Please Consider Helping the Heard Animal Ambassadors This North Texas Giving Day

North Texas Giving Day

North Texas Giving Day is tomorrow (Thursday, September 18)!

This year, we aim to raise at least $30,000 to help cover the cost of exceptional care and veterinary treatment that each of the 75 animal ambassadors in our care receives. With your help, we can meet this goal!

So far, over 30 supporters have helped us meet this goal during Early Giving. Our board of directors has also pledged to match over $12,000 in donations from the public. We really appreciate each gift! All donations will help us get closer to this goal and we are grateful for your support. We also appreciate your help in spreading the word about our project.

Thank you to all of the generous supporters who have contributed to this goal so far!

About Heard Animal Ambassadors

All animals residing at the Heard under human care are unable to survive in the wild and therefore non-releasable. Each has a unique story, but they all rely on the Heard for a home. Otherwise, the alternative is typically euthanasia.

These animals act as ambassadors for their wild counterparts, helping us fulfill our mission to educate and inspire by connecting people with the natural world. And, by providing a permanent home for these animal ambassadors, rehabbers we work with also have more opportunities to provide care to additional animals in need.

Read below to learn more about a few of our animal ambassadors. Thank you for your consideration and support. Additional information is available below or here.

Meet A Few Animal Ambassadors

Pudge and Poe are Eastern Screech Owls and came to live at the Heard in 2013. Though they arrived at the same time, they both came from different situations that led to injury of one of their eyes.

Eastern Screech Owl Pudge

Pudge was found in the mouth of an English Mastiff (although it’s unknown if that caused the eye injury). Poe was found on the side of the road, after, presumably, being hit by a vehicle. Because of these injuries that would limit their ability to take care of themselves, they were deemed non-releasable.

Easter Screech Owl Poe

You may notice that they are two different colors. That’s because Eastern Screech Owls have two common color morphs, gray and rufous (red). Pudge is rufous and Poe is gray.

Coatimundi North Texas Giving Day

Project Background

The 75 animals under our care receive the highest standard of care, meeting or exceeding all standards for their species set by USDA, Texas Parks and Wildlife, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and others. Veterinary services and the daily care are cornerstones of maintaining the health and well-being of our animals, ensuring that they thrive. But it is expensive.

While we continue to provide exceptional care, veterinary costs for routine check-ups, emergency treatments, and specialized care are considerable and ever-increasing. Additionally, each animal requires a specialized diet and daily care routine. By supporting our Animal Care Fund, you are directly contributing to the health and happiness of these animals. Your support helps us fulfill our deep commitment to their well-being.

For example, the annual care for just one of our Eastern Screech Owls might easily cost over $4,000 which covers things like:

  • Food: $564
  • Specialized Raptor Veterinary Care: $50
  • Expert Veterinary Ophthalmology Care: $150
  • Medications (her prescription eye drops): $135
  • Raptor-specific care equipment: $50
  • Enrichment items such as perches, dust baths, and natural substrate: $100
  • Specially trained staff time: $3100.00
  • State and Federal Permit and Licensing Fees: $250

About North Texas Giving Day

Your donation goes further with bonus funds and prizes when you give through this link. Our board of directors has also committed a $12,000+ matching gift. With your help this North Texas Giving Day, we will be able to continue our mission to bring nature and people together.

About Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

Founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard at the age of 80, Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary consists of a 289-acre nature preserve and a natural science museum with the mission to educate and inspire by connecting people with the natural world. In a time when the rate of expansion of the Metroplex was slower than today, Miss Bessie foresaw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature.

Your support through financial and in-kind contributions will help ensure the Heard will be sustained for future generations to enjoy. We also appreciate you sharing our information with your friends and family! Because the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, any gifts made are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

The Coppell Cowboys and Cowgirls cross-country teams competed at the Lovejoy XC Fall Festival on Saturday, September 13, facing hot weather and a tough course at Myers Park in McKinney. The challenging conditions made the meet a true test of endurance and provided a valuable opportunity for many of Coppell’s younger runners to gain experience. Despite the heat and hills, several athletes turned in strong performances and showed steady growth with District just weeks away.

Cowboys Highlights

  • Varsity Boys Elite – Tanish Neelapu led the way with a strong time of 16:30, finishing 36th overall.
  • Varsity Boys Open – Rodrigo Abrego ran his first race of the year and placed 34th in a crowded field.
  • JV Elite Boys – Coppell earned 4th place overall, led by standout performances from Rigved Nehere, Abishek Suresh, and Farhan Mohammed.
  • JV Boys – Nolan Reeder paced Coppell with a 28th-place individual finish, helping the team to a 6th-place result.

Cowgirls Highlights

  • Varsity Girls Elite – Finleigh Sanders was Coppell’s top finisher, placing 56th in 20:26.
  • JV Girls – Shrriya Bedse and Vanini Agarwal were Coppell’s top runners in their division.

Coach’s Perspective

Coach Wren reflected, “This was the toughest course to date that we have run. We learned a lot about ourselves. We have a better feel for the importance of training and having a good race plan. The course also challenged us to work on having a tougher mental mindset.

With only two meets left before District, it’s important that we continue to become stronger and smarter runners. I look forward to seeing how our JV runners handle the Lewisville course this week and how the Varsity runners compete against some of the best teams in the state at the Nike meet in College Station.”

Looking Ahead

Next up, Coppell will race at the Lewisville XC meet, where the JV teams will test themselves on a new course. Varsity will then take on some of the toughest competition in Texas at the Nike South Invitational in College Station.

Until next time, Coppell Cross Country will keep pushing forward!

The Friends of the Dallas Public Library (FoDPL) is proud to support one of the many ways our Libraries serve as vital community hubs. This fall, the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library is transforming into a place where every child can share in the joy of Halloween, no matter their family’s circumstances.

Throughout September, students in grades K-5 are invited to visit the Library’s Scarytale Closet to pick out a Halloween costume completely free of charge. With the Scarytale Closet, the Library is opening doors for children across Dallas to experience the magic of Halloween together, strengthening our community and creating a brighter season.

We invite the community to donate and support the cause. It not only gives a costume to a deserving family but also helps the Library continue its mission of meeting community needs, from literacy and lifelong learning to providing free resources, safe spaces, and programs.

Help stock the Scarytale Closet by shopping the FoDPL Amazon wishlist at bit.ly/ScarytaleWishlist, or by donating directly to the FoDPL at bit.ly/ScarytaleDonation.

Established in 1950, the Friends of the Dallas Public Library (FoDPL) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports the mission of the Dallas Public Library by working to achieve excellence in the Library’s delivery of resources, services, and information to the Dallas community. Momo Arashima Breaks the Mirror of the Sun

Momo Arashima, #2

by

Misa Sugiura

A great adventure to share with the younger readers you know.

Since saving her mom and foiling the plans of a demon king intent on taking over our world, Momo should have been basking in her friendship with Danny. However, Danny has had other plans, spending time with the cool kids from school, including Ryleigh and her posse of mean girls. But when kids start going missing, it’s up to Momo and her friends to thwart the plans of another mythical being, Tamamo-no-mae, a mean girl of myth and legend.

Momo Arashima Breaks the Mirror of the Sun is the second book in Misa Sugiura's splendid middle-grade fantasy series. However, don't let the middle-grade assignment fool you; this book (and series) is fun for the entire family.

While the plot is fast-paced and the mythology intriguing, it is the main character, Momo, that really has me championing this entire series. Momo is a seventh-grade middle-schooler and so relatable. Even after her successes in the series debut, she's a little awkward and is still quite insecure about the mean girls and their followers, though things are improving. Momo's internal dialogue is often laugh-out-loud-funny and fresh. She's game to put everything on the line for others. What ensues is a great adventure, and young readers will realize through Momo's growth that it is best just to be themselves. As mentioned, this is the second book in the series, and the books should be read in order of publication for the best enjoyment.

With its highly likable and engaging characters, fun dialogue, the inclusion of current pop cultural references, and a story with non-stop action, I recommend MOMO ARASHIMA BREAKS THE MIRROR OF THE SUN to older elementary or middle-grade readers who enjoy stories with fantasy, magic, and mythical creatures, fans of the Percy Jackson series, and perhaps those who enjoyed the Nickelodeon series, AVATAR: The Last Airbender.

Momo Arashima Steals the Sword of the Wind

Momo Arashima, #1

by

Misa Sugiura

Non-stop action with magic and mythical beings and creatures will tempt even reluctant readers to fall into the story.

When twelve-year-old Momo Arashima discovers that all the stories of mythical beings and supernatural spirits that her Japanese mother had told her when she was very young were true, she is shocked and dismayed. She had drawn unwanted attention and ridicule at school early on for believing the fantastical tales and had emotionally demanded that her disappointed mother stop telling her those make-believe stories as if they were real. Now she hears that her mother is actually an Earth goddess from the Island of Mysteries and is responsible for keeping the evil spirits and demons from crossing into the world. But the portal between the land of the dead and this one has been breached. Hundreds of demons and worse have made their way onto the island, and the more that enter, the sicker her mother physically becomes. Finding out she is the only one able to stop the monsters, Momo joins a magical talking fox named Niko and her childhood friend, Danny, on a mission to save her mother and the world.

Momo Arashima Steals the Sword of the Wind is the first book in author Misa Sugiura's new middle-grade fantasy series featuring the twelve-year-old heroine from the title. Hands down, this is one of the top books I've read this year, and I feel it is sure to be a hit with middle-grade students, including reluctant readers. As the mother of three boys who all needed coaxing to complete independent reading requirements at that age, I wish this book had been available back then! The story would be a fabulous read-aloud selection.

Momo has had a tough childhood. Not only had she lost her father, but her mother had also been swamped with grief and, eventually, illness. To top off her misery, Momo has been besieged by cool-kid bullies at school because she's seen as "different." The bullying hurts even more when her childhood friend, Danny, is one of the group. It is extremely important at that age to feel like you belong; most readers will relate to Momo's experience. Perhaps, even more important, Momo's plight will strike a chord with young readers that bullying and cruel jokes hurt. Our heroine rises above her mistreatment, but she also stands up for herself.

The story is fantastic, and its fast pace moves things along like a runaway rollercoaster. It captured my attention from the start, and I didn't want to put the book down until I was finished. With the recent popularity and interest in Asian culture, the story, with its modern take on Japanese mythology, couldn't come at a better time. The fantastical elements are fresh, unusual, scary, and perfect for igniting young imaginations. The awesome cover art already has me hoping for this to become an animated series.

The trio travels to many magical places while on their quest for the tools to succeed in their ultimate showdown. Real cities, in addition to those of myth and legend, are visited and will please readers familiar with those locations. They may begin to imagine running into some of the magical beings or evil minions, just as Momo, Danny, and Niko did.

With its highly likable and engaging characters, fun dialogue, the inclusion of current pop cultural references, and a story with non-stop action, I recommend MOMO ARASHIMA STEALS THE SWORD OF THE WIND to older elementary or middle-grade readers who enjoy stories with fantasy, magic, and mythical creatures, fans of the Percy Jackson series, and perhaps those who enjoyed the Nickelodeon series, AVATAR: The Last Airbender.

Dr. Erica Teixeira takes the reins as the leader of comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. Dr. Fabricio Teixeira is the new leader of endodontics.

Drs. Erica and Fabricio Teixeira joined Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in July in leadership roles. Erica Teixeira takes the leadership reins of comprehensive dentistry and Fabricio Teixeira is the dental college’s new head of endodontics.

Previously, they served as department executive officers of operative dentistry and endodontics, respectively, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics in Iowa City.

We are fortunate to recruit two outstanding faculty to lead distinct departments at A&M Dentistry,Dr. Lily T. García, dean, said. It is especially true that the timing of having two executive leadership searches for two different department heads – the departments of Comprehensive Dentistry and Endodontics – created a unique opportunity for both highly-respected faculty leaders.

Erica Teixeira is a third-generation dentist. In her new role, she oversees the education of more than 400 dental students who care for patients under the supervision of licensed faculty. The Department of Comprehensive Dentistry also includes 10 residents in the three-year advanced education program in prosthodontics and three in the advanced education in general dentistry program.

Erica Teixeira plans to collaborate with faculty and staff to strengthen our educational programs, implementing evidence-based practice approaches and innovation. “I look forward to serving at Texas A&M University, where so much growth is happening.”

The program welcomed 21 new part-time and full-time faculty members, including recent Texas A&M graduates in prosthodontics.

“We are here to serve the community,” she said. “I would like the public to see us and know we are the place for top dental care.”

Erica Teixeira replaces Dr. Bernard J. Hennessy, who retired in July

Comprehensive dentistry focuses on the overall health of a patient, rather than problems as they arise. It includes an examination of the entire mouth, including teeth, gums and supporting structures, to avoid future dental problems and promote long-term oral health.

In addition to her role as department executive officer at Iowa, Erica Teixeira served as an associate professor and was named a professor in 2024. Prior to that, she was an assistant professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for six years.

A fellow of the International College of Dentists, she’s an alumna of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program. Erica Teixeira also serves on the American Dental Association Council of Scientific Affairs and is vice chair of the ADA Seal committee. She’s president-elect of the Women in Science Network of the International Association for Dental Research, and a CODA site visitor.

Fabricio Teixeira was recruited after an 11-year tenure at Iowa, where he chaired the endodontics department and held the Richard E. Walton Endowed Professorship. He also served as director of the advanced program for more than four years.

Fabricio Teixeira was invited to speak in 2024 at Texas A&M’s Dean’s Distinguished Lecturer Series in Dallas and visited with García, a colleague from both the UTHSCSA and the University of Iowa. Before his tenure at Iowa, he was an associate professor and residency program director at UTHSCSA, the same school where Fabricio Teixeira earned his endodontic certificate.

Endodontics is a dental specialty dedicated to diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases of the dental pulp and surrounding tissues. Root canal specialists aim to preserve natural teeth and maintain oral health.

At this stage in my academic career, I seek to work with someone I know and trust,” he said. I am confident in Dean García’s leadership and her ability to advance the school. Having worked with her at two respected institutions, I can attest to her professionalism. I am committed to serving my peers in endodontics and the broader college community.

García became A&M’s 17th dental college dean in October 2022. In addition to hiring the Teixeiras, she recruited new leaders for public health sciences and biomedical sciences over the past year.

Dr. Deborah Foyle has served as interim department head of endodontics since September 2022 and continues in the same role for the periodontics department.

I appreciate Dr. Foyle’s dedication and her efforts in supporting the department and providing valuable insights into its operations,” Fabricio Teixeira said.

The 27-month endodontics certificate program includes eight graduate students. The program is recognized for its research achievements, and Fabricio Teixeira highlighted the strong leadership of Drs. Poorya Jalali, clinical associate professor and program director, and Jordan Schweitzer, clinical associate professor and predoctoral program director.

“I am committed to supporting the department and advancing A&M’s presence at national and international forums,” he said. We will achieve this together.”

Fabricio Teixeira has held several positions with the American Association of Endodontists and serves as secretary of the International Association of Dental Traumatology, also sitting on its board of directors. He’s also a CODA Commissioner and chairs the Endodontics Review Committee.
