JFS Woman to Woman Luncheon LUNCHEON CO-CHAIRS: Barbara Spigel, Robbie Repp, Fran Toubin, Sam Utay, Susan Kramer.

More than 1,000 guests in bright spring colors and floral attire filled the room at the Fairmont Dallas on April 18 for the Jewish Family Service (JFS) garden party-themed Woman to Woman Luncheon, featuring renowned makeup artist and entrepreneur Bobbi Brownas headliner. Brown shared her mission of empowering women to “feel confident in their skin” and her passion to help them achieve this goal.

Board Chair Eric Goldberg kicked off the luncheon with special thanks to the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, and the many family and community foundations, corporate and individual donors, and the board and staff.  Cantor Vicky Glikin, Temple Emanu-El, led a powerful invocation emphasizing that the Jewish community is about loving one another “even when we disagree.”

Luncheon Co-Chairs Susan Kramer, Bobbie Repp, Barbara Spigel, Fran Toubin, and Sam Utay took the stage, led by Utay, who highlighted their connections to JFS, including utilizing adoption services, serving on the board, accessing resources for an aging loved one, supporting disaster relief efforts, or volunteering in the food pantry. She also recognized those who chaired before including the luncheon’s founding chair, Ethel Zale, and sustaining chair, Linda Garner.

A highlight of Utay’s comments included recognition of the three honorary chairs, Cathy Glick, Julie Liberman, and Beverly Rossel, who as founders of the JFS annual Diaper Shower held each October, have helped bring more than 1.5 million diapers and wipes to families in need over the past 13 years.

“These three powerhouses met while volunteering for a JFS event and were inspired by their shared experience to do more,” said Utay. “As mothers themselves, they knew firsthand the importance of having access to enough diapers to keep your child clean, dry, and healthy.”

JFS CEO Cathy Barker took the stage to share the success of JFS’ recently opened Northpoint Health Center, addressing access to healthcare disparities by providing clients with a medical home.

“Already, our chief medical officer, Dr. Heather Esquivel, is hearing stories of patients who haven’t been treated in 10 years because they either didn’t have access to a practice that would take their Medicaid, they couldn’t afford the time off work or have transportation to get to other available options, or they didn’t have any insurance,” added Barker. “The good news is they are now getting the help they need and are already improving.”

She also shared how JFS has integrated their comprehensive behavioral health services with their medical services – a best practice approach to improving overall health outcomes.

The program then turned to a tete-a-tetes chat between JFS Senior Director of Philanthropy Leah Guskin and Pam Cohen, who shared her story of mental illness and how JFS’s PLAN program impacted her life. Now a peer support specialist for the program, she shared her inspirational journey. Not only has Cohen worked in a variety of positions, she received her master’s in clinical psychology, and “can now see mental illness from both sides of the couch.” In addition, she is an author of a book, titled Bipolar Depression and Me: From Both Sides of the Couch, part memoir and part guide for those currently struggling with their illnesses.

The audience was then directed to a video about the many services and programs of JFS.

Barker then introduced moderator Cynthia Izaguirre, WFAA anchor, for a conversation with makeup artist, entrepreneur and author, Bobbi Brown.

“As founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Bobbi has not only revolutionized the cosmetics industry but has also redefined what it meant to feel confident in one’s own skin,” said Izaguirre. “Since the launch of Bobbi Brown Essentials in 1991, and with the launch of her newest brand, Jones Road Beauty, Bobbi has been on a mission to empower women to embrace their natural beauty. Her philosophy, ‘Women want to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident,’ has resonated with millions around the globe. Her latest campaign, ‘I Am Me,’ which launched today, is a celebration of what she has been preaching for nearly four decades – to know who you are; own it unapologetically and embrace every freckle and fine line.”

A few highlights from Bobbi’s conversation with Cynthia:

-        Bobbi began by saying that she felt like crying. She had met such wonderful people at the luncheon, and it felt like family, “my family.” She continued, “We were taught to care about people and do things for others – even doing something little makes you feel good.”

-        On her transition to Jones Road: “I sold my company to Estée L Lauder but stayed on as an employee for 22 years. I finally left and launched Jones Road (three years ago) on the day my 25-year non-compete was up – and in the middle of a pandemic. Everyone said not to do it.” Most recently she launched “I Am Me” – a campaign that supports knowing who you are and owning it. “It’s about consciously focusing on what you like about yourself, and embracing what makes you unique. It highlights women from all backgrounds, sharing their individual journeys to finding confidence and true happiness in their lives and in their beauty.”

-        On embracing your true self: “It’s about being confident in your skin, in your body and in your shoes so you can be the best version of yourself.”

-        She credited her grandfather Papa Sam for being her inspiration. “He moved here from Russia when he was a boy. He came without a nickel and worked his way up, eventually becoming one of the biggest car dealers in Chicago.  He wouldn’t believe all that I have gotten to experience.”

-        Keys to success: “Do what’s right for you and think about if this is what you want. Can you do other things? Consider the practical side. Can you pay the bills? Don’t be in a rush, and don’t be afraid.”

-        “I love makeup, but I don’t wear a lot. I love creating it. I love empowering people to feel better. I love the power of makeup.”

-        On grandchildren: “And you think you love your children! I’m the mother of three boys. But I love differently now. I’m so much more present.  I am happy that my family has different religions and political opinions and can all sit together at Thanksgiving … and enjoy one another.”

-        Regarding any regrets in achieving family/career balance: “There’s no such thing as balance. There’s no such thing as perfection.”

-        “I’m real, and I’m me, and I’m comfortable with who I am, and I don’t try to change that. I do want to get stronger and more flexible!  And I hope to be doing another business when I’m in my 80s.”

-        Regarding the beauty industry: “It has changed so drastically. I launched in Neiman Marcus, and I was insecure, not dressed properly, and my hair was not high enough!”

-        Role model: Richard Branson who founded an airline after sitting in coach and recognizing it was not up to par. “He wanted to make things better for people.”

-        One takeaway message for the day – “You’re OK.”

Luncheon attendees included Dawn Aaron, Candy Brown, Wende Burton, Julie Gothard, Dot Haymann, Mary Pat Higgins, Judge Clay Jenkins, Beth Konig, Elaine Pearlman, Peachy Rudberg, Lisa Sadoughi, Jaynie Schultz, Lisa Sherrod, and Donald Zale.

The biennial Woman to Woman luncheon is the largest source of unrestricted funds for JFS, raising over $5 million since its inception in 2004. Visit Jfsdallas.org.

TASTE ADDISON INVITES VISITORS TO TASTE THE ARTS MAY 31-JUNE 2

Taste Addison continues to celebrate the culinary and performing arts, and this year the famed fest is treating all your senses with the addition of the visual arts. The event has added a veritable smorgasbord of artistic experiences, with a little something for every vibe. Each day of the three-day festival, May 31-June 2, visitors can experience a wide range of artistic styles and installations. All these artistic experiences are included with a Taste Addison general admission ticket.

The roundabout drive of the Addison Conference Centre is driving creativity this year at Taste Addison with some of the region’s most talented chalk artists.  Featured artists will be onsite throughout the weekend working on their masterpieces so you can catch them in action, too!  Featured artists include:

  • Santos Lozano, a Plano-based art teacher and muralist
  • Pete Taboada, a visionary artist who creates art for seekers of self-empowerment, expansion, enlightenment and love.
  • Carissa Nalley, a full-time multidisciplinary artist specializing in an array of media who loves capturing the essence of life.

Multi-disciplinary new media artist James Talambas is known for creating site-specific, multi-dimensional and multi-sensory sculptures and murals. Talambas invites visitors to taste “The Addison” on the Main Stage at the Addison Theatre Centre. His immersive work pays a playful homage to French painter Georges Seurat with the inclusion of music and sound design that will enhance the projections in the space.

California-born Fernando Olivares relocated recently to Addison, Texas, and is bringing his unique visual and rendering style to Taste Addison’s Stone Cottage. His influences draw on music, pop culture, the wild and social realism, as well as the Chicano culture he grew up around.  For Taste Addison, Olivares is creating an immersive experience that will allow Taste Addison festivalgoers to experience with all five senses – all in one space.

The Addison Conference Centre will host a variety of fine art as it is transformed into the Hall of Art, presented by Kenny’s Restaurant Group. Diners from across North Texas know Celebrity Chef Kenny Bowers for his delicious culinary art, but now they can experience his abstract art on display in the festival's Hall of Art. After years of using whisks and tongs, Bowers has naturally gravitated to a palette knife over a brush.

Located inside the Conference Centre lobby, Bowers’ work will be on display and available for purchase all weekend long, with 100% of sales benefiting St. Jude’s. Other local artists will also pop-up in the Hall of Art to create an incredible interactive, engaging and top-notch experience.

Performing arts are spilling into the visual arts in the Theatre Studio of the Addison Theatre Centre with the Studio 24 Silent Disco.  Guests are invited to check out the beats and enjoy the artsy treats that come with lights and music in this cool space all weekend long. DJ Luna Texas will be onsite throughout the weekend to help set the vibe.

Along the beautiful Addison Circle Park pergola, guests can enjoy the Sip & Stroll Art Walk. Dozens of curated artisans and makers will share their wares in this new Taste Addison installation. Alongside the Art Walk, acclaimed muralist Mari Pohlman has been commissioned to create a large-scale mural that doubles as a program detailing all the events at Taste Addison.

Throughout the Sip & Stroll Art Walk as well as nearby at the nearby Shoppers Row and Marketplace, visitors to Taste Addison will have the opportunity to find artistic creations for purchase.

Guests wanting to enjoy not only the fabulous art experiences at Taste Addison but also the amazing array of public art in Addison are encouraged to purchase a hotel package and make a weekend of the experience.

Experience the sights, sounds and flavors of India at the fifth-annual Festival of Joy this Saturday (April 27) at Klyde Warren Park! Celebrating Indian culture and spirituality, the free event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a welcome ceremony followed by a festive parade at 11:30 throughout the Dallas Arts District. And new this year, don’t miss the evening performance by popular Indian artist Gaura Vani (GARR-ruh VAHN-nee) at 7 p.m. who will perform a lively mix of Asian fusion music.

Presented by Kalachandji’s, the family-friendly festival brings together thousands of people for a full day of bright colors, culture, beautiful flowers and a free vegetarian feast. Guests can enjoy folk dances, yoga, kids crafts, face painting, an ethnic clothing bazaar, vibrant entertainment, ask-a-monk and other activities and exhibits that reveal the spiritual heart of India.

The Festival of Joy, also celebrated as Ratha Yatra or Festival of Chariots, has its roots in the ancient Indian bhakti tradition. It has been observed annually for more than 3,000 years in the holy city of Jagannatha Puri in the South Indian state of Orissa, making it the world’s longest-running street festival. It is now held in major city centers worldwide, including New York City’s Fifth Avenue and London’s Piccadilly Circus.

The festival will start at 11 a.m. with a welcome ceremony at Klyde Warren Park, followed by a parade at 11:30 a.m. through the Dallas Arts District and back to the park at 1:30 p.m. Hundreds of festivalgoers, pilgrims and faith leaders will pull the colorful chariot carrying the sacred deities of Jagannatha, Subhadra and Balarama along the route. Hundreds more will dance, sing sacred mantras and play traditional musical instruments. Devotees believe that if they get the opportunity to pull the ropes of the giant chariot carrying Lord Krishna, known as Jagannatha or the Lord of the Universe, they can obtain eternal service to the Lord in the spiritual world.

After the procession returns to Klyde Warren Park, families and guests can enjoy a free vegetarian feast and live stage entertainment, sample regional Indian street food favorites, visit an ethnic clothing bazaar, and explore holistic living exhibits revealing the spiritual heart of India, featuring Ayurveda, yoga, traditional crafts, mehndi, try-a-sari, ask-a-monk, vegetarian cooking and more.

At 7 p.m., Vani will be featured in a concert performance on the main stage with kirtan (musical mantra meditation) and bharat-natyam (classical Indian dance).

Note: Although the free feast and some activities will close at 5 p.m., the Indian street food concessions will remain open during the evening concert.

Festivalgoers who would like to experience more can get info on the Kalachandji Konnect program of daily philosophy classes and kirtan, and continuing education programs in meditation, yoga, Ayurveda and vegetarian cooking.

TEXAS COUNTRY ARTIST JOSH ABBOTT AND DQ RESTAURANTS IN TEXAS DO IT AGAIN WITH A NEW COLLABORATION

Josh Abbott and DQ® restaurants in Texas do it again with another exciting collaboration. The two Texas icons have come together with the Josh Abbott Meal featuring the country singer’s favorite childhood meal which kicks off April 29 and runs through May 26 at participating DQ restaurants in Texas.

“I am from a little town called Idalou outside of Lubbock, Texas and Dairy Queen was always my go to spot growing up,” reminisced Josh Abbott, lead singer of the Josh Abbott Band. “Whether I was heading to Dairy Queen after a basketball or football game, or going to Dairy Queen with my Grandpa, I have a lot of great memories with the brand.”

The Josh Abbott Meal features a 4-piece Steak Finger Country Basket, a mini M&M’s® Milk Chocolate Blizzard® Treat, a refreshing Iced Tea, and a collectible limited-edition Josh Abbott cup, available at participating restaurants while supplies last.

When it comes DQ, Josh said he gravitated to the steak finger basket growing up because it was unique. “You can go to a lot of places with burgers or chicken, but Dairy Queen has the variety, and I loved the steak fingers.”

“Texans work hard and play hard, and when they are hungry, they come to DQ restaurants in Texas for their favorite Treats & Eats,” said Lou Romanus, CEO of Texas Dairy Queen Operators’ Council. “We have enjoyed working with Josh the last couple of years who brings his nostalgia and passion for Dairy Queen into this new initiative.”

The two Texas icons joined forces in 2022 to create a fresh new sound for DQ restaurants in Texas with one of the most recognizable jingles in the Lone Star State, “That’s What I like About Texas.”  The country music star brought his distinctive style to the jingle which has been a staple for the past two decades.

Today, Josh is building DQ memories with his own kids. He and his family recently visited a DQ location where he introduced his children to the Blizzard Treat. “Watching their faces, that sugar rush and the joy was a really cool moment! About Josh Abbott

Produced by Dwight A. Baker (Flatland Cavalry), the new album is their first full-length since 2020 and is the first featuring a newly reconfigured lineup.
