Junior Achievement of Dallas (JA Dallas) is proud to announce Palak Patel as the 2025 JA Dallas Student of the Year. A senior at Plano East Senior High School, Patel was selected from a competitive pool of more than 100 applicants for her outstanding academic achievements, leadership and commitment to community impact. As part of this prestigious recognition, Patel will receive the Sandi Smith Scholarship, a $10,000 award to support her higher education journey in college and pursuit of a career in business.

Patel has been involved with JA Dallas as a participant in the JA Career Speaker Series and as an intern with JA Dallas. In her application essay, she described the lessons she learned as an intern: “I found myself diving into projects that challenged me to think in new ways and take on responsibilities I had never expected. It wasn’t just about tasks and deadlines; it was about learning how to navigate the complex world of business and understanding the value of making smart, informed decisions.”

As the JA Dallas Student of the Year, Patel will play a key role in the upcoming Dallas Business Hall of Fame, presented by Ryan, LLC, on February 22, 2025, at the Omni Dallas Hotel. During the event, she will address an audience of business and community leaders, sharing her inspiring journey and future aspirations. The student will also be recognized at the Laureate Reception, an exclusive gathering honoring this year’s distinguished Hall of Fame Laureates: Allie Beth Allman, Curtis C. Farmer and Dale Petroskey.

The Dallas Business Hall of Fame benefiting Junior Achievement of Dallas celebrates the best and brightest in the Dallas business community who have made a meaningful impact in the region. Now in its 27th year, the gala raises essential funds to support Junior Achievement’s mission to inspire and prepare young people for success in a global economy.

St. Andrew Prom Closet Now accepting donations of dresses, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and wraps!

MAKING PROM DREAMS COME TRUE:

16th Annual St. Andrew Prom Closet: Feb. 18 – March 1, 2025

Now collecting donations of dresses, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and wraps

The fairy godmothers of The St. Andrew Prom Closet announce that the 16th Annual Prom Closet is scheduled for Feb. 18-20 and 22 and Feb. 24 – March 1, 2025, at St. Andrew Methodist Church in Plano. Girls from ANYWHERE in need of a prom dress are invited to come select a dress and accessories - all at no cost. Donations of dresses (sizes 0-30), jewelry, shoes, handbags, and wraps are needed.

“This month we begin asking for the community’s help in providing donations of dresses and accessories,” said Devra Helffrich, a founder of the St. Andrew Prom Closet, which was created to provide a unique shopping experience for young ladies who because of finances would be unable to attend prom. “Start the New Year with a clean closet and bring us your gently used dresses as well as shoes, jewelry, and handbags! We also have an option to purchase items for the girls through our Amazon shopping link, which will be on the Prom Closet website. Each year, we depend on donations from individuals, local groups and businesses to provide the many items needed to complete each girl’s prom ensemble.”

For shoppers, appointments are required to improve the overall experience and minimize wait times. Online registration for shoppers as well as volunteers begins Jan. 23. Visit standrewmethodist.org/prom closet. Each shopper must be present to select her own dress and accessories and may have one guest, age 16 or older. A volunteer will assist each girl throughout the process, and there will be 40 shopping spots per each 90-minute time slot.

Prom Closet, a service of the St. Andrew Methodist Women, provides prom attire to approximately 1,000 high school girls each year. While the need is great, the impact the dress makes on the girl and her family is immeasurable. When Prom Closet first began in 2009, 35 girls from local high schools received dresses and accessories. In 2024, 1,073 girls from 213 schools and 103 school districts received dresses and accessories. Over the years, Prom Closet has welcomed girls from across Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma as well as exchange students from Germany, Poland, Switzerland, and Thailand. A total of 941 volunteers came together last year to help make prom dreams come true.

“For the St. Andrew Methodist Women, Prom Closet is a year-round labor of love,” said Rev. Arthur Jones, senior pastor, St. Andrew. “This dedicated group of women, combined with the many volunteers who make it happen each year, know its value. Each volunteer strives to provide an uplifting experience by letting the young ladies know they are loved, and they are beautiful. The Prom Closet has grown into such an incredible outreach program in North Texas and beyond because of the love and hard work of our volunteers. Words are not enough to thank them for going above and beyond each year to make prom dreams come true.”

All donations may be dropped off at St. Andrew, 1401 Mira Vista Blvd., just inside the church’s north entry doors on a designated dress rack. Look for the covered walkway leading to the entrance and see the website for specific drop-off hours. To sign up to volunteer, shop or find out more information, visit standrewmethodist.org/promcloset. For any questions, call the Prom Closet informational hotline at 469-385-1810, or email standrewpromcloset@gmail.com.

“Prom Closet needs many volunteers, and we hope you will consider signing up,” added Helffrich. “It is such a joyful and heartwarming place, and there are volunteer positions to suit every individual from set-up to check-in and check-out, to serving as personal shoppers for the girls. Join us!”

Deathwish

Superhero, #2

by

Justin Richman

Fast-paced and exciting, Adam's a regular guy with superhuman ability, and his story may be better than the debut of the super series.

Adam's body has the unexplainable ability to heal itself almost instantaneously, and he's been supplementing his income from his retail position by fighting for money in the alley behind his best friend's bar. But one night, after an encounter in Decker City with the vigilante crimefighter known as The Gray Hood, he begins to consider the possibility that he, too, could put his special ability to better use. After he loses his day job, he goes on a ride-along with a police friend, Lt. Shane Cranston, and Adam's smitten: he wants to fight crime.

At this time, Decker City is a hotbed of violence and criminal activity, but Adam's hometown, nearby Mapleton, is fairly quiet until Adam and Shane get involved in some of Decker City's investigations. Suddenly, both their lives are on the line, and Adam is finding out firsthand how much damage his body can take and still come back.

Deathwish is the second novel in author Justin Richman's great new Superhero series, and I believe it is even better than his debut outing. It's a fast-paced, exciting, and entertaining story about a regular guy with a superhuman ability to heal even his most grievous wounds instantly. Adam was dealt a tough hand when the ability was discovered and has really been on his own his whole life. I really liked the clever and snarky guy, even his (at times) "Dad joke" dialogue. He's an extrovert and ready to take action, shake things up, and make things work. I loved that he jumped into action even as bullets were flying, knowing absolutely nothing about what he was doing or heading into. I laughed out loud quite a bit and would have read this book cover to cover in one sitting if I hadn't had to deal with real life.

As in Richman's first Superhero book, there are some great secondary and supporting characters. Shane Cranston, Adam's friendly connection in the Mapleton PD, is a nice guy who is good at this job and genuinely tries to help the wayward Adam find his way. The same can be said for Adam's best friend, Chuck, who is the only other person who knows Adam's secret. I liked Adam's flirtation with Kate Phillips and would love to see that go somewhere for Adam. However, there is a particularly interesting lock-picking officer, Liz McKenzie, who would be fun to get to know better.

I also enjoyed the crossover between this and book one, The Silver Hood. Usually, a series will maintain the same setting throughout, but in the second Superhero book, we're actually in a nearby city. It was interesting to see the towns all used the same radio dispatcher until Decker City got so busy and crime-riddled that they had to set up a separate system. It was reasonably true to life regarding the lack of cooperation and exchange of information that can arise between agencies. I appreciated that the author didn't let Shane and Adam "poach" on Decker City's jurisdiction without the DC PD initially asking for assistance and, later, the two rightfully anticipating repercussions for overstepping.

The action in the story is steady, with exciting, almost frantic moments regularly kicking the pace up a notch (to "Eleven"). A major plot twist made me exclaim aloud; I was that surprised. There is a bit of a cliffhanger ending, and there are still some shadowy things and people lurking in the background that predict this author has much more planned! There is also an intriguing explanation for how Adam acquired his unique healing ability.

With its entertaining premise and non-stop excitement and action, I recommend DEATHWISH to readers who enjoy fantastic superhero tales. (This book has some death and destruction and drinking, but no drugs or "kissing scenes," if that is a consideration for sharing with a younger audience.)

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from Reedsy Discovery.
