Guests will then be seated at 7:30 p.m. for a lavish three-course dinner with wine pairings.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League's (DSOL's) mission is to support the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Community Outreach and Education Programs opening doors to a brighter future for the children in our community. The programs include: Young Strings, Kim Noltemy Young Musicians, Cecil and Ida Green Youth Concert Series, DSO on the Go (Community Concerts and Performances), and My DSO Concerts for children and adults on the autism spectrum. The DSOL has raised over $22 million to support these programs.

EMPOWER, a nonprofit child welfare collaborative, now provides foster care case management, kinship and reunification services for all children and families in the Metroplex East region, after entering Stage II of the Community-Based Care (CBC) contract with the State of Texas on March 1, 2024. EMPOWER is led by Texas Family Initiative LLC (TFI) and is supported by local providers in North Texas, including CK Family Services, Jonathan’s Place, The Bair Foundation and Pathways Youth and Family Services. EMPOWER will serve as the lead agency for the nine-county area that includes Dallas, Collin, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Rockwall, Kaufman and Navarro counties.

“Our team has worked tirelessly to prepare for the final phase of CBC readiness and get ready to provide children and their families in the Metroplex East region with the most effective services to promote safety, permanency and overall well-being,” says Shirley Dwyer, Texas Family Initiative Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “We are thankful to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services for their loyal partnership in ensuring a seamless transition.”  

EMPOWER was awarded the CBC contract by the State of Texas in February 2023, and entered a multi-stage process to take over services for the region. Stage II is the phase of implementing and transforming the services and care provided to children and families in the nine-county region through February 29, 2028, the term of this contract. 

CBC is an innovative approach to traditional foster care services because it utilizes local nonprofits to outsource out of home placement and case management services. Under CBC, a single entity is responsible for coordinating and delivering all child welfare services in a specific geographic area. The model allows for the CBC contractor to draw on existing community-based local resources and support to meet the unique and individual needs of children and their families. CBC’s goal is to have children placed in foster care close to their home so that they may thrive and remain connected to their family, friends, school and community. In order to promote family preservation and reunification, EMPOWER works with families to identify the root causes of their involvement with the child welfare system and provides the support needed to solve those issues.  

“Our team is committed to the safety and well-being of children and families in Metroplex East and we are dedicated to providing them with the best care available,” says Dr. Linda Garcia, Senior Vice President of EMPOWER. “We will also continue to educate our local communities on the crucial role foster parents play to fill the significant need for more foster homes.” 

The Metroplex East contract is one of the largest CBC awards in U.S. history, and the fifth region in Texas to transition to CBC services. There are nearly 2,000 foster children in the Metroplex East region. 

Since Sept. 1, 2023, EMPOWER has provided placement services in the Metroplex East Region. During that time, all children referred by the State have been placed in a licensed placement and have not stayed in unlicensed child watch. For the first time in over five years, all children in the Metroplex East Region are placed in licensed placements.

According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), from September 2021 to February 2022, on average there were 2,456 children in DFPS conservatorship in Texas’ Metroplex East region. Around 79% of those foster children were placed within the same Metroplex East region, and 37.8% were placed in their home county.

U&I and the SPCA of Texas have partnered for The 30th Annual U&I Dash on Saturday, March 23 at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas. The event kicks off early Saturday morning with a dog-friendly 5K & 1 mile race through the Dallas Arts District then shifts gears to become an art and music festival from 4 to 10 pm.

As part of the collaboration, the SPCA of Texas will host a dedicated booth at The Dash from 7 to 11 am, offering attendees the opportunity to meet and adopt adorable dogs. There also will be an opportunity for the community to learn how they can make a difference in the overwhelming crisis of shelter overcrowding by fostering a dog. Fostering is free and it is not a long-term commitment.

"We need to look at people with disabilities the way our pets do, with unconditional love,” said Hugh Breland, CEO of U&I. “Dogs don’t see disabilities, they see human beings. During the event, we are connecting anyone who would like the unconditional love of a dog with the SPCA.” 

Having a pet, whether a Shepherd or a Sheltie, can provide happiness to anyone, but veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can benefit greatly from pet ownership. After giving a life to service, it might be difficult to leave the military and rejoin the regular workforce. Veterans can adopt a dog from the SPCA of Texas for free or at a reduced cost simply by presenting their service ID.

The community is invited to stop by the U&I Live Screen-Printing Booth and get a t- shirt printed featuring the SPCA pup named Kong from 4 to 10 pm. 

The SPCA of Texas is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to preventing and prosecuting animal cruelty. Every year, the Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit looks into hundreds of reports of animal abuse, neglect, hoarding, commercial breeding, animal fighting, and other forms of animal maltreatment in order to better serve the community in North Texas. They collaborate closely with neighborhood law enforcement and animal control organizations to help rescue and care for animals that are the victims of abuse or neglect. 

In 1951, Jean Walker Bentley overcame cultural barriers and spoke out for disabled children and their families. She started the Children’s Development Center to meet the scholastic and socialization needs of children with special needs. In 1981, the federal government mandated that public schools had the responsibility to educate children with disabilities. The organization evolved to help veterans find employment and provide vocational training for special education students preparing to transition out of high school.

Today, as one of the largest workforce development centers in DFW, U&I continues to meet the needs of disabled individuals by providing vocational training, job readiness training, paid work opportunities and community placement to more than 1000 youth and adults with severe intellectual, physical and/or mental health disabilities. March is Happiness Month, and Live Happy, a Dallas-based company that promotes happiness and well-being, is inviting everyone to join them in spreading joy and kindness. Live Happy’s 10th annual #HappyActs campaign is a global movement that encourages people to perform simple acts of kindness every day of the month.

“Research shows that performing acts of kindness not only benefits others, but also boosts our own happiness, health, and sense of purpose,” said Deborah K. Heisz, CEO of Live Happy and author of Live Happy: Ten Practices for Choosing Joy. “We want to inspire people to make happiness a habit, and #HappyActs is a fun and easy way to do that.”

 

 

To make it even easier, Live Happy created a free downloadable calendar with ideas for #HappyActs that can be done at work, home, and school.

“Our #HappyActs celebration provides an easy way for people to make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of those around them,” Heisz said. “We’re hoping it’s a pass-it-on kind of moment where you do something for someone, then they do something for somebody else. You become the center of a ripple of positive activity not just for that day but stretching into weeks and months and genuinely making the world a happier place.”

At the center of the month-long campaign is the International Day of Happiness on March 20, 

a worldwide celebration established by the United Nations in 2011 to recognize happiness as a fundamental human right and goal.

Sharing on the virtual wall is easy; participants can post their #HappyActs using a QR code on the site or can simply include the tag #HappyActs on social media posts during the month of March. People who are hosting physical walls are encouraged to share pictures of their walls and activities on the Digital Happiness Wall.

A concert inspired the historic gardens of Europe

Lumedia Musicworks presents its latest concert titled A Little Night Garden Music in Dallas at St. John’s Episcopal Church on April 21 and at On the Levee event venue on April 22.

The program promises an enchanting exploration of musical biodiversity, presenting works by Bach, Handel, Pachelbel, Purcell, Vivaldi, Uccellini, Clérambault, Roman and film score composer Gabriel Yared. 

Known for their “innovative approach” to classical music (Friends of WRR Classical Radio), the concert is reminiscent of the musical events held in the formal gardens throughout Europe in the 18th century. The group performs just in time for Earth Day.

Some perennial favorites include Pachelbel’s Canon and Gigue, Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, and Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins in A minor. “This is not your garden variety baroque concert, nor your typical baroque group,” says Christopher Phillpott, founding member and viola da gambist/baroque cellist based in Dallas. “To be sure, audiences have proclaimed Lumedia to be ‘wacky and wonderful!’” 

The “essential concert” can be heard at Concerts at St. John’s series on April 21 at 3:00 pm, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dallas. Tickets are $10 and only available at the door.

The “enhanced concert” is April 22 at 7:30 pm at On The Levee venue in Dallas, Texas. Garden walls of ivy, surround seating, lighting and other special effects combine to create the enhanced experience. Tickets are $36 and include a wine reception with the artists. Purchase tickets online or at the door. 

Concert run-time is approximately 60 minutes.

Lyric Stage, a theatre company dedicated to the development and preservation of the musical, presents Sweeney Todd from March 15 to April 7. These performances will be presented at Lyric Stage’s new studio stage. Tickets are now available. Opening night, March 15, is sold out.

Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era barber who returns home to London after 15 years of exile to take revenge on the corrupt judge who ruined his life. Sweeney Todd has won numerous awards including eight Tony nominations with two of those wins in 2023. It was a finalist for 2023’s Tony’s Best Revival of a Musical.

Scott Guenther, Lyric Stage’s general manager, said, “This is Lyric's second production in our new studio space, an intimate and immersive experience for audiences, putting them right in the heart of the theatre magic. Sweeney Todd is also the final production in Lyric's show-stopping 30th anniversary season, crafted under the guidance of Executive Producer Catherine Carpenter Cox.”

Lyric Stage’s performance times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Tickets start at $35. Student rush tickets are available for $25 beginning 90 minutes before each performance. Tickets may be purchased online, at the door, or by calling the box office at 214-871-5000.
