The AWARE membership meeting and luncheon featured speakers Kristen Kennedy, PhD and Chandramallika Basak, PhD, both at the University of Texas at Dallas Center for Vital Longevity and AWARE Grant Recipients providing research updates.
        
After a welcome by AWARE president, Karen Koop and board updates, the speakers began their very interesting presentations.
        
Dr. Kennedy’s grant will be put towards a pilot study in her Neuroimaging of Aging and Cognition Lab to use ultra-high field (7T) imaging and spectroscopy to investigate age and biomarker-related differences in neurometabolites, which are metabolites found in the brain as a result of neural activity. Dr. Kennedy's lab is testing the theory that Alzheimer's disease is caused in part by a severe decline in the brain's energy system. Her research is examining neurometabolites using advanced MRI scanners.
        
Dr. Basak’s Lifespan Neuroscience and Cognition Lab will be using the grant to purchase a mobile fNIRS (functional Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy) system which will allow her lab to collect neuroimaging data from a more diverse pool of participants. This mobile Functional Near Infared Spectroscopy with physiological measures will be used to assess brain physiology in adults, allowing for a broader range of study participants.

AWARE Dallas 2023-2024 Grant Recipients

Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation:  Salary support for the Baylor AT&T Memory Center to provide a trained care-navigation specialist on site at the Center.  At the point of care, patients and families are provided with disease education, caregiver training and support groups, elder law and financial planning, and a 24/7 helpline.

Bishop Arts Theatre Center:  Support for a program offering senior/elder adults customized theatre workshops and performances to enhance their social, emotional, and physical memory abilities.

Center For BrainHealth at The University Of Texas At Dallas:  Support for the creation of a BrainHealth Help Line to offer guidance to caregivers and those with Alzheimer's who are seeking information and tools to help them move out of a place of distress.

For Love And Art:  Support to increase staff needed to coordinate volunteers, and assist with growth for a program bringing an interactive art experience to people with cognitive impairment and limited mobility living in long-term care facilities.

Jewish Family Service:   Support for the Older Adults Program staff to provide in-home mental health counseling, care management, and daily living support to older adults with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, allowing them to remain living in their own home.

Juliette Fowler Communities:   Support the organization's campus-wide dementia care initiatives including I'm Still Here, Dementia Friendly Dallas, music therapy, and Caregiver support programs.

Plano Symphony Orchestra:   Support for Healing Notes, a free music therapy-influenced concert designed as an interactive musical experience for seniors. The program focuses on low-income individuals living in memory care facilities and dealing with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. 

Stomping Ground Theater And Training Center:   Support for Improv for Caregivers, a fun and interactive program for family and professional caregivers that uses improvisational comedy techniques to teach effective communication skills that are specific to the needs of persons with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Texas Winds Musical Outreach:   Support for the Concerts for Seniors program providing interactive concerts in 86 nursing homes and adult day care facilities bringing joy, relief from isolation, and peace to individuals affected by memory loss, and providing new communication skills to their caregivers.

The Senior Source:   Support for the Senior Companion Program matching trained volunteers with low-income individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families needing in-home assistance with meals, errands, and light housekeeping, providing caregivers with respite and/or time to work outside the home. 

The University Of Texas At Dallas Center For Vital Longevity:   Support for testing the theory that Alzheimer’s disease is caused in part by a severe decline in the brain's energy system by examining neurometabolites using MRI scanning on one of seven such advanced MRI scanners in the country. Wilshire Baptist Church:   Support for the Friday Friends Program providing stimulating activities for participants living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias and respite for their caregivers. 

Myrna D. Schlegel Aware Scholarship Fund:   Scholarship support for nursing students at Baylor University, Texas Woman’s University, and Texas Christian University toward studies in gerontology, especially in the field of dementia.

Shop smart and Donate smart!  Goodwill Dallas is making sustainability simple during this Earth Month by encouraging everyone to repurpose, recycle and reuse. Goodwill Dallas stores will receive donations of clothing, household items and electronics to help divert these from landfills.

In honor of May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI North Texas, a chartered affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and NAMI Texas, is raising awareness of mental illness and supporting individuals in their mental health journey. This year, NAMI North Texas is emphasizing the importance of normalizing mental health care through Take the Moment, the 2024 Mental Health Awareness Month campaign. Activities to support Mental Health Awareness Month include the lighting of Downtown Dallas Buildings and the annual NAMIWalks North Texas fundraiser.

“It is essential to foster an open and safe environment for sharing stories, and during Mental Health Awareness Month, we are calling on mental health advocates across the country to come together and address the stigma around mental health by providing testimonies and offering support,” states Dr. Athena Trentin, Executive Director of NAMI North Texas. “Take the Moment encourages individuals to prioritize and talk about their mental well-being without feeling guilty or ashamed. Our upcoming activities further emphasize our initiative.”

One of the activities in May includes Downtown Dallas buildings that will light up in green to kick off Mental Health Awareness Week. In collaboration with the City of Dallas, on Monday, May 13, this special honor by building owners will shine light on the fact that each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. It also will shine light on the importance to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. Participating buildings include Reunion Tower, Bank of America, and One AT&T Plaza.

On Saturday, May 18 beginning at 9:30 a.m., NAMI North Texas will hold its annual fundraiser, NAMIWalks North Texas, at Riders Field in Frisco. The pet-friendly event includes a resource fair, activities for kids, and free parking. There is no registration fee for the walk. All participants are encouraged to collect donations from family members, friends, co-workers, business associates, and other mental health advocates. All walkers raising $100 or more receive a NAMIWalks North Texas event t-shirt and other recognition gifts. Depot on Main

Merriman Anderson Architects (MAA) announces the completion of a multifamily project in Burleson, Texas, called The Depot on Main. The project features two five-story apartment buildings totaling 275 units and amenities such as a pool with dining areas and grills; a fitness center with retractable garage windows to create an indoor and outdoor space; rooftop deck lounge which includes a pool table and bar space that opens onto an outdoor entertainment terrace; locally painted brick murals that tie into the surrounding old town district; a coworking lounge with a private conference room, booth seating with integrated power, various lounge seating groups throughout, and a coffee bar. The property also provides six Live/Work units on the ground floor with sidewalk access. MAA provided architecture, interior design, and FF&E services.

The Depot on Main is conveniently located adjacent to the Old Town district of Burleson at the northwest corner of King and Main streets, only a five-minute walk to numerous restaurants and retail stores. Inspired by the town’s historic railway, MAA implemented a modern industrial design style with black finishes, and materials such as wood, dark metal and steel warmed with brick featured throughout the space. Linear lights replicating train lights, a train depot station wall covering and subtle nods to the Old Town district of Burleson were also incorporated in the public areas through artwork and accessories.

One and two-bedroom unit options ranging in size from 590 to 1,229 square feet are available with quartz countertops and high-end appliances, as well as two different unit design schemes. One of the schemes features lighter finishes, and the other darker finishes, both coinciding with the rest of the buildings’ design. 

“It was important to our team to provide residents with a space that connects to the surrounding community and rich history of Burleson and is a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing place to live,” says Milton Anderson, President of Merriman Anderson Architects. “We are thrilled to see that goal come to fruition in The Depot on Main.”

Realty Capital Residential is the developer, and Muckleroy & Falls is the contractor for the project.

Margaret’s, the three-meal ranch-to-table restaurant at JW Marriott Dallas Arts District, unveils both an all-new dry aged beef program and spring inspired dishes to its breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus. The restaurant’s location on the hotel’s 11th floor offers prime views of the Dallas Arts District and surrounding skyline, providing a memorable backdrop for business lunches, dinner before performances in surrounding venues, and brunch before strolling through local museums.

Beginning April 11, guests may experience Executive Chef Jonah Freidmann’s most anticipated addition to Margaret’s offerings, the new dry aged beef program. Aged for 35 days in house, each Texas-grown beef dish is served with a bone marrow twice baked mashed potato , served in the bone, in addition to accompaniments associated with traditional sauces and serving styles. Dry age options include the Diane, the Au Poivre, the Oscar and the Florentine, for which the aging process can be viewed in a fully automatic, self-sustaining glass-front dry aging chamber lined with Himalayan salt located in the restaurant’s dining room.

“Dry aged beef is a must try for every Texan especially as grilling season approaches, and we’re proud to introduce this new section of our menu that has been a vision for Margaret’s since the beginning,” Chef Friedmann said. “Our Dry Ager USA system allows guests to witness the process of aging which tenderizes and adds umami to the flavor of the steak; this is a well loved technique for a reason that you typically associate with steakhouses. These dishes are a great compliment to our composed, artistically inspired menu for those who want a steak - and want it prepared the best way possible.”

Chef Friedmann has also designed new appetizers, entrees and desserts for each of the restaurant’s menus utilizing locally sourced ingredients and herbs and produce grown on site in the JW Garden, either in planters located outside at Vincent’s Sky Bar or in the hydroponic FarmShelf unit, both pruned and harvested by Chef Friedmann and his team. 

Guests may begin their dinner with vegetarian spring hand rolls, fresh Bloomsdale spinach crepes filled with locally grown mushrooms from Texas Fungus, spring potatoes, heirloom lettuce and a delicate peanut sauce or a spring tomatoburrata with smoked peach, chamomile tomato tea, and basil.

Dinner menu highlights include the poached lobster, served atop aji amarillo and chorizo oat risotto with courgette, white currant, charred asparagus and drizzled lightly with marigold oil, and emberred quail, a nettle mussolini stuffed quail served with braised leeks and huckleberry-elderflower glaze. The coconut and curry vermicelli is another delicious vegan option added to the menu featuring spring farm vegetables, marble potatoes, vadouvan and Texas Fungus mushrooms. 

New additions to the lunch menu include a smoked tomato gazpacho complete with crab salad, marcona almonds and a drizzle of chili crisp, a southwest chicken wrap served in a chipotle tortilla, reuben sandwich with wagyu pastrami, and an elevated fish and chips with beer battered halibut served alongside spiced gaufrette potatoes, charred lemon, slaw and bearnaise aioli for dipping. 

The strategic partnerships with local vendors, farms, and ranches continue as the restaurant approaches its first anniversary in July. Beef partners include 44 Farms, Wagyu X, and Allen Brothers and bagels enjoyed during breakfast and brunch are baked fresh daily at Lubbie’s Bagels in East Dallas. Desserts served during lunch include slices of pie from Emporium Pies and a selection of gelatos from Botolino Gelato, both Dallas founded, owned and operated businesses. 

“The combination of ingredients grown on site and within an eighty mile radius of the hotel allow us to provide our guests with an eclectic variety of dishes with an undeniably Texan influence,” Friedmann added. “I hope our guests are able to immerse themselves in the cuisine through our open design, centerpiece finishing station, and the dry aging and FarmShelf units which allow them to see their meals created from start to finish.”

Margaret’s is nestled amidst the Dallas skyline, ideally located in the heart of the United States’ largest contiguous arts district. Floor to ceiling windows along the perimeter of the space offer ideal views of the surrounding neighborhood though views around sunset are particularly stunning. The restaurant includes a soft seating lounge, 20-seat bar, and private dining space ideal for hosting meaningful moments with family or colleagues in spring and summer months.

III Forks Chef Proprietor Chris Vogeli has long been known as one of Texas’ most knowledgeable creators of fabulous steaks and chops. However, the culinary all-star also has a wide-ranging repertoire of European cuisine, having trained on the continent following culinary school. At 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, Vogeli will join Executive Chef Datsun Jarrett in hosting a wine dinner dedicated to the flavors of Spain.

Guests at the wine dinner will enjoy six courses that promise to tantalize the tastebuds and transport diners to the vibrant culinary landscape of Spain. Each course is expertly paired with a classic Spanish wine.

Spring has sprung, and Galleria Dallas is celebrating with Sounds of Spring, a weeklong event in which local choirs, bands, thespians, cheerleaders and dancers will perform in the center. Concerts and performances will take place on Level 1 across from Zara. Groups participating include the Texas Ballet Theater School, Booker T. Washington Jazz Singers, The Dallas Unity String Orchestra and the Woodrow Wilson Jazz Band and Jazz Singers.
