Seeking Texas-based women artists – from emerging to established – Texas Vignette today announced a call for entries for its sixth-annual Vignette Art Fair, which will take place Oct. 17-19, 2024, at Dallas Market Hall (2200 N Stemmons Fwy, Dallas, TX 75207). The three-day juried event features works exclusively by Texas women artists in an effort to promote exceptional yet under-represented regional talent. Vivian Li, the Lupe Murchison Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, will serve as curator for the 2024 Vignette Art Fair (see bio below). While the fair is free and open to the public Oct. 18-19, a VIP Benefit Preview will be held Oct. 17.

The call-for-entries opens Tuesday, July 2. The deadline is Aug. 2, and selected artists will be notified by Aug. 26. Submission fee is $36. For qualifications/rules, details and instructions, go to texasvignette.org.

The Vignette Art Fair is unique in that it is fully submission-based, curated in an exhibition-style setting, solely spotlights the work of women artists, and, most significantly, 100% of all sales go directly to the artists.

“Texas Vignette received a record number of artist entries last year, and we look forward to another great response this year with Vivian Li at the helm,” said Jessica Ingle, Texas Vignette founder and president. “Vivian has deep connections to the Texas art scene through her curatorial appointments with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Dallas Museum of Art and has long supported our mission to uplift dynamic female artists in a male dominated art world. We are thrilled to have her expertise for this year’s fair.”

Founded in 2017, Texas Vignette works to close the gender disparity gap as female artists are not represented nearly as often in museum exhibitions, acquisitions and galleries compared to their male counterparts. In fact, of the $196.6 billion spent at art auctions between 2008 and 2019, work produced by women accounted for only $4 billion, or around 2% of total sales.

"The Vignette Art Fair stands out for its transformative impact, not only in elevating female artists but also in cultivating a vibrant culture of collecting their work," said Vivian Li, curator of the 2024 Vignette Art Fair. "I am honored and excited to play a role in this year’s fair, eager to engage in enriching dialogues and weave together diverse perspectives and practices as part of a shared conversation across the state."

Participants must identify as a woman and be a current Texas resident. Submission requirements include an artist statement, bio, CV and a link to the artist’s website and/or Instagram handle.

Vignette Art Fair will be open with free admission Friday, Oct. 18, from noon-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. In addition, a limited number of tickets will be available for purchase to the VIP Benefit Preview on Oct. 17, from 6-10 p.m. The evening will feature live performance works, meet-and-greets with the artists and curator, music, and an open bar.

For more information, go to texasvignette.org.

Storms can wreak havoc on your roof. The long-term effects of storm damage on your roof can be concerning.

Storms can wreak havoc on your roof, causing immediate damage that is often visible right after the storm passes. However, the long-term effects of storm damage on your roof can be equally, if not more, concerning. Understanding these long-term effects is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your roof and ensuring the safety of your home.

1. Leakage and Water Damage

One of the most common long-term effects of storm damage on a roof is leakage. Even minor damage, such as missing shingles or cracked flashing, can allow water to seep into your home. Over time, this water intrusion can lead to extensive water damage, including rotting wood, mold growth, and compromised structural integrity. Addressing roof leaks promptly is essential to prevent costly repairs down the line.

2. Reduced Energy Efficiency

Storm damage can compromise the insulation of your roof, leading to reduced energy efficiency in your home. Gaps in the roof caused by storm damage can allow hot or cold air to escape, forcing your HVAC system to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. This increased energy consumption not only drives up your utility bills but also has a negative impact on the environment.

3. Structural Degradation

Over time, untreated storm damage can result in structural degradation of your roof. What may start as a small issue, like a loose shingle, can escalate into a more significant problem if left unaddressed. The structural integrity of your roof is vital for the overall stability of your home. Regular inspections and timely repairs can help prevent extensive damage and prolong the lifespan of your roof.

4. Aesthetic Deterioration

In addition to functional concerns, storm damage can also lead to aesthetic deterioration of your roof. Stained ceilings, peeling paint, and watermarks on walls are common signs of roof damage that can detract from the appearance of your home. Maintaining the exterior of your home, including the roof, not only preserves its curb appeal but also protects its value.

5. Safety Hazards

Perhaps the most critical long-term effect of storm damage on your roof is the potential safety hazards it poses. A compromised roof can collapse under the weight of heavy snow or strong winds, endangering the occupants of the home. Additionally, water leaks can create slippery surfaces and increase the risk of accidents. Prioritizing the repair and maintenance of your roof is essential for ensuring the safety of your household.

The long-term effects of storm damage on your roof extend far beyond the initial visible signs. From water damage and reduced energy efficiency to structural degradation and safety hazards, untreated roof damage can have serious consequences for your home. Regular inspections, prompt repairs, and proactive maintenance are key to mitigating these effects and preserving the integrity of your roof for years to come.

Shelton's Scholars program helps students with learning differences develop skills in oral and written spelling, reading, grammar, vocabulary, cursive handwriting, and auditory discrimination and memory.

By Angelo Piersanti

The Shelton School is a bustling place in the summer, hosting any number of training classes, enrichment opportunities, and academic courses. This includes our Scholars program for students with language-based learning differences who are 6 years of age and above. Students come from all over the metroplex with some families driving from over an hour away.

The Scholars program, part of Shelton’s Outreach Department, is designed for students from the community at large who for various reasons are not enrolled at Shelton. The program offers an intensive three-week summer course called Summer Scholars. The program continues to operate in the fall and spring with a 13-week Saturday-only course.

Families typically seek out the Scholars program after realizing that their children are struggling with reading, writing, and spelling. The Scholars program supplements services received at the students’ schools or takes the place of these services when students are no longer eligible to receive them. Families come for Shelton’s resources and reputation, in addition to the convenience and affordability of the program. They stay for the results.

Students are admitted into the program after completing an informal assessment or submitting test results from other evaluation centers. Students are placed into small groups according to ability. In the process of receiving needed intervention, students may realize for the first time that there are many others who share their learning differences. This often sparks engagement and friendship. It turns out that kids like to learn with others who are like them.

Summer Scholars students meet Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. between June 12 and July 3. At the heart of this densely packed program is the Sequential English Education (S.E.E.) curriculum, a comprehensive, multisensory, structured approach to language remediation written by Dr. Joyce Pickering, Shelton‘s Executive Director Emerita, based on the work of Dr. Charles Shedd.

Dr. Shedd’s model for training volunteers to help students with dyslexia proved to be a highly effective and low-cost method for providing remediation services. Following this model, Dr. Pickering pioneered the Scholars program at Shelton in 1990 to address the unmet needs in the broader community. Since that time, hundreds of tutors have received extensive training and supervision in the delivery of the S.E.E. curriculum to work in the Scholars program.

Tutors include college students, Shelton alumni, current and former teachers, retirees, parents, and grandparents. Some tutors are experienced professionals working towards advanced certification or licensure; others are embarking upon a voyage of discovery that may lead to a future in teaching. In all cases, they are committed to the mission of serving students with learning differences.

The Shelton Scholars program provides critical services for many students in the DFW area. At the cost of trading in some of their summer break, a time when most students experience a learning loss, these students are developing skills in oral and written spelling, reading, grammar, vocabulary, cursive handwriting, auditory discrimination and memory.

Students are having fun, too. Whether shooting hoops during a break or making playdates with newfound friends, their increasing confidence becomes plain to see. The pep in their steps as they enter the building or smiles on their faces as they join their cohorts are a joy to behold and an inspiration for everyone to continue with their work.

For more information about Shelton's Scholars program, visit this link.

With special thanks to Jessica Newman, Director of Shelton S.E.E., for her insights into the Scholars program and her ongoing dedication to the students it serves.

This week, the Oak Cliff Lions Club hosted John “Lucky” Luckadoo, the 102-year-old World War II B-17 bomber pilot and subject of the book “Damn Lucky.”

“We were so darn young. – innocent, gullible and naïve going up against a very formidable enemy – the German Air Force, which at that time was the most formidable force in the world,” he said. “We did not have any clue what we were going to be confronted with, but we soon found out.”

Trained as a pilot with the United States Air Force, Second Lieutenant Luckadoo was assigned to the 100th Bomb Group stationed in Thorpe Abbotts, England known as the "Bloody 100th." Between June and October 1943, he flew B-17 Flying Fortresses over France and Germany on bombing runs devised to destroy the Nazi war machine.

With a shrapnel torn Bible in his flight jacket pocket and his girlfriend’s silk stocking around his neck like a scarf as talismans, Luckadoo piloted through Luftwaffe machine-gun fire and antiaircraft flak while enduring subzero temperatures to complete twenty-five missions and his combat service. The average bomber crew rarely survived after eight to twelve missions.

The packed room hung on every word as he answered questions about the conditions and his injury from frostbite.

Also in attendance was Past President Dr. Bill Lawhorn, also a World War II veteran. The two shared stories and honored the club with their presence. When he finished his presentation, the whole room stood and honored him for his tremendous courage and sacrifices.

The Dallas Historical Society Celebrated Its Centennial Year In 2022

The stories of Dallas are shared each day at the Dallas Historical Society through the three million items that comprise our archives and artifact collections. Established in 1922, the Dallas Historical Society collects, preserves, and exhibits the unique heritage of Dallas and Texas to educate and inspire future generations.

Housed at the Hall of State in Fair Park since 1938, DHS presents these collections through education programs, exhibitions, tours, access to research materials and workshops.

Among the three million historical artifacts at DHS are such treasures as Sam Houston’s handwritten account of the Battle of San Jacinto, the only known original Juneteenth document, James Fannin’s watch, and Santa Anna’s spurs. The DHS collection houses over 10,000 bound volumes and receives more than 1,500 research requests annually.

Each year, the Dallas Historical Society is visited by over 160,000 people and serves more than 20,000 students through guided tours and educational programming at the Hall of State, as well as outreach programs at schools. Visit the website for more information at www.dallashistory.org

Texans are wild about fajitas, so Black Agave, North Texas’ most acclaimed new Mexican-inspired restaurant, is creating a special designed to treat diners to a walk on the wild side. From Wednesday, June 26 through Saturday, July 6 or while they last, Black Agave will offer diners the chance to order a platter of alligator fajitas for $29.99.

Alligator has been a staple in Southern cooking since the mid-1800s and has long been a lauded protein in much of Mexico, so it is only appropriate that the culinary innovators at Black Agave reached back in the history books for this presentation. Black Agave has been recognized since its opening seven months ago as a culinary leader for taking traditionally rooted Mexican preparations and seasonings and bringing them forward with contemporary cooking styles and presentations.

The alligator fajitas are masa-fried and tossed in Arrachera sauce, with sautéed onions and peppers, and all the fajita fixings.  They are the perfect complement to the array of exceptional tequilas and mezcals available in the restaurant, both by themselves and as a part of a culinary-minded craft cocktail program.

Black Agave gives guests an elevated, contemporary Mexican dining experience. Black Agave serves beloved heritage recipes with bold flavors created by Chef Thomas Archer, who uses only the highest-quality ingredients. The restaurant also prides itself on its unique cocktail program, with flavors that complement the restaurant’s food.

Richardson toy builder, Earthbound Martian, creates Castle Jade for the Dallas CASA Parade of Playhouses

Castle Jade, Earthbound Martian

Dallas CASA’s 29th annual Parade of Playhouses features 13 imaginative children’s playhouses, each one custom designed and built by local architects and builders who donate the houses.

For toy company owners Chris and Cally Rogers of Earthbound Martian, building their second playhouse for Dallas CASA’s annual Parade of Playhouses was particularly emotional this year. Their company’s “resident elf,” Jade Byas, passed away in January 2024, and they decided to build Castle Jade in her honor. Jade loved castles and the color purple, so the initial design was straightforward: a castle with a purple marble tower.

“The actual house went up really quickly this year, but it’s the details we spend the most time on,” Chris Rogers said. “We really let our inner kids drive the design.

Castle Jade features specially made “stones” of foam, a tiny fairy door, a purple marble armory, swords and shields donated by Black Dragon Armory and even a glittery dragon claw mark, from an imaginary magical dragon attack.

The greatest challenge during construction came from a severe thunderstorm that hit Richardson in May. Castle Jade was being constructed in Martin’s driveway, and he was concerned the 70-mile an hour winds would damage the playhouse. “We built it to withstand dragon attack but turns out that’s good for massive thunderstorms, too,” Martin said. The house was undamaged in the storm.

Ultimately, it’s Dallas CASA’s mission that motivates Martin and his company. “As much as we love building these houses, we would not do it just for anyone,” he said. “Dallas CASA is just a great cause.”

Martin has already been thinking ahead to next year – really far ahead, in fact. He’s thinking about building a futuristic vehicle with an observation tower and swivel seating.

The 29th annual Dallas CASA Parade of Playhouses continues through June 30 at NorthPark Center. The playhouses will be raffled off, and tickets can be purchased in person at NorthPark Center or online at dallascasa.org.
