Like It’s Christmas

Winterstorm Village, #1

by

Diana A. Hicks

Marvelous enemies-to-lovers romance with a holiday theme!

Like It’s Christmas is a new enemies-to-lovers romance set during the days leading up to Christmas and is the first book in author Diana A. Hicks’s Winterstorm Village series. With an engaging main character, a vulnerable leading man, and a close-knit small town that believes in the magic of Christmas, I quickly fell under this story’s spell, and it is the perfect way to kick off some satisfying holiday reading.

Parker Cruz is the assistant to her father, the mayor, and she plans to make this Christmas season the biggest, best, and most successful ever for Winterstorm Village, which depends on the profits from the holiday tourist trade. But when her father is injured putting the Christmas light up on her house, she finds herself having to work with the deputy mayor and local Scrooge, whom she has despised since high school. Rhett Parker has a secret in his past that has estranged him from his illustrious family, whose ancestors founded the town. All he wants is to make Winterstorm Village prosper through his efforts and not because of his family’s reputation, even if that means cutting back the overly generous budget earmarked for Christmas decorations and activities and annoying the mayor’s spoiled daughter.

The plot has a nice push-pull, back and forth between the two main characters, and Parker the girl (a differentiation she’s always hated) has a fun posse of girlfriends looking out for her best interests. But I thought the most fun was the townspeople’s traditional belief in love magically blossoming during a holiday snowstorm. When a bad storm hits the village and damages much of the downtown decorations, including the big tree, Parker and Rhett try to capitalize on the superstition and stage a fake relationship, a relationship no one would ever believe otherwise, to keep up everyone’s spirits as they try to recover and salvage the tourist season just until the holidays are over. But will the magic actually prove to be real, and are they headed for their own Christmas romance?

I recommend LIKE IT’S CHRISTMAS to romance readers looking for a great holiday story to get into the Christmas spirit.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the author through Xpresso Book Tours.

Cars for Kids partnered with Project Love Love this holiday season to deliver smiles, hope, and generosity to young parents and their children at Texans Can Academies - Pleasant Grove and Oak Cliff. This inspiring gift distribution event brought holiday cheer to students and their families, showcasing the power of community and compassion during the festive season.

Held at Texans Can Academies - Pleasant Grove and Oak Cliff, the event provided a platform for both organizations to come together in support of at-risk students and their families. Gifts were distributed to young parents and their children, reflecting a shared mission to spread kindness and uplift those in need.

“Cars for Kids is committed to giving back to the community that supports us,” said Cheryl Sutterfield-Jones, CEO of Cars for Kids. “Partnering with Project Love Love allows us to amplify our efforts to make a real difference in the lives of these young parents and their children. This event is about more than just gifts; it’s about hope, encouragement, and community support.”

Project Love Love, a nonprofit based in Fort Worth, has long been dedicated to serving those in need across Dallas and Tarrant Counties. Their mission to foster kindness and compassion aligns perfectly with Cars for Kids’ dedication to supporting education and empowering students to achieve their dreams.

"Through this partnership, we’re able to create meaningful moments that truly matter," said Lisa Aschenberg, President of Project Love Love. "The joy we see on the faces of these young parents and their children is a testament to what can be accomplished when communities come together."

Texans Can Academies, a network of charter schools designed to help at-risk students earn their high school diplomas, provides a vital second chance for students seeking to create better futures for themselves and their families. Events like this demonstrate the critical role of community support in the students’ success stories.

Guests visiting John Wayne: An American Experience in the Fort Worth Stockyards know that the destination is more than just an acclaimed museum. It is also the home to the flagship John Wayne Stock & Supply, the curated collection of Western apparel, art and giftware celebrating the spirit and legacy of the acclaimed actor.

The beautifully appointed boutique is a treasure trove of limited-edition décor and apparel, and now will be the host of a pop-up celebrating the work of one of the West’s most acclaimed creative couples, master milliner Teressa Foglia and multimedia artist Ty Hays. The Hats + Art exhibit will be at John Wayne Stock & Supply Jan. 10 through Feb. 3.

The artists will be onsite for hat customizations in person Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11, in advance of the kickoff of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. Guests will enjoy special tastings of Wayne Family Estate wines during the event. This exciting collaboration brings together custom hats, captivating artwork and immersive experiences for guests to Cowtown. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.

Guests will be able to enjoy dozens of Hays’ original artworks, including a complete gallery wall dedicated to the artist as well as smaller pieces integrated throughout the boutique. Foglia’s curated collection of approximately 20 hat designs will have a dedicated area that blends the Teressa Foglia and John Wayne aesthetic, showcasing both classic and modern hat designs inspired by John Wayne’s iconic styles. The lounge area will serve as the centerpiece, combining the hat display, bar and seating to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Ethan Wayne is proud to introduce these two renowned artists to shoppers in North Texas.

“Teressa and Ty are truly among the top creators in their respective genres and they have been friends of the John Wayne family for some time,” Wayne said. “We are honored to host them for this pop-up experience, and proud that we will be able to further benefit the John Wayne Cancer Foundation through the event sales.”

Often called the “It Girl” milliner, Foglia has created custom hats for clients ranging from Keri Russell and John Mayer to Cindy Crawford and Gerard Butler. She believes that each hat should be as unique as its wearer, and she sources materials, trim and adornments in markets in Paris, Sardinia, Ibiza, Tokyo and Bali. She also offers clients a bespoke, ready-to-wear collection in which the interior of each hat is lined with a one-of-a-kind vintage silk, making every design truly a work of art.

Hays creates memorable pieces that celebrate the beauty and the intensity of the American west. His unique techniques highlight the role that light and motion play in art. His work is made more special by the range of techniques and media in which he works, including charcoal, pastel, limestone wash, graphite and acrylic.

While visiting the Hats + Art exhibit, guests are encouraged to purchase tickets to the museum. John Wayne: An American Experience is structured to give guests an intimate tour of the life of John Wayne. Starting with his early childhood and career, each room highlights an aspect of Duke’s legacy. Museum patrons have exclusive access to never-before-seen family photos and correspondences that have been thoughtfully curated by the Wayne family to give guests a holistic view of the icon, whose values translate both on and off the silver screen.

Tickets to the exhibit are $22.95 for adults, $20.95 for seniors 65+, students with college ID and military with ID, and $17.95 for kids 6-12 at johnwayneae.com. Kids 5 and younger are admitted for free.

Donations to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation can be made at John Wayne Stock & Supply and at johnwayne.org.

Students at the conference

On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, more than 1,000 teen members from across North Texas will gather at the third annual Texas Peer-to-Peer Youth Conference to connect and learn from others about how to break the stigma of discussing mental health and to provide help and hope for their fellow students and communities. In its third year, this peer-to-peer conference sold out the first day of registration. Students will come from 29 school districts, private and charter school systems throughout North Texas and spend a day learning about how to help their peers through inspirational talks, interactive breakout sessions and mentoring.

The conference features a day of dynamic speakers interacting with conference attendees from across North Texas. It runs 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Dr. Marcelo Cavazos Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 900 E. Sanford St., Arlington, TX 76011. The conference is presented by a collaboration of Grace Loncar Foundation, Grant Halliburton Foundation and The Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation, nonprofits founded in memory of loved ones lost to suicide.

Peer-to-peer groups are the eyes and ears of a school, students trained to watch for at-risk peers, provide friendship, identify warning signs and seek help from adults. The groups work with school advisors to train students identified by their classmates as trustworthy peers. Through evidence-based training modules, these members are empowered to be a safe contact for their classmates. Peer-to-peer members are not taught to act as counselors, but rather, are educated on how to recognize signs of suicidal ideation, and how to properly and respectfully report this to an adult.

Kevin Hall, president of Grant Halliburton Foundation, said, “It’s a privilege to co-host this conference for students who are helping their classmates through service, hope and kindness. We want to keep our young people healthy, hopeful and here, and these peer-to-peer teams are important in helping us do that.”

Currently, there are more than 2,500 peer-to-peer members on more than 200 campuses across North Texas. These students were invited to the conference to connect with members from other schools around the state, build a network of support and learn and collaborate with one another.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24 in Texas,” said Matt Vereecke, CEO of The Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation. “This conference provides these members an opportunity to learn more about how they can provide a safe and supportive space at their schools for students struggling with mental health and help reverse this staggering statistic.”

The conference sponsors include Lyda Hill Philanthropies (Hope Sponsor); Faith, Fight, Finish and Vincent Genovese Memorial Foundation (Kindness Sponsors); UT Southwestern (Encouragement Sponsors); Children’s Medical Center and Eating Recovery Center (Friend Sponsor).
