #1: Look Past the Staging

Focus on architecture, light and layout—not the seller’s furniture. Capture measurements and quick videos so your designer can evaluate the home’s potential, even from afar and help you visualize the home’s potential.

Tip #2: Budget for Design

Factor in updates like flooring, lighting and built-ins from the start. Designing and implementing construction-related projects before move-in often saves time, money and stress, not to mention avoiding unnecessary disruption to your everyday life.

Tip #3: Define Your Priorities

Pinpoint the rooms or features most important to you—whether it’s a chef’s kitchen, statement foyer or functional home office. Discuss those with your designer to ensure the home will lend itself to your goals and start making plans to bring those dreams to fruition.

Tip #4: Plan from Anywhere

Our Relocation Interior Design services let you start designing your Texas home before you arrive. We manage everything—from virtual consultations to full-service furnishings and construction design, procurement, installations and on-site oversight—so it’s ready the day you move in. We even arrange for the home-related services you may not have already arranged: house cleaners, landscapers, organizers and more!

Tip #5: Phase Your Timeline

Luxury design takes time and planning ahead is EVERYTHING!! While we can design all phases at once, if you’re not able to take on the entire project altogether, you’ll want to consider essentials before move-in (particularly any construction, paint or other “messy” updates), core furnishings next and finishing touches last for a more manageable transformation.

The Result: A Home That Feels Like You—From Day One

When design and house-hunting work hand-in-hand, you’re not just buying square footage—you’re investing in a home that’s tailored to your lifestyle and aspirations. Whether we’re walking through properties together in person or collaborating virtually from miles away, my role is to ensure that when you cross the threshold for the very first time, it already feels like home.

Ready to start collaborating? Contact us today and let’s get dreaming up that new home together!

Need help understanding your design style? We’re here to guide you through the process, ensuring your home uniquely represents your personality and lifestyle. Here are some of the most common interior design styles that will enable you to begin defining your style as you embark on your interior design project.

Traditional spaces, at their foundation, embrace structure, symmetry, and a sense of refinement. Rich woods, elegant moldings, and timeless furniture silhouettes create balance and permanence. Classic patterns such as damask, florals, plaid, and houndstooth, paired with sumptuous fabrics like velvet or silk, add depth and sophistication. Layered draperies, polished metals, and curated accessories—gilded frames, crystal lighting, and heirloom rugs—complete the look, resulting in interiors that feel warm, welcoming and enduring.

Refined Rustic Interior Design

Refined Rustic design blends natural character with an elevated sense of polish. The style relies on a clean aesthetic and a neutral palette, striking harmony between masculine and feminine notes. Layered textures—soft wools, supple leathers, and hides—introduce warmth, while varied wood finishes, stone, and other organic elements ground the space in nature. Thoughtful detailing and cozy accents refine the look, creating interiors that feel both sophisticated and inviting.

Coastal Interior Design

Coastal style evokes the ease of a seaside retreat with its soft, cool color palette that naturally brightens a space. Light woods, woven textures (think rattan and rush seats) and breezy fabrics create a casual, inviting atmosphere, while simple furniture frames and natural surfaces keep the look approachable. The result is an interior that feels open, airy, and refreshed—bringing the best elements of a coastal getaway right into the home.

Transitional design blends traditional elegance with modern simplicity, creating a look that is timeless, yet fresh. Classic forms are updated with clean lines, refined finishes and subtle geometric details. A neutral palette establishes a calm foundation, while carefully placed pops of color add interest without overwhelming the design. The result is a harmonious balance—rooted in tradition, streamlined for today, and layered with depth and sophistication.

Modern Interior Design

Modern design is rooted in simplicity and function, with a strong emphasis on clean lines and open space. Neutral foundations—often white, black, and natural wood—set the stage for a minimalist look that feels fresh and uncluttered. Furniture is low-profile with crisp, geometric forms, while materials such as glass, steel, and concrete highlight the style’s streamlined character. Accents are purposeful and restrained, utilizing either vibrant colors or monochromatic neutrals, ensuring the focus remains on form, balance, and a seamless sense of flow.

Mid-Century Modern Design

Mid-Century Modern incorporates iconic pieces from the 1950s and 1960s that remain timeless today—think Mad Men reimagined for modern living. Defined by warm woods, clean lines, and a pared-down aesthetic, this style embodies the principle of “less is more.” Furniture frames draw inspiration from architecture, showcasing geometric forms and sculptural silhouettes. The result is a minimal yet inviting look that feels both retro and enduringly relevant.

Eclectic style is fully curated, layering bold colors, varied patterns, and pieces drawn from multiple design traditions. While it pulls from many influences, the key is balance—each element is chosen with intention so the overall look feels cohesive rather than chaotic. This approach often results in the most visually engaging spaces, filled with depth, personality and interest—perfect for those who prefer not to commit to a single design style.

This room was once used as the son’s gaming room, now it’s a dining room with a purpose.

Our intentional residential interior designs not only reflect how our clients live but also provide strong emotional connections to their spaces.

Ever walk into a space and it just feels good…?

Luxury interior design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about how a space makes you feel. A thoughtfully designed home can ground you, energize you, soothe you and even elevate your sense of purpose. At our firm, we create spaces that do more than function beautifully; they resonate—deeply and personally—with the lives of those who live in them.

Designing for well-being requires an understanding of lifestyle, emotion and experience. Here are three of our recent projects that demonstrate how our designs created rooms that foster comfort, connection and creativity.

The Home That Hosts the Heart of the Family

One of our clients came to us with a beautiful intention: to design a home that could accommodate the couple day to day as well as welcome their large extended family with relaxed refinement. We created a layout where the kitchen, dining room and family room flowed organically—each space unique in its own right, yet designed to be open, inviting and interconnected.

Multiple custom seating zones, a large kitchen island, a functional bar and thoughtfully layered textures make these rooms feel simultaneously grand and cozy. Sound-absorbing materials and soft tonal palettes reduced sensory fatigue, so family gatherings could feel lively but never overwhelming.

The result? A home that didn’t just house family—it embraced them. This space now hosts everything from Sunday suppers to milestone celebrations, each one a testament to how design can foster togetherness and a deep sense of belonging.

The Bourbon Lounge: A Sanctuary of Sophistication and Serenity

For another client, joy came in the form of a private retreat—a bourbon lounge tailored for moments of personal indulgence and reflection. We transformed an unused room into an immersive, masculine sanctuary where refined comfort meets sensory richness.

The vibe is moody and mysterious, and the finishes are highly sophisticated. The extensive bourbon collection deserved all the best highlights, including custom bistro shelving, ambient lighting and both beautiful and functional cabinetry. Every detail, down to the knurled cabinet hardware and bar faucet, the hammered nickel sink, the metal mesh-clad cabinet fronts and specifically commissioned artwork, was chosen with the client’s affinities in mind. Cork metallic wallpaper, cozy seating, deep-hued paint and the mesmerizing quartzite countertops all culminate into this long-awaited dream come true.

Here, our client finds space to unwind, sip bourbon, savor fine wines and enjoy a smooth cigar with intention.

A Whimsical Chapter of Joyful Renewal

Our designs are also about celebration—marking life’s transitions with spaces that feel emotionally aligned to new beginnings. One of our favorite projects was for a long-time client entering a fresh season of life, who wanted her space to reflect optimism, energy and creativity.

We brought that vision to life with a playful mix of bright, joyful colors, unexpected textures and curated artwork that spoke to her personal journey. Every corner of the home was designed to spark delight—from vibrant accent walls and jewel-toned upholstery to unique lighting that added a sense of artistry and charm. The study features elegant wallpaper in blush-toned swirls that bring a quiet sense of sophistication and a touch of soft glam. Just down the hall, the media room takes on a cozier vibe with rich, moody hues designed for ultimate relaxation after a long day.

The space has become a reflection of her inner joy, designed not just to be lived in, but to inspire—daily. In this case, the design represents her self-expression and empowerment. She says she has to pinch herself sometimes to remember that this is all real.

How Does Your Home Feel?

Each of these projects illustrates an important point: interior design has the power to transform how we feel every day. Whether it’s fostering connection, encouraging rest, or igniting joy, well-considered design supports the way we live—and the way we want to feel.

If you’re ready to enjoy a space that not only looks good, but truly feels good, we’d love to help you bring that vision to life! Contact Nicole Arnold Interiors today! (214) 326-1160

At our studio, every project begins with a conversation. We take the time to truly understand how you live, what you value and how you want to feel in your home. It’s through this in-depth discovery process—and our commitment to truly listening—that we’re able to design interiors that reflect not only your taste, but your lifestyle.

Custom furnishings are an extension of that philosophy. They allow us to translate your unique preferences and needs into pieces that are as functional as they are beautiful. When each element is created specifically for you, the result is a home that feels deeply personal, effortlessly livable and entirely one-of-a-kind.

Designed Around You

No two clients are alike—and neither are their homes. Some need custom storage solutions that keep daily life running smoothly. Others dream of a showstopping piece that anchors an open-concept space. Through thoughtful conversations and careful observation, we design custom home furnishings that solve real challenges while enhancing the rhythm of your day-to-day life.

Custom design gives us the freedom to respond precisely to your space—its architecture, its light, its energy—and to the way you move through it. The result isn’t just better aesthetics. It’s better living.

The Craft of Quality

We partner with exceptional artisans who share our passion for precision, craftsmanship and beauty in every detail. From custom wood finishes and hand-applied stains to tailored upholstery and one-of-a-kind hardware, our custom pieces are made with care and intention—just like your home.

Because these furnishings are built to your specifications using the highest-quality materials, they’re not only stunning but enduring. This is craftsmanship you can see, feel and appreciate every day.

Meaningful Function, Lasting Beauty

During the design process, we ask the right questions and listen closely to the answers. Do you entertain often? Need a work surface that blends seamlessly into your living space? Want a bed designed to accommodate your nightly reading ritual? We design with those details in mind.

By aligning custom-made furnishings with your lifestyle, we make sure your home works hard for you—without ever compromising on beauty.

A Cohesive, Collected Home

Custom pieces allow us to tie your entire home together with thoughtful continuity. Materials, scale and finishes are chosen not in isolation, but in harmony with the broader vision. Your interiors become more than a collection of rooms—they become a curated reflection of your personality, your habits and your aspirations.

A Personalized Investment in Your Everyday

When you choose custom design, you’re investing in furniture that won’t be found in any showroom, made with you—and only you—in mind. It’s an investment in originality, quality and a lifestyle that’s intentionally designed.

We believe your home should feel like it was made just for you. Because it was.

Let’s Create Something Tailored to You

If you’re ready to experience the ease, elegance, and intention of a home designed around you, we’d love to start the conversation. Let’s bring your vision to life—with furnishings as distinctive as your lifestyle. Contact Nicole Arnold Interiors today! (214) 326-1160

3. Design Concept & Mood Boards

Next, we create customized digital mood boards that reflect your preferences in color, style, texture and function. These boards allow you to visualize the ambiance of each space, from serene bedrooms to elegant living areas.

Each year, the Pantone Color of the Year sets the tone for design inspiration across fashion, beauty and interiors. For 2025, Mocha Mousse has taken the crown—and it’s no surprise. This earthy, refined neutral bridges warmth and sophistication, offering endless design opportunities in both traditional and contemporary spaces.

As a luxury interior designer, I see Mocha Mousse as a foundational hue that brings calm and complexity to a room. It’s soft yet statement-making, especially when paired with high-contrast or tonal palettes. Here are three elevated design themes that incorporate Mocha Mousse in ways that feel both current and dramatic:

1. Moody & Masculine

Paired with Navy, Black, or Charcoal

For a dramatic and layered look, Mocha Mousse becomes the perfect counterpoint to deeper tones like navy blue, matte black or charcoal gray. Think velvet drapes in deep navy paired with a Mocha Mousse upholstered bench, or a smoky black kitchen accented with warm mocha cabinetry or casegoods. This combination exudes a high-end, cocoon-like ambiance that feels grounded and architectural.

Key Applications:

  • Mocha-toned velvet or suede upholstery against a navy or black backdrop
  • Drapery in rich textures to soften a charcoal-painted room
  • Casegoods with mocha wood finishes for added depth and warmth

2. Monochromatic & Minimal

Layered with Soft Neutrals

Mocha Mousse thrives in a tonal palette of beiges, taupes and warm ivories. This theme feels serene, curated and endlessly chic—especially in spaces that prioritize texture over color. A monochromatic living room with boucle-covered seating, a mocha area rug and brushed brass accents speaks to quiet luxury at its finest.

Key Applications:

  • Rugs in layered mocha and beige patterns
  • Window treatments that blend seamlessly with wall tones
  • Upholstery in varied textures—from linen to leather—all within a tight, tonal palette

3. Earthy & Elevated

Blending with Rich Terracottas, Olive, and Ochre

For clients drawn to warmth and organic textures, Mocha Mousse pairs beautifully with other earth tones. Think terracotta vases, olive green accents or ochre-hued throws—all set against a grounding mocha backdrop. This palette feels connected to nature while remaining refined, especially when layered with wood, stone and artisanal finishes.

Key Applications:

  • Upholstered dining chairs in a Mocha Mousse performance fabric, surrounded by olive green walls
  • Drapery in warm rust or ochre, anchored by mocha-stained wood furniture
  • A statement rug that weaves together mocha, clay, and sand tones

Whether you introduce Mocha Mousse through casegoods, textiles or architectural finishes, its adaptability allows it to transform a space—offering both comfort and elevated style. It’s not just a color trend—it’s a design essential for the year ahead.

Want to explore how Mocha Mousse can ground, highlight or transform your space? Call us, we’d love to guide you!

For most people, their investment in their home is one of their largest. When it comes to designing and adorning that home—ensuring it has all the features that make it personal, functional and uniquely theirs—the consensus is that hiring an interior design firm is a must. But are all created equal? We think not…

After meeting clients whose prior interior design experiences fell short of their expectations, we make it a priority to understand what went wrong. Common feedback includes: “The designer lacked a solid execution plan,” “Communication was poor,” and “There was no follow-through to achieve the promised result.” Once we undertake a project, clients are often amazed at their experience.

At Nicole Arnold Interiors, our commitment to client satisfaction is deeply rooted in our structured and proven interior design process. This meticulous approach ensures that each project not only meets but exceeds our clients’ expectations, resulting in spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Our Effective Interior Design Process

Consult

Our process begins with an on-site consultation, where our design team engages in a comprehensive discovery session to understand the client’s goals, preferences and lifestyle. This initial meeting allows clients to gain insight into our vision for their project and establishes a foundation of trust and mutual understanding. We gather all the necessary information to prepare a detailed proposal tailored to the client’s needs.

Design

In this phase, our team channels creativity and expertise to curate designs that align with the client’s objectives. We source materials, prepare detailed drawings and develop customized solutions, culminating in a professional presentation. This collaborative review ensures that our designs resonate with the client’s vision, setting the stage for a successful implementation.

Implement

Upon client approval, we manage all aspects of procurement and logistics, ensuring seamless execution of the design plan. Our meticulous attention to detail during this phase guarantees that the final delivery and installation are executed flawlessly, allowing clients to relax while we bring their vision to life.

The culmination of our process is a transformative installation that leaves clients delighted with their new spaces. Beyond the aesthetic and functional enhancements, clients appreciate the smooth and successful experience throughout the project, resulting in spaces they will enjoy for years to come.

By adhering to this structured process, Nicole Arnold Interiors ensures that each project is executed with precision and care, leading to outcomes that consistently satisfy and often surpass client expectations.

Recent Client Praise

Working with Nicole and her team was wonderful! The level of communication, professionalism and follow through from beginning to end was extraordinary and the entire experience exceeded our expectations.

When we first met Nicole, we knew we wanted to elevate our home but did not have a specific plan in mind. However, she expertly listened to us and then developed design plans which incorporated our thoughts and also included many WOW! elements we would never have conceived on our own! With her guidance, we were able to achieve everything we hoped for and without hesitation, wholeheartedly recommend Nicole Arnold Interiors!

Now, our only problem is missing Nicole and her team…I told my husband we might have to buy a new house!

Minimalist design is all about creating serene, purposeful spaces that focus on quality, simplicity and intentional living. Here are five key principles, along with a few practical tips, to help you embrace minimalism in your luxury interior design!

Quality Over Quantity

Choose fewer, high-quality pieces that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. Every item in the room should be carefully selected to create a curated, refined space.

Practical Tip: Invest in custom or high-end furniture that complements your lifestyle and has timeless appeal, ensuring each piece lasts and remains relevant.

Embrace Open Spaces

Use open, airy layouts that allow for negative space, creating a sense of freedom and tranquility. Spacious rooms and seamless transitions enhance a calm, expansive feel.

Practical Tip: Consider incorporating large windows or glass doors that allow natural light to flow through the space, making it feel even more expansive.

Neutral Color Palettes

Stick to neutral tones like whites, grays and soft earth hues to create a timeless, harmonious environment. Add subtle accents for personality, but keep the overall palette simple and balanced.

Practical Tip: Use textured fabrics in neutral tones (such as linen or wool) for added depth without overwhelming the space.

Functionality Meets Aesthetics

Focus on furniture and decor that blend beauty with utility. Hidden storage and functional design elements help maintain a clutter-free, streamlined look while remaining practical.

Practical Tip: Use multifunctional furniture, like storage ottomans or modular shelving, to minimize clutter without compromising on style.

Natural Materials & Personalization

Incorporate natural materials such as wood, stone and metal for warmth and timeless elegance. Add personal touches with carefully chosen art and decor that reflect your unique lifestyle, making the space meaningful and distinct.

Practical Tip: Choose natural stone for countertops or a signature marble feature to make a striking, lasting impression while maintaining simplicity.

If you’re ready to bring these minimalist principles to life in your home, we’re here to help! Contact us today to schedule a consultation and let our expert designers craft a space that reflects your vision, enhances your lifestyle and embraces purposeful elegance.

When considering interior design services, many clients wonder about the differences between retail interior design and working with an interior design firm. While both options can enhance a space, the level of customization, expertise and service varies significantly between the two.

Retail Interior Design:
A Budget-Friendly Approach

Retail interior design is often associated with furniture stores or large chain retailers offering design assistance to customers. While this option can be beneficial for those with a limited budget, it comes with certain restrictions:

  • Limited Product Selection: Retail designers work within their store’s inventory, meaning the choices for furniture, décor and finishes are constrained.
  • Time Constraints: Since retail designers often assist multiple customers simultaneously, they may be unable to dedicate extensive time to each project.
  • Varying Expertise Levels: Some retail designers have formal training, while others may be sales associates with a passion for design without extensive education or experience.
  • Best for Budget-Conscious Clients: If stretching dollars as far as possible is the priority, retail interior design can be a practical option as it’s typically complimentary.

Working with an Interior Design Firm:
A Tailored Experience

For clients seeking a high level of customization, attention to detail and a luxury experience, working with a private interior design firm is a better fit. Here’s why:

  • Expansive Resources: Private interior designers have access to hundreds of manufacturers and dealers, allowing them to source unique, high-quality materials at competitive prices.
  • Custom Creations: Unlike retail design, private firms collaborate with artisans to craft one-of-a-kind pieces that perfectly fit the client’s vision.
  • Personalized Service: Designers take the time to understand the client’s needs, style preferences and long-term goals, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious design.
  • Long-Term Relationships: Many clients return for future projects, whether furnishing a new home, redesigning an office or even working on second and third homes. This continuity eliminates the hassle of starting over with a new designer who lacks knowledge of past projects.

Seamless Transitions and Lasting Trust

One of the greatest advantages of working with a professional interior design firm is the ability and desire to build an ongoing relationship. With a deep understanding of a client’s taste, past projects and home layout, a private designer can effortlessly continue the design journey without missing a beat. This ensures consistency and saves clients from repeatedly explaining their preferences to new retail associates.

The Right Choice for You

Choosing between retail and private interior design depends on your needs, budget and expectations. Retail interior design may work if you’re looking for a quick, cost-effective solution. However, if you value a bespoke experience with limitless possibilities, a private design firm can elevate your space in ways that retail design simply cannot.

With over 16 years of experience, Nicole Arnold Interiors prides itself on offering personalized, high-end design services that stand the test of time. Our full-service interior design firm curates exceptional designs through a refined and proven process, creating client experiences that generate lifelong relationships and repeat referrals.

Whether starting a new construction project, renovating or simply refreshing your home, we are here to bring your vision to life with unmatched expertise and dedication.
