The mothers of the debutantes and honor guard met on October 14 for details leading up to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s 30th Presentation Ball on February 20. More than 20 events are planned from the Thanksgiving holidays to the grand finale in February where 43 debutantes will be presented at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Ball chair Nancy Labadie and her co-chairs provided guidelines for ensuring all goes smoothly ranging from accommodating out of town guests, making hotel reservations, planning for photography sessions and scheduling hair and make-up appointments.

The ball is expected to raise more than $400,000 for support of the DSO’s education programs.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra League held a Party of Note with concertmaster Alexander Kerr and DSO violinists Lydia Umlauf and Nora Scheller on October 12 at Nick and Sam’s Grille Park Cities.

The reception and dinner was limited to 50 people, making it an intimate evening for the guests. The musicians spoke briefly before playing a special musical piece for the guests.

The dinner was generously underwritten by Nick and Sam’s. Proceeds from the event will benefit the education and community programs for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce is soliciting nominations for its annual Teacher of the Year Award. The purpose is to recognize full-time educators who are providing outstanding education for their respective students. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs that are serving to improve and promote education.

There will be awards for Elementary School, Middle School and High School for both Public and Private Schools in the East Dallas area of Dallas, Texas. A total of six awards will be presented.

Nominations are being solicited from the Education Community, from the Chamber Board of Directors and from Chamber membership. The awards event will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at Lakehill Preparatory Schools Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center located at 7401 Ferguson Road (on the northwest quadrant of Ferguson Road and I-30).

Diane Dorrans Saeks, best-selling author of twenty-one books, will provide an inspiring and surprising insider view of private collections of rare antiques, exquisite paintings and craftsmanship in her book Anne Getty: Interior Style.

Fresh insight into the extraordinary lives of three of the 20th century’s most iconic trailblazers in the fields of Landscape Gardening, Haute Couture Fashion and Interior Design will be presented in “Designing  Women/Artistic Vision” , the ninth annual “A Writer’s Garden” Literary Symposium and Luncheon. Meryle Secrest, recipient of the 2006 Presidential National Humanities Medal, Pulitzer Prize finalist, renowned biographer, feature writer and creative writing teacher brings the Queen of Fashion to vivid life with her biography Elsa Schiaparelli highlighting the fashion designer’s unique collaborations with Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Alberto Giacometti and Jean Schlumberger.

A “Meet & Greet the Authors” Patron Party for “A Writer’s Garden” Sponsors and Underwriters is planned for Monday evening, November 2, 2015, 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at a private residence.

Since 1986, the major goal of the Women’s Council has been the design, construction, funding and endowment of A Woman’s Garden, the centerpiece garden of the Dallas Arboretum.  A Woman’s Garden is the only public garden in the nation conceived by women, funded by the efforts of women and dedicated to the spirit of women. The support of over 600 members of the Women’s Council make possible the continued expansion and maintenance of A Woman’s Garden.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DISD BOND PROGRAM: NOW YOU KNOW WHOM TO ASK!


The League of Women Voters of Dallas is presenting four educational programs about the $1.6 billion Dallas Independent School District Bond Initiative to be voted upon by voters on the November 3, 2015 election day ballot.

Dr. Cal Jillson will be at all four meetings and Dallas ISD Trustees Edwin Flores, Joyce Foreman, Mike Morath and Bernadette Nutall will attend meetings in their districts.

Dr. Jillson is Professor of Political Science at SMU and is an expert on Texas politics and public policy. He has written about education policy in two recent books- Texas Politics: Governing the Lone Star State (5th edition, Routledge, 2016, now out) and Lone Star Tarnished: A Critical Look at Texas Politics and Public Policy (2nd edition, Routledge, 2015)

About the bond proposal
The Dallas Independent School Board approved a 2015 Bond Initiative to be voted on by the electorate. The proposed bond has many elements that should be known by the voters. These will be a series of meetings designed to inform the voting parents, teachers, principals and all members of the community about the DISD Bond Initiative.  Dr. Jillson will provide an overview of public education and its funding from the local, state, and national governments. The four DISD Trustees will present about the DISD Bond Initiative.  Questions from the audience will be answered.

Texas ranks 50th in the US in graduation rates, and 38th on state spending for public schools. Dallas ISD has the 2nd lowest tax rate compared to the sixteen regional school districts in North Texas.

The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce was  in attendance for the ribbon cutting of the new 500-square-foot facility expansion for Youth Believing in Change (YBC). The organization, located at 8574 Stults Road, is also celebrating its 20th anniversary. YBC was formed in 1995 to give children the spiritual and educational foundation they need to succeed. The ministry hosts after school programs for children ages K-12 from Sept. through May, which includes ...hot meals, tutoring, mentoring and homework help. In addition, YBC offers an eight-week summer program during June and July that mirrors regular school hours. It includes a music program, art enrichment, leadership and other educational efforts.

The expansion was made possible by a matching grant from Steve Van Amburgh, CEO of KDC Real Estate & Investments. With the contribution from Van Amburgh, who has been an YBC advisor for several years, YBC was able to reach the $250,000 financial threshold needed to begin construction on the major building initiative. This included added classroom space, which will double the number of children that can be served.

Lisa and George Longino will serve as the Honorary Chairs for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s 30th Annual Presentation Ball which will be held on February 20, 2016 at the Meyerson Symphony Center. The announcement was made at  ZaZa Art House and Social Gallery on September 24 with friends, family, and DSOL members attending. George Longino was unable to attend because of unexpected back surgery. Daughter Fleming Longino stepped in for her dad and accompanied her mom.

It is located in the Skillman Live Oak Center at 6115 La Vista Drive. My Salon Suite is a private, upscale beauty complex that leases fully furnished salon space to established beauty and wellness professionals who wish to operate their own businesses. Each suite is private, secure, and lockable and each tenant operates his/her business independently.

Vivaldi Patron Circle, a young professionals group of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, hosted a cocktail reception to introduce its new board of directors at the new Del Frisco’s Grille in Uptown on September 8. The event was co-chaired by Alex Burton and Christina Geyer, co-presidents of the organization.

The group has planned a variety of arts and music related events for the year. The VPC will be hosting the After Party for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala on September 26 at the Meyerson Symphony Center with Anna-Sophia van Zweden serving as the Honorary Chair. Other upcoming events on the calendar in November include a concert and reception at the Meyerson and a Holiday Soiree in Highland Park Village.

VPC provides social and networking opportunities for arts-minded twenty-, thirty- and fortysomethings who wish to be part of the next audience for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra League is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Presentation Ball which will be held on February 22, 2016. TOOTSIES hosted a reception and fashion show on August 27 to honor the ball chairs and co-chairs for the past 30 years.

The Presentation Ball, which was first held in 1987, is the largest fundraiser for the DSOL. More than $10 million has been raised for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra through the annual event, which was created with the vision of long-time League member Tincy Miller, who chaired the first ball.

In attendance was founder and chair of the first ball Tincy Miller (1987) and familiar faces from past balls included Caryl Keys (1994), Anne Rodgers (1999), Emilynn Wilson (1993 Co-Chair), Kay Weeks (2013), Dixey Arterburn (2014), Venise Stuart (2015) and Nancy Labadie (2016). 2017 Chair-Elect Jolie Humphrey was also in attendance.

In February 43 debutantes will make their bows on the stage of the McDermott Concert Hall inside the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.
