Mansfield, TX – Methodist Mansfield Medical Center today joined millions worldwide in observing Global Handwashing Day, highlighting the crucial role of hand hygiene in protecting health. Celebrated annually on October 15, this initiative serves as a reminder that regular handwashing can significantly reduce the spread of infections and diseases, benefiting individuals, families, and communities alike. The medical center is excited to partner with Buff City Soap, who provided the soap and whose dedication to high-quality, plant-based soap products aligns with our mission of promoting health and hygiene. In conjunction with this observance, Methodist Mansfield conducted a handwashing poster contest for elementary art students. Fourth grader Charlotte Adolph from Brenda Norwood Elementary School took first place with her creative drawing. Leila Amaya and Sonni Carl, both also fourth graders from the same school, earned second and third places, respectively. Additionally, Joaquin Soto, an art teacher at Lake Ridge High School, showcased his talent with a striking soap sculpture featuring hands under a faucet holding a bar of soap. Methodist Mansfield Medical Center encourages everyone to prioritize hand hygiene—not just today, but every day. Let’s cultivate a culture of cleanliness in our community as we celebrate clean hands and healthy lives!

2024 DSO Symphony Gala Patrick Means, Laura Harris-Means, Cassandra Johnson, Avery Johnson (Credit Sylvia Elzafon)

On Saturday, September 28, 2024, classical music connoisseurs and influential figures stepped into the sophisticated elegance of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s 2024 Symphony Gala. More than 420 distinguished guests gathered at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center for an unforgettable evening of dinner, drinks, a live auction and an exciting afterparty. The evening featured a phenomenal performance by world-renowned guest artist Lang Lang on piano alongside the DSO conducted by Louise W. & Edmund J. Kahn Music Director Fabio Luisi. Continuing the tradition, the annual Symphony Gala is one of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s largest annual fundraisers, benefitting the DSO’s life-changing education and community outreach initiatives, including Young Strings and Young Musicians. These programs touch the lives of more than 243,000 North Texas residents annually, including more than 30,000 children.

Gala Chairs, Laura Harris-Means and Patrick Means, along with Honorary Chairs Cassandra and Avery Johnson, welcomed sponsors, DSO stalwarts and notables including Venise and Larry Stuart, Marena and Roger Gault, Andy Smith and Paul von Wupperfeld, Rachel and John Koryl, Chuck Steelman, Nancy A. Nasher, David J. Haemisegger, Grace Cook, Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins, District 14 Councilmembers Paul Ridley and Jamie Resendez.

The evening began with a champagne cocktail reception featuring the David Washburn Jazz Band playing New Orleans-style jazz on the Meyerson’s radial staircase. When the time came to transition to dinner service members of the DSO Young Musicians, playing “Oh When the Saints Go Marching In,” led a second-line-style procession down the steps and through the lobby with the Means and Johnsons trailing behind with umbrellas waiving above their heads signaling to guests that it was time to enter the dining area and be seated for an elegant dinner sponsored by Charles Schwab. The New Orleans theme continued with a Creole-inspired menu including filet of beef, blackened gulf prawns, asparagus, dauphinoise potatoes and tri-colored carrots.

After dinner, guests moved into the Eugene McDermott Concert Hall to enjoy Lang Lang in his first appearance with the DSO orchestra since the 2016 DSO Gala, the sold-out concert sponsored by Capital One. Dallas Symphony Association (DSA) Chair of the Board of Governors Cece Smith thanked the 1700 concert attendees saying, “The Dallas Symphony has long been at the heart of Dallas’s cultural identity, shaping our city’s growth into the vibrant international destination it is today. Tonight, we express our deep gratitude to every one of you. Your generous support enables us to continue our artistic, community, and educational initiatives. We all know the transformative power of music, and with your help, we're making a lasting impact on lives across Dallas.”

Smith then introduced Michelle Miller Burns, the DSO’s new Ross Perot President & CEO, who thanked Co-Chairs Laura Harris-Means and Patrick Means for their incredible support and leadership. Burns then reminded attendees that proceeds from the evening will support the DSO’s education programs, including the Young Strings and The Kim Noltemy Young Musicians programs. The 28 Young Strings, Young Musicians and Teen Council students who were in the audience then stood and were acknowledged to thunderous applause. Before handing the mic over to the Gala’s Co-Chairs, Burns asked guests to mark their calendars for next year’s Gala, which will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Closing out the evening’s remarks were Gala Chairs Laura Harris-Means and Patrick Means who noted that, "Art and music are an integral part of a well-rounded education, and the educational programming that tonight’s event supports enhances our community and opens doors to our city’s youth that might not otherwise exist. The DSO is one of our city’s greatest treasures, and we are excited to celebrate it with you tonight."

And with that the legendary Lang Lang took to the stage on piano alongside the DSO, conducted by Music Director Fabio Luisi, where Rachmaninoff’s expressively virtuosic Second Piano Concerto was performed. Lang Lang gave two encores, Charlotte Sohy’s “Romance,” followed by his own arrangement of the Disney Hit, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”  to thunderous applause. After the performance, guests returned to the Meyerson lobby which had been magically transformed into “Club Toulouse,” an after-party experience sponsored by Charles Schwab Bank, where those with the stamina enjoyed savories, desserts and dancing to tunes spun by Endolena as DJ.

The Kessler School, a highly regarded pre-K through 8th grade private school in North Oak Cliff, is expanding its commitment to early childhood education with the opening of its brand-new Early Childhood Center (TKS ECC). Slated to open its doors on November 4th, TKS ECC will provide high-quality, year-round childcare for children ages 3 months to 3 years, offering local families an exceptional early childhood education experience.

Located at the school's new campus, TKS ECC will operate Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with closures only on major holidays. The center is designed to foster a play-based learning environment that supports children's developmental needs during their earliest years.

“We are beyond excited about this new journey we’re about to embark on together,” said Stephanie Guerrero, Director of The Kessler School’s ECC. “I truly believe this new program will be the beginning of something special, creating many opportunities for our community to grow and foster new friendships.”

Guerrero brings more than six years of early childhood education experience to her role as director. A licensed director with extensive knowledge of early education and state regulations, she previously served as an early childcare director before joining TKS.

TKS ECC will feature four classrooms designed to create safe and engaging spaces for young learners. It will also offer a common room where children can stay active during rainy days, ensuring continuous learning and play no matter the weather.

Reflecting The Kessler School’s commitment to individualized education, the school’s ECC curriculum will emphasize learning through play, fostering cognitive, social and emotional development in children.

“We believe children learn best through play, and we’re incorporating this philosophy throughout the year,” Guerrero added.

Children enrolled in TKS ECC will also have the opportunity to seamlessly continue their educational journey into The Kessler School’s Pre-K program—potentially staying with the school through 8th grade. This continuity provides families with a consistent, high-quality educational experience from infancy to early adolescence.

Enrollment for TKS ECC will begin soon. Families are encouraged to download the Brightwheel app to create an account and stay updated. Once enrollment opens, families will be able to register directly through the app.

This expansion comes on the heels of TKS’s acquisition of the historic Cavalry Baptist Church building and grounds in Oak Cliff's Sunset Hill neighborhood. The new campus, which opened for classes in August 2023, is part of a long-term growth strategy aimed at enhancing the school’s ability to serve the evolving needs of the community.

Since its founding in 1999, The Kessler School has created a diverse community of students in the North Oak Cliff area of Dallas. Using the workshop teaching model pioneered by Columbia University’s Teachers College, the school provides high-quality, individualized pre-K-8th grade education while reflecting the diverse, creative, progressive Oak Cliff community it serves. Caution Earth

by

Gary R. Beebe, Jr.

A clever social commentary, political satire, and cautionary tale wrapped in an imaginative sci-fi reality show adventure.

Caution Earth is a new science fiction novel by Gary R. Beebe, Jr., but it is also a very funny social commentary and political satire revealing basic truths that serve as a cautionary tale.

Qunot is the executive producer of the most popular and only true reality television show on the galactic stage called Caution Earth. However, after eight successful seasons, early cancellation looms as viewer ennui is setting in with the lack of forward progress in character development. To save his job and lavish lifestyle, he’s got to stimulate the show’s story arc. He’s got two seasons left in the show’s contract, and with Earth on a short approach to societal and environmental collapse, he’s not going to fulfill his obligation. Additionally, galactic laws prevent his direct intervention (think Star Trek’s Prime Directive); Earthlings don’t know they’re the subject of the once-popular reality show or even that intelligent life exists. Qunot is caught between a rock and a hard place until he identifies the perfect patsies to put his rescue plan into effect.

The description of the planet Durnita’s entertainment industry, its movers and shakers, and their sycophants are reflective of how readers have come to view Hollywood, as are the laser-hewn images of politics and the mainstream media. Earth is characterized as having advanced its technological capabilities beyond its evolutionary development, poised on the brink of self-destruction.

The story is well-told, with insight and unceasing humor. I laughed out loud at the description of a politically manipulated cause-righteous Earthside agitator as “a douche canoe environmentalist” appropriately named “Douchious.” The aliens’ super-secret spacecraft, the Wingate, is supported by Olsen, the ship’s drama queen AI, who provides many of the funniest bits of dialogue. Geese, it turns out, are alien beings Qunot stranded on Earth centuries earlier to serve as his eyes, ears, and informants, to point him and his television crew to the most show-worthy filming opportunities, and their leader, Mr. Goose, is beyond over it. I enjoyed the author’s play on cultural references, such as the mention of George Orwell being an alien, and was intrigued by the appearance of “angel” numbers; I had to look that up. On the other hand, while the narrative is consistently clever and entertaining, there is a lot of repetition of the state of politics or the human condition, which seemed to overdo driving the plot points home, at least for me, and really slowed the story down.

I recommend CAUTION EARTH to readers of science fiction, political satire, and social commentary.

The Art of Farming

by

T.D. Motley

Warm and homey farm life of a retired art professor.

The Art of Farming is a new novel by T.D. Motley tells the story of an artist and former art professor’s second career following in the footsteps of his family as a farmer in North Texas. The narrative is warm and welcoming, imparting the main character’s obvious love of the land, nature, and his new life, with lovely imagery and surprising comparisons from art history and other unexpected places.

Sam Barlett is a man with a diverse history. Although he came from a farming family, he pursued a career in the art world as both a working artist and a college professor. A four-year stint in the Air Force stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota further broadened his life experiences. For his encore, he’s developed a small farm in North Texas, growing and selling organic herbs and specialty vegetables. While officially retired from teaching art, he still creates his own and opens his farm up twice a year to visits from the local college art classes to learn about painting landscapes.

Farming is a 24/7, 52-weeks-a-year occupation, especially when raising livestock as well as growing crops. There is a menagerie on the farm, including a pack of well-loved dogs. Sam shares the sad story of losing a special dog, Murph, and it is absolutely like hearing about the death of a family member.

The author includes details about the varieties of herbs and vegetables Sam grows or experiments with, and there are some extremely tantalizing discussions of how they are used in cooking. Sam’s partner, Annie, is a writer who researches food for her articles and an in-progress cookbook. She travels to locations where the cuisine featured can be authentically experienced but experiments with what she’s learned once she’s back home at the farm, leading to additions to the farm’s crop list.

Sam often talks about artists whose work comes to mind when he’s describing his new life, chores, or the views he has on his property. Readers shouldn’t be surprised that Sam’s descriptions are vivid and evocative; he’s speaking from his heart and through the eyes of an artist. In addition, many intriguing facts pop up throughout the book, and I was frequently compelled to pause my reading and Google more about them. The topics were as diverse as an artist mentioned or objects such as an artist’s “donkey” or even the familiar Strategic Air Command. These searches, of course, inevitably led down rabbit hole after rabbit hole. I learned so much and enjoyed every minute.

I recommend THE ART OF FARMING to readers interested in real farming (not hobby farming), rural life, organic gardening, and living a fulfilling retirement.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the author through Lone Star Book Blog Tours.
