Perfect for warming up on chilly days, this dish is a delicious way to embrace the Lone Star State's cold-weather tradition.

This fan-favorite comfort food comes in 12-,16- and 32-ounce servings and is perfect for dine in, drive-thru and take-out, as well as delivery, where available.

Microphones and Murder

Podcasting Sisters Mystery, #1

by

Erin Huss

A new true crime podcast team investigates a missing person cold case.

Liv Olsen was working on the number one true-crime podcast program in the nation, Cold in America, when she learned about the 10-year-old missing person's case of Amelia "Millie" Clark. Based on this case, she pitched the idea of a new podcast, Missing or Murdered, to her Cold in America boss, who not only turned her down flat but added insult to injury by scoffing at the idea of Liv as the host. With hurt feelings and injured pride, Liv quits her job and goes all-in to bring her dream to fruition, taking her younger stepsister, Camry Lewis, along as her assistant.

Camry has relatives in Santa Maria, where Millie had lived, so the girls set up a home base for their investigation and interviews for the show at Camry's Great-Aunt Hazel's home, which eases the strain on Liv's minuscule operating budget. Hazel is delighted to host the sisters, as her life has become somewhat quiet since her husband passed away. As she learns more about the girls' project, Hazel enlists the aid of her grandson, Oliver, who is a successful YouTuber with over 5 million subscribers to his channel.

Together, the four start looking into Amelia's disappearance, with their first step being to interview the original detective on the case. Now retired, he is anxious to see that his only open case is resolved. When one clue after another results in dead ends and Amelia's father changes his mind about the podcast reinvigorating interest in his daughter's disappearance, Liv worries that the podcast she has staked everything on is going down in flames.

Microphones and Murder is the first book in author Erin Huss's fun Podcasting Sisters Mystery series, and I was immediately drawn to the likable young narrator who decides to follow her dream of hosting her own show. The premise of the true-crime podcast is timely and exciting, and her characters are engaging. The story is told from Liv's perspective, and her narrative is witty, fun, and entertaining. I liked that Liv's character, although competent and confident, also has a very real vulnerability as she second-guesses her decision to go out on her own and follow her dream. Stepsister Camry is young, flirty, and sassy but has her vulnerabilities as well. I felt the mystery was sound, and Liv's investigation made sense. I'll definitely be reading more of this author's work.

With its topical premise, non-stop plot, and engaging characters, I recommend MICROPHONES AND MURDER to cozy mystery readers who like young, savvy female protagonists.

 About Angelica’s Creations:

Introducing Angelica's Creations. Launched in 2016, Angelica's Creations is a small business that I proudly turned into my full-time profession diving headfirst into entrepreneurship while balancing life as a stay-at-home mom to my two daughters at the time. With a natural flair for crafting and DIY projects, I was always the creative one in my family. What began with party decorations, t-shirts, and similar items, but over the years, my work has evolved to include unique embroidery and custom creations that hold special meaning.

Despite the uncertainties that come with starting a business, I persevered. As the years passed, I built a loyal customer base, invested in advanced machinery, and my passion for what I do flourished. Fast forward to 2024, I’m still dedicated and continue to run my business full-time and have also taken on the role as an event coordinator and have hosted various events and vendor markets while also embracing life as a stay-at-home mom to three daughters. I cherish the relationships I've formed with my customers and take pride in crafting meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces. Based in the Arlington area, I am thrilled to offer shipping services worldwide.

A bit about myself: I’m Angelica Cantu a 27year old, happily married to my high school sweetheart for the past ten years. He is my greatest supporter, and together we navigate the beautiful journey of parenthood, and entrepreneurship. In the near future, I envision myself owning my very own storefront, welcoming even more clientele, and expanding my reach. With this goal in mind, I’m excited to continue growing Angelica’s Creations and building lasting relationships with my community.

The highly anticipated Tianyu Lights Festival has officially opened in Grand Prairie at the Texas Trust CU Theatre Festival Grounds, and it’s nothing short of magical. Known as one of the most spectacular Chinese lantern festivals in the world, this event transforms acres of space into a glowing wonderland. With more than 250,000 light bulbs and thousands of strings of lights, it features 19 larger-than-life interactive sculptures designed to captivate visitors of all ages.

This year’s festival follows the enchanting story of Koda, a 7-year-old boy who embarks on a nighttime adventure through the magical rainforest of Caballococha, Peru. The concept was dreamed up during the pandemic in late 2020 and brought to life after over three years of creative planning. A team of skilled artisans spent months handcrafting the displays before shipping them to Texas in 60 massive containers, followed by six weeks of installation to prepare for opening night.

“This is the first time we’ve completely pivoted from our traditional focus on botanical gardens and zoos,” Huiyuan Liu, event manager at Tianyu Arts & Culture. “We usually create educational exhibits that are scientifically accurate, but for Koda’s Adventure, we let our imaginations run wild. This show is all about offering a fantastical journey, with characters and worlds beyond anything you’d find in nature.”

Visitors to the festival will find more than just beautiful light displays. The event features numerous interactive components designed to engage all the senses and create unforgettable experiences. Highlights include:

  • The Owl Spinning Tunnel: A whirlwind of lights and motion that gives visitors the sensation of flying through the night sky.
  • The Wetland with the Frog: A fun, score-based game where guests can interact with a whimsical frog character.
  • The Bamboo Castle: A towering, vibrant structure that includes a musical instrument and a spinning dragon that fascinates both children and adults alike.
  • The Peacock: A colorful light display where visitors can pedal a bike to change the peacock's tail color.
  • Dragon Nest: Step onto special boards that trigger a color-changing effect, awakening a dragon.
  • Magical Forest with Pine Trees: A hidden treasure box is waiting to be discovered among the illuminated pine trees near the festival's main stage.
  • Mist Forest Tunnel: At 150 feet long, this mesmerizing light tunnel offers a dramatic and immersive experience as guests walk through misty, illuminated pathways.
  • Interactive Piano Dance Floor: A 20ft by 60ft area near the main stage where visitors can create their own music by stepping on illuminated piano keys embedded in the floor.
  • Dragons of Two Worlds: Both Chinese and Western-style dragons make appearances at four different locations throughout the festival, carefully tucked into hidden corners of the grounds.

In addition to the visual feast, the festival also offers a taste of traditional Chinese culture, with five food vendors and two handicraft vendors selling intricate Chinese artwork, such as inner-bottle paintings and aluminum weaving.

The creation of Koda’s Adventure took years of planning and more than just skillful artistry. The festival organizers worked tirelessly to ensure the event was accessible to all guests, including those with wheelchairs and strollers. A new pedestrian path was constructed specifically for the event, ensuring that everyone can experience the magic of the lights up close.

“This is one of our largest and most intricate installations to date,” said Huiyuan Liu.  “It’s been a long journey from the initial concept to the final installation, but it’s all been worth it. We’re excited to share our work with D/FW and hope that visitors leave feeling inspired and amazed.”

Tianyu Lights Festival is now open at the Texas Trust CU Theatre Festival Grounds and will run through January 19, 2024. The festival is open every Tuesday through Sunday, from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM, offering a perfect opportunity to explore the enchanting world of light and culture during the holiday season. With interactive exhibits, nightly performances and a variety of food and handmade souvenirs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Dallas Historical Society Celebrated Its Centennial Year In 2022

The stories of Dallas are shared each day at the Dallas Historical Society through the three million items that comprise our archives and artifact collections. Established in 1922, the Dallas Historical Society collects, preserves, and exhibits the unique heritage of Dallas and Texas to educate and inspire future generations.

Housed at the Hall of State in Fair Park since 1938, DHS presents these collections through education programs, exhibitions, tours, access to research materials and workshops.

Among the three million historical artifacts at DHS are such treasures as Sam Houston’s handwritten account of the Battle of San Jacinto, the only known original Juneteenth document, James Fannin’s watch, and Santa Anna’s spurs. The DHS collection houses over 10,000 bound volumes and receives more than 1,500 research requests annually.
