Since its inception in 1957, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has worked to preserve, protect, and share the history of American military aviation. For the second year, the Dallas-based nonprofit will host Aviation Discovery Fest from Oct. 4-6 at Dallas Executive Airport.

A fantastic array of historically significant and beautiful World War II-era airplanes will be on display at the Aviation Discovery Fest, many of which can be booked for private rides. For true history buffs, these airplane rides serve as bucket-list memories and an exceptional way to experience history. Funds generated from rides help maintain and preserve these flying pieces of history. In addition to rides, several airplanes attending will offer cockpit tours and hands-on experiences. Featured aircraft at this year’s event and their classifications include:

B-29 Superfortress FIFI, Heavy Bomber *

P-51 Mustang Gunfighter, Fighter *

B-24 Liberator Diamond Lil, Heavy Bomber

L-26 AeroCommander Ike’s Bird, Liaison

T-34 Mentor, Trainer *

PT-13 Stearman, Trainer *

AT-6 Texan Nella, Trainer *

T-33 Shooting Star, Trainer

C-47 Skytrain That’s All, Brother, Transport *

PT-19 Pride of Corsicana, Trainer *

C-45 Expeditor Texas Dolls, Transport

C-45 Expeditor Bucket of Bolts, Transport *

L-5 Sentinel, Liaison

P-40 Warhawk, Fighter

R4D Ready 4 Duty, Transport

AC-47 Spooky, Gunship

C-45 Expeditor Yellow Belly, Transport *

B-25 Yellow Rose, Medium Bomber *

* Indicates paid rides available.

New to the festival this year is an AC47 “Spooky,” which is interesting because it was a frequently used gunship in the Korean War and Vietnam War eras. Also known as “Puff the Magic Dragon” for how it looked while unleashing bombs, the AC47 will be on static display at the festival, with veterans who flew the warbirds on hand to speak about the airplane.

But the Aviation Discovery Fest offers more than just seeing these historic warbirds. Families will enjoy one of the largest Living History experiences available in the country, with re-enactors and military vehicles. These expertly staffed interactive displays bring the wartime experience to life for guests of all ages. Kids will love the chance to ride in a half-track or other military transport vehicle.

Visitors will find the Aviation Discovery Zone inside the Henry B. Tipple National Aviation Education Center (NAEC). This highly interactive area includes dozens of educational experiences, live performances and more. Throughout the weekend, veterans will share their experiences, often in front of the airplanes that were historically significant during the campaigns in which they served.

The event will also include a classic car show featuring restored vehicles from the 1930s through 1960s.

“American veterans are celebrated in every aspect of Aviation Discovery Fest,” said Leah Block, Vice President of Marketing for the Commemorative Air Force. “Their stories will come to life in ways that families cannot experience anywhere else.”

Friday, Oct. 4, is Education Day at Aviation Discovery Fest. On that day, thousands of school groups and homeschooled children can attend the event free of charge when registered by Sept. 20. Schools or homeschool groups should register to attend here: aviationdiscoveryfest.org/education-day.

Volunteers are needed throughout the weekend. Those interested should register here: aviationdiscoveryfest.org/volunteer.

Tickets for the Aviation Discovery Fest start at just $5. A family pass, which includes two adult tickets and up to three children’s tickets on Saturday or Sunday, is available for $40, which reflects up to a $30 savings. New this year, visitors can purchase an additional cockpit tour pass, which gives access to inside the aircraft. Tickets for the event can be purchased at aviationdiscoveryfest.org.

Galleria Dallas has been one of the top holiday destinations for shoppers across North Texas and around the world for more than four decades. From the iconic 95-foot-tall Christmas tree to Missile Toes, the ice-skating, back-flipping Santa who shoots fireworks from his skates, the holiday celebration at Galleria Dallas is recognized as one of the grandest nationwide.

The holiday season at Galleria Dallas kicks off Nov. 10 with the installation of America’s tallest indoor Christmas tree, which features LED lighting by Twinkly that allows for brilliant, animated and immersive light shows on the tree. The tree has 850 branches – each the size of a small Christmas tree – plus more than 15,000 ornaments, 215,000 points of light and a 100-pound, 10-foot-tall LED star. The tree will be complete on the evening of Nov. 13.

Festivities continue throughout the season with live entertainment and numerous other holiday events, Nov. 22-Jan. 6.

Santa arrives at Galleria Dallas on Friday, Nov. 22, and will welcome guests in Santaland on Level I near Banana Republic with a magical experience and amazing visuals. Galleria Dallas is proud to offer the area’s most technologically advanced Santa experience, where families board a magical train, seeing the sights as they move from Dallas to the North Pole, and thanks to Santaland’s special wish list technology, Santa knows what kids want under the tree on Christmas morning. This year, there will be designated times for Santa experiences for those with pets, families with children with special needs, and even a Spanish-speaking Santa. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made online now at SnowDayDallas.com.

They say every snowflake is unique, and so is every visit to SNOWDAY, the acclaimed immersive exhibit that changes every holiday season and has become a tradition for DFW families. Guests will explore the secret town where Santa’s elves live, with nearly 10,000 square feet of Hollywood-grade sets and styling creating some of the elves’ favorite places, along with state-of-the-art, touch-free photo technology. SNOWDAY is integrating AI image processing into a photo op for the first time, which will allow for surreal holiday photos of guests. Additional new features include a new multimedia show including lights, sounds and videos, culminating with “real” snowfall; a Christmas Kaleidoscope photo op; and, of course, the return of fan-favorite rooms like the Christmas lights maze, which now has twinkling lights. Guests also can purchase snacks at Santa’s helpers’ favorite watering hole, The Tipsy Elf. Even if you’ve been to SNOWDAY before, you’ll want to come again to capture all its magical, Instagrammable moments.

For thousands of shoppers, a trip to Galleria Dallas to enjoy the abundance of sales and promotions offered on Black Friday (Nov. 29) starts the holiday season in good cheer. This year, there are even more reasons to choose Galleria Dallas – the newly expanded H&M including the first H&M Home in Texas, UNIQLO, the expanded Lululemon, Pandora and North Italia.

The holiday festivities kick off at noon on Black Friday with the impressive Grand Tree Lighting Celebration, which features a spectacular free ice-skating show with nationally recognized figure skaters including two-time National Champion and 2022 Olympian Ashley Cain, two-time Olympian Keegan Messing and 2022 Olympians Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker. Stay for the fireworks finale as the tree is lit by Missile Toes, Galleria’s famed ice-skating Santa. The lighting celebration will be hosted again Saturday, Nov. 30 at noon.

A ticketed Grand Holiday Ice Show on Dec. 8 will benefit local charity Broadway Dallas.  Among the featured skaters: 2022 Olympian Mariah Bell. Tickets for family pods will be available for purchase in November at GalleriaDallas.com/holiday.

Galleria Dallas will celebrate Hanukkah on Dec. 29, with a Menorah Lighting led by Rabbi Andrew Paley from Temple Shalom and a performance by Kol Shalom, Temple Shalom’s youth choir. Sufganiyots will be served to attendees.

During the holiday season, Galleria Dallas shines with holiday décor top to bottom throughout each level. For those guests wishing to stay and make a weekend out of it, the adjoining Westin Galleria Dallas hotel is conveniently located and accessible to Galleria Dallas. Guests have access to holiday shopping and dining at more than 200 retailers including several exclusive, specialty boutiques and stores such as Apple, Bachendorf’s, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Mango, Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co and Zara. Enjoy all the season has to offer, including Galleria Dallas’ extended holiday hours, while checking off the gift-giving list!

Galleria Dallas enhanced its Outdoor Plaza this year, making it the perfect gathering spot, and guests will find an interactive art exhibit there from Nov. 1-Jan. 2. Roseaux is a “particip’active” installation that invites users to activate the base of the larger-than-life reeds, rhythmically propelling myriad colors up the stem. Can you and your friends turn the reeds the same solid color?

This holiday season, more than 60 local groups will perform wintry favorites throughout the center at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Please see the full schedule and more information on holiday events at GalleriaDallas.com/holiday.

Noah McGough’s Kicking for A Cause has already raised more than $12,000 to benefit Men of Nehemiah

Noah McGough, a senior at Jesuit Preparatory High School in Dallas and a kicker on the football team, has many eyes on him to play at the college level, but this season he is concentrating his efforts on giving back to his community.

McGough is bringing awareness to Men of Nehemiah, a faith-based, nine-month residential addiction recovery program in Dallas. During the 2024 football season, he is kicking for a cause and asking for the community’s support with donations and pledges. For every point he scores, the funds raised will go to scholarships and support counseling for the men’s families at Men of Nehemiah. The community can learn more or donate at menofnehemiah.org/kick.

“Two years ago, I participated in a Men of Nehemiah worship service," explained McGough. "I thought it was amazing how these men were praising Jesus, but I did not know their stories.  Now, I try and go every Tuesday night and Sunday morning. I absolutely love getting to worship with these men and learn from their testimonies. It is life changing!”

After three games this season, McGough has scored 15 total points (two field goals and nine extra points) for Jesuit DallasAt $561 per point pledged so far, and $4,325 in onetime donations McGough has already raised $12,740.

McGough is not just kicking for the Men of Nehemiah. He is also investing his time with the men. “Every Tuesday night the Men of Nehemiah gather for All City Worship, a spirit-filled service that is powerful and transformative,” said McGough. “You must experience it to understand the power that’s present in that room. I can feel the love of God in and around these men.”

All City Worship is open to the public. It is held from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. every Tuesday at Men of Nehemiah, 2010 Al Lipscomb Way in Dallas.

“The men see God’s love through Noah and they respond to him,” said Jim Ramsey, Men of Nehemiah CEO, who had retired after a successful 30-year consulting career when he came to a worship service at Men of Nehemiah. He was drawn in to how he could help the organization be more successful.

“We’re very thankful Noah is drawing attention to our program and raising much needed funds,” continued Ramsey. “But, more importantly, he’s demonstrating to our men that he really cares about them. Many of these men have long been estranged from their families. Some have been incarcerated. More than a few lived on the streets while some come to us from gated communities in affluent neighborhoods. Addiction respects no zip code.”

Jesuit Dallas’ next home football game will be Friday, September 27 against Irving High School at the Ranger Stadium on the Jesuit Dallas campus at 12345 Inwood Road. McGough says he will continue to ‘kick for a cause’ as long as Jesuit Dallas advances, including into the playoffs.

“God blessed me with the gift to kick a football, and kick it really accurately," continued McGough. "I want to use my gift to help others. But I am not alone out there on the field. My snapper, Phoenix Dericksweiler starts it all with a great snap. Our holder, Jaeger Krauss, must catch the ball and place it in just the right spot. Our entire line must block the attackers in order for me to be successful. We all need a team to win. I am grateful to be able to support the team at Men of Nehemiah. They are winning a second chance at Life.”

In 2023, McGough was recognized as one of the best kickers in the nation. He was the top kicker in Texas, making 17 out of 21 field goal attempts, and ranked number six in the United States. His achievements include being named to the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 6A All-State First Team Kicker and Player of the Year for All District 7-6A Special Teams. He finished last season scoring 96 total points for Jesuit Dallas.

Men of Nehemiah is a unique program that combines Biblical discipleship with professional counseling and military discipline to restore lives that have been derailed by drug and alcohol addiction. The objective is to help each man become the person God intended him to be and reunite him with his loved ones and community.

In 1994, Pastor Louis Harrell, a former US Army Colonel, founded Men of Nehemiah in New Orleans to deliver his wayward son, Louis Harrell, Jr., from the grip of addiction. Louis Jr. relocated to North Texas, where he launched Men of Nehemiah in South Dallas with the help of Roger McCasland, President and CEO of Operation Relief Center.

Today, Men of Nehemiah has helped more than 1,500 men find paths to recovery. Research compiled in 2022 affirmed that 61% of men who graduated from Men of Nehemiah prior to 2020 stayed sober for at least two years. More information is available at menofnehemiah.org.

Volunteers Groups of teen volunteers with the lunches they assembled for the Salvation Army.

Prosper, Texas.  Teen and adult volunteers assembled about 450 sack lunches on September 10 and 11 in honor of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. These lunches benefitted homeless individuals through the Salvation Army of North Texas, which delivers up to 1,000 lunches daily to the hungry across several Dallas and Fort Worth counties.

The Salvation Army fights poverty, addiction, and homelessness, with a motto of “doing the most good for the most people.” In North Texas, that means covering 4,078 square miles in Dallas, Tarrant and Ellis, Denton and Collin, and Rockwall Counties, making this “the largest Salvation Army Command in the world,” according to their website.

Ana Blick, a seventh grader, helped spread peanut butter and jelly and assemble sandwiches. “It was fun, and it felt good to help people,” she said.

Justin Bunker, a junior in high school, focused on the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the first responders who served their neighbors and even gave their lives on that fateful day in 2001. “It was such a tragic day and so there were so many people that were involved in helping,” he said. “So we just want to try and keep that up.” He emphasized how much fun it is to gather with friends and do simple acts of service.

Abby Ryan, a high school sophomore who recently moved to Prosper, was thoughtful about the impact their service had on others. “For every sandwich that I made, I was just thinking about the person who was going to receive it,” she said. “And I think that it’s really cool that every single sandwich I made, even though each one took like 30 seconds, it was going to give them something to eat…. It took so little effort on my part and it’s just going to help someone in such a big way.”

The sandwiches and other donated items were added to lunch sacks that had been decorated by children earlier in the summer at an Olympic-themed activity that helped them celebrate unity and community.

Kent Hooper, bishop of a congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Prosper, said that this project was an opportunity to do what Jesus Christ did for others. “The Savior made a living, meaning he was out there all the time with people that were different than the status quo or whatever was out there in the world,” said Hooper. “He was hanging out with people that needed help, that needed to have change…. What better thing could we do than go out there and try to help and serve those that are in need?”

To volunteer with the Salvation Army in your area, visit JustServe.org for ongoing project details.
