Even though you cannot change the temperature outside at will, you can control the climate inside of your home — if you have a properly functioning air conditioner, that is.

After a mild winter in Dallas and with hot months looming ahead, it’s important to make sure your air conditioning system is in proper working order. Here are several warning signs that your home’s AC unit may need to be repaired or replaced:

  • Home Doesn’t Cool Down: If your home doesn’t get cool, your air conditioner may just need refrigerant, or the problem could be something more serious. The filter may just need a good cleaning, but it could need something bigger like a new compressor.
  • Power Bill Increases: During the summer months, it’s normal for a home’s electrical bill to increase, but your AC unit may need repairs if your bill continues to rise after you have cut back or not changed the amount of its usage.
  • Mildew Smell: If your air conditioner is emitting a mildew odor, it may need to be properly cleaned.
  • Water Leakage: One sign of a problem with an air conditioning unit is when water puddles start forming around it, caused by a leak or a possible blockage in the system. If ignored, one of these problems could lead to bigger and more expensive issues.
  • Older Than 15 Years: Many home AC units can last for 15 years or more, but if your unit has reached that age, it could use a professional inspection to determine if it is still functioning properly or should be repaired or replaced.

If your AC unit needs to be replaced, the average cost ranges between $5,000 and $10,000. At Hooper Plumbing and Air Conditioning, we have several financing options through GE Capital to help meet our customers’ needs. There are low monthly payment options and 0% options.

Some of our air conditioning units can be financed for as low as $125 per month, which can be less than the amount of the energy savings, depending on the unit. This allows our customers to upgrade to higher quality and more efficient systems. Financing is often a good option, because unlike a car that may need replacing as soon as it’s paid off, your AC system should last for 15 years or more.

Natural gas is an efficient and natural way to heat and power your home, but when burning is incomplete in your heater, furnace, stove, or other household gas appliances, it becomes carbon monoxide (CO) — an odorless, colorless, tasteless, and deadly poisonous gas if breathed for a few minutes.

The predicament occurs when there is a leak in the natural gas coming into the house or if there is too much CO built up in the home — caused by a lack of proper ventilation.

Symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to food poisoning and the flu; confusion, headaches, dizziness, vomiting or faintness are all signs of exposure to carbon monoxide. If you have these symptoms and suspect CO poisoning — especially if more than one person in the house comes down with these symptoms suddenly — vent your house and find an emergency room immediately. Let the doctors know you suspect CO poisoning.

To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run your car, lawnmower, chainsaws or other gas powered engines inside a closed space or garage, don’t use charcoal grills indoors, and don’t sleep in a room with a gas or kerosene space heater, as all of these devices emit carbon monoxide.

The professionals at Hooper Plumbing and Air Conditioning in the Park Cities recommend several ways to help you prevent natural gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

  1. Installing a carbon monoxide detector should be your first line of defense. Detectors can be found at the local hardware store and easily installed, just like a smoke detector, but are specifically designed to detect dangerous levels of CO. (Carbon monoxide detectors are NOT replacements for smoke detectors, but there are some models on the market that serve a dual purpose.)

  2. Hooper Plumbing offers preventative maintenance and inspections for all of your gas appliances and lines. They can test for leaks and detect problems before they become deadly complications.

  3. While natural disasters can’t be prevented, Hooper Plumbing offers a Natural Disaster Safety Valve, a device that connects to the gas lines going into your home and can shut off gas if lines become broken or damaged.

Too often, we show up on the scene just to let the homeowner know that their prized tankless water heater isn’t going to make it. A new circuit board and a few parts will get it back in service, but it won’t be the original faithful friend that has helped them every day by providing an unlimited supply of hot water with less energy usage.

Sadly, this tankless tragedy didn’t have to happen. A few minutes of preventative maintenance on a regular basis can keep a tankless water heater working for years without any major service. Just like the Keurig single-brew coffee systems, tankless water systems suffer from water mineral deposit buildup and require regular “descaling” to extend their useful life.

Homeowners can descale their tankless water heaters themselves using a combination of vinegar, a few hoses and a bucket. Because the water used in tankless heaters often ends up in drinking water, care should be taken with the process.

If you’d like us to take care of it for you and walk you through the process, just give us a call.

The Texas summer isn't kind to your air-conditioning system. And no one is thinking about their furnace when temperatures soar over the 100-degree mark. Are you going to be OK over the next few months or is a system failure in your future?

You can answer this question by scheduling a HVAC inspection and fixing problems before the system gives out.

“Too many people call us in a panic,” said Tracy Rodden of Dallas-based Hooper Plumbing & Air Conditioning. “They’ve waited until their system failed and now they are miserably hot or freezing cold and the repair is going to be expensive. Smart homeowners will schedule regular maintenance to keep their systems going year-round without a hitch.”

An HVAC inspection will tell you whether you need to replace or repair your heating and cooling systems as the warm days slowly transition to cooler ones. And if your system does need service, you can schedule repair work quickly so that you won't be surprised by a sputtering furnace on that first chilly evening of the winter season.

Scheduling an HVAC inspection can also keep your family safe. A malfunctioning furnace can emit carbon monoxide, putting you and your family at risk. A furnace that's not operating properly might result, too, in a potentially deadly electrical fire.

During an inspection, an HVAC professional will tighten electrical connections and make sure that your furnace is properly vented. This will reduce the chance of either an electrical fire or a dangerous gas leak.

HVAC technicians will also check to make sure that your heating and cooling systems are properly moving the air around your home. This, too, is an important safety matter. Better air flow can reduce the build-up of mold, bacteria and dirt in your home and in your heating and cooling vents. This is especially important for family members who may suffer from asthma or allergies. A build-up of mold, dust and dirt is hardly healthy for such family members.

Then there's energy efficiency. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program lists a yearly HVAC tune-up and inspection as a must-do for homeowners hoping to cut down on the size of their heating and cooling bills.

Like many Texas residents, you probably noticed your utility bills rising this summer. Malfunctioning heating and cooling systems often have to work harder to cool or heat your home's rooms. And when HVAC systems are working harder, they're consuming more energy, leaving you with higher utility bills.

The same can happen with older furnaces and air-conditioning systems. Today's high-efficiency HVAC systems are designed to heat and cool rooms while consuming as little energy as possible. The same can't always be said of older systems. An HVAC technician inspecting your system might recommend that you upgrade to a newer, more efficient heating and cooling system.

Yes, you'll have to pay for that new system. But your heating and cooling contractor should be able to give you an estimate for how dramatically your yearly utility bills will fall thanks to a more efficient HVAC system. You can then calculate how quickly you'll be able to cover the cost of your new HVAC equipment. You might be surprised at how short the payback period can be.

What happens during the yearly HVAC check-up? According to ENERGY STAR, an HVAC technician should tighten all electronic connections, lubricate all the moving parts of your system, make sure that your system's condensate drain is not plugged and determine if operating controls are working properly.

Your HVAC technician won’t focus solely on your furnace during the yearly inspection. To make sure that your air-conditioning system will be ready for the following summer, your technician will clean your cooling unit's evaporator and condenser air-conditioning coils, check your central air-conditioner's refrigerant level and clean and adjust your system's blower components.

You can take steps on your own, too, to make sure that your HVAC system is working properly. This includes inspecting, cleaning and changing the air filters in your central air-conditioner, furnace and heat pump. ENERGY STAR recommends that you do this once every month.

If you wake up in the morning and dread pulling your cozy, warm feet out from under the covers in anticipation of those cold hardwood floors, you can only imagine how cold the pipes under your home must get. Although the weather warms up to a gorgeous 65 degrees during the day, it dips into the low 30s at night. Pretty soon, we will be experiencing freezes typical to Februarys in Texas. Don’t wait for an emergency to call the plumber!

3 Simple Tips for Keeping Your Home’s Plumbing in Tip-Top Shape

  • Kitchen & Bath: Plumbing for kitchen and bathroom sinks often include pipes near an exterior un-insulated wall, which causes problems during freezing temperatures. Prevent your pipes from freezing by simply opening cabinet doors below the sink to allow warm air to circulate.
  • Exposed Piping: Insulate any piping that is exposed. While you can contact a plumber to assist with this task, a simple do-it-yourself solution is to wrap the pipes with cloth, use foam insulation material around the cloth and duct tape it securely together.
  • Exterior Faucets: Also known as sill-cocks and/or spigots, faucets are often left untreated and filled with water during the winter months. This simple oversight can lead to very costly repairs and is easy to avoid. Drain the water out of all your outdoor faucets and cover them with insulation. If you have a vacation home, you will want to turn the water supply off completely and drain all the plumbing.

If you are not a DIY type, or have an issue you need assistance with that is not covered in this article, contact Hooper Plumbing at (214) 363-2543, or visit us on the web at www.hooperplumbing.com.

It's bound to happen at some point; clogged drains. Although we take the necessary precautions to avoid this problem, after time and build up we are faced with the challenge of unclogging a drain. Most plugged drains can be fixed on your own, but when faced with some serious plumbing issues call Hooper Plumbing and Air Conditioning.

Here are some tips to handle clogged toilets, sinks and showers.

  1. Remember toilets are not trash cans. Toilet paper and/or women’s sanitary products should be the only items put in your toilet. Hair, small items and other paper products can get stuck causing a backed up toilet.
  2. Human hair and/or soap scraps and scum are a real problem when it comes to your shower and sink drains.  Check your strainers often in your sink and tub to clean the excess hair and residue. You can also take some needle-nose pliers and dig the hair out.
  3. Food is the enemy for kitchen sink clogs. Although they are there for a purpose, many home owner abuse the garbage disposal. Throw away as much food as you can in the garbage and make sure to keep fruit pits, seeds, bones and grease out of the disposal. Also do not pack food into your disposal and continue to run cool water while the disposer is on and let the water keep running a bit after.

These will all save you the stress and time of not having to deal with a clogged drain. If you have other clogs, leaks and/or other plumbing problems, please give Hooper Plumbing and Air Conditioning a call today.

Have your utility bills been through the roof? During this hot summer month we’ve been cranking our air conditioning units and trying to keep the cost down, but it is almost impossible with triple digit days.

If you haven’t changed your air filters or have gotten your AC unit checked, this may be the time to do so. Dirty filters, leaks in ductwork or an older AC unit could be allowing air conditioning that you aren’t even using to seep through, meaning you are paying for cool air you aren’t even using. Changing your air filter is one of many steps to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Here are some tips to keep your home cool and utility bills down for the rest of this heat wave.

  • Raise the temperature on your thermostat by six to eight degrees during working hours when you are not at time.
  • Change your air filter to get maximum efficiency out of them keeping your home cool and clean.
  • Make sure your duct work is not leaking. On average ducts leak as much as 30 percent of the conditioned air, air you have paid for.
  • Make sure your AC unit is operating properly. Call a professional to come out and check your unit. We advise you to get an annual inspection to ensure that all equipment is working and safe.

Call Hooper Plumbing and Air Conditioning today if you have any questions or concerns regarding your AC Unit or other matters.

North Texas weather allows for about two weeks of “open window weather,” and then most people are ready to turn on the air conditioning. Fortunately, comfort does not have to equate to exorbitantly high energy bills. Proper care of your AC system helps the system to work more efficiently -- reducing energy cost and increasing the life of your AC system.

Conduct an Energy Audit

HVAC companies offer home energy audits (also called home energy assessments) to help homeowners reduce energy consumption and energy waste. The first step in a home energy audit is to pinpoint the areas in your home where energy is being wasted. Once you have determined the areas of your home that are losing energy, the next step is to develop a plan for correcting the wasted areas and optimizing all other areas of energy output.

Easy Tips for Reducing Energy Consumption

  1. Assess the HVAC system. A thorough and professional assessment of your home’s heating and cooling system will provide important information that is specific to your HVAC system and its airflow efficiency. Based on the assessment, an HVAC company can devise a proper plan (if necessary) for making energy efficient improvements, which may include energy improvements for your home’s hot water heater.
  2. Replace Air Conditioning Filters. Dirty HVAC filters restrict the ability for efficient airflow, causing the HVAC system to work harder and longer to cool the house. Hiring a professional to come into the home on a routine, monthly basis to change out all air filters can reduce energy consumption by 1 to 2 percent. While this may not sound like a lot, it certainly adds up over the course of a long, hot summer.
  3. Weather-Strip Leaky Doors and Windows. Doors and windows are notorious culprits for wasted energy. A home audit will identify areas of the home that require weather-stripping, sealing and caulking, which can result in an energy savings of 2 percent or more.
  4. Seal Ducts. Leaking ductwork is a costly energy drain. The average home loses 25 percent or more of its energy through leaky ducts. A home energy audit will identify where these leaks are occurring. An HVAC company will repair the ducts and clean the non-leaking ones. It is important to note that duct cleaning and duct sealing are not the same thing; however, even if your ducts are not leaking, they should still be cleaned.

Purchasing New HVAC System

While no one gets excited about the prospect of purchasing a new HVAC system, after a thorough home energy audit, you may find yourself real excited at the idea. Many of the homes in the Park Cities are old and have dated HVAC systems. The HVAC systems available today are designed to be tremendously efficient and over the course of your life in your home can save you thousands of dollars. Purchasing an Energy Star® HVAC system can save you 10 percent or more on your heating and cooling costs.

Contact Hooper Plumbing and Air Conditioning to schedule a home energy audit.

The snow is gone, the sun is shining and lets hope the short lived Dallas winter is over and done with. The cold weather we had may have done a number on your water heater and pipes, so if you are starting to spring clean, it’s time for some springtime maintenance.

With spring finally starting to kick in it is a great time for those home improvements you pushed to the side during the holidays. One important task that must be done is checking that water heater and pipes. If you spot these signs post winter weather it is probably time to call an expert.

  • Age – Inspect your water heater’s age. If you know it is time to replace that water heater, don’t wait any longer.
  • Rust – If you notice the water in your water heater has a tint to it, this could be caused by rust build up.
  • Temperature – If your hot water is not hot, or you are running out of warm water a lot quicker than usual you need your water heater inspected. No one likes being the person in the shower with a head full of shampoo when the hot water runs out.
  • Leaks – If you notice water surrounding your water heater you may have a small leak, which could potential lead to a HUGE problem. One small leak could eventually lead to flooding, a problem that you don’t want to deal with.

This is a small checklist to ensure that you are ready for the spring. Along with checking your water heater you should always check your pipes for any leaks and rust that may be caused by the colder weather.

If you have any problems with your plumbing or need a routine check up call Hooper Plumbing & Air Conditioning. BubbleLife Deals is offering a FREE service call from Hooper Plumbing & Air Conditioning until 3/31/2011. So don’t waste any more time and give us a call:
