The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting on November 12 at Talulah & HESS on Abrams in Lakewood. The store, once two separate shops, are now combined in one space. The evening was a shopping event with 10 percent proceeds benefiting the Be Project, of program of The Family Place to combat bullying. Talulah & HESS’s holiday theme is centered around “the art of giving back.” Customers can shop for holiday gifts that also benefit a charity. Balls of Steel are used to chill whiskey and other liquors that shouldn’t be watered down with ice and a percentage of sales will benefit testicular cancer research.

Symposium presented by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum

The Dallas Arboretum was in full fall color for “Designing Women/Artistic Vision”, the ninth annual A Writer’s Garden Literary Symposium and Luncheon presented by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden on November 3.

Shelby Marcus served as the Honorary Chair and the event was chaired by Dorothea Meltzer. Renee Querbes Farren is President of the Women’s Council.  

The featured authors were Judith Tankard, Gertrude Jekyll at Munstead Wood, Meryle Secrest, Elsa Schiaparelli: A Biography and Diane Saeks, Ann Getty: Interior Style. The critically acclaimed authors have written about the lives of three of the 20th Century‘s most iconic trailblazers in the fields of Landscape Gardening, Haute Couture Fashion, and Interior Design.

A private reception was hosted in the home of Katie Engstrom the evening before for patrons and sponsors to meet the authors.

Proceeds from the event make possible the continued expansion and improvement of A Woman’s Garden.

Patrons enjoyed a private reception with the noted authors of “Designing Women/Artistic Vision”, the ninth annual A Writer’s Garden Symposium and Luncheon held on November 3 at the Dallas Arboretum and presented by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

The party was held the evening before the event, allowing guests to meet and mingle with the three authors in advance of the program. It was held in the home of Katie Engstrom.

Proceeds from the event make possible the continued expansion and improvement of A Woman’s Garden. Since 1986, the major goal of the Women’s Council has been the design, construction, funding and endowment of A Woman’s Garden, the centerpiece garden of the Arboretum.  A Woman’s Garden is the only public garden in the nation conceived by women, funded by the efforts of women and dedicated to the spirit of women.

Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2015 Teacher of the Year winners. They are: Cristela Nash, Robert E. Lee Elementary School; Ashley Roe, Dallas Academy; Elizabeth Schmitt, Lakehill Preparatory School; Richard (Rick) Lee  Harrington, Townview Magnet; and Billy Clark, Bishop Lynch High School.

The winners will each receive a $250 gift card and each school will receive a $100 check.

The winners and nominees will be recognized at the Teacher Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, November 17 from 11:30 a.m.  1:00 p.m. at the Lakehill Preparatory Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center, 7401 Ferguson Road 75228. League of Women Voters Provides Dallas ISD Proposed Bond 2015 Fact Sheet

to Inform Voters

The League of Women Voters of Dallas releases its Dallas Independent School District (DISD) Proposed 2015 Bond Program Fact Sheet.

The Fact Sheet is available for all parents, teachers, principals, and other registered voters interested in learning the details of the Dallas Independent School in order to be informed voters during the November 3, 2015 election.

The purpose of the LWV Dallas Bond Fact Sheet is to provide information for DISD voters and the public about the various issues to consider in determining their decision how they vote on the proposed 2015 DISD Bond Program. 

Early voting began on Monday, October 19, 2015. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015. For more information go to Dallas County Elections Department at:

The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution calling for a $1.6 billion bond election. Information can be found at www.dallasisd.org. Note: “all bond projects, project amounts, and program allocations are estimates, and could change in the future.”

Are there specific plans by project for how $1.6 billion bond money will be spent that was approved by an official vote of the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees?

Was a bond election approved by a vote of the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees?

Did the Future Facilities Task Force vote on a plan to be approved by DISD Board?

NO

Are there minutes of the Future Facilities Task Force meetings?

The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce surprised long time member Bulldog Cunningham with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Annual Economic Summit luncheon on October 20. C. C. Young was the Presenting Sponsor for the event which was held at Lakewood Country Club.

Bulldog has been Chairman of the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce twice. He has chaired numerous committees and events for the Chamber and has Chaired the Economic Summit for the past four years. He brought the Summit to a level never previously reached. It’s been sold out the past two years and has raised more money through this event than has ever been done by the Chamber to date.

Luncheon will benefit Benevolence Fund at C. C. Young

Linda Hardison will be the Honorary Chair for the Wrap It Up Luncheon, Christmas Boutique and Fashion Presentation on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Dallas Country Club. The event is sponsored by Body Mind Spirit Connection and proceeds will benefit the Benevolence Fund at C. C. Young.

The event is chaired by Mari Epperson. Sue Ringle is the President of Body Mind Spirit Connection.

The Christmas Boutique Shopping will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon will start at 12:30 p.m. It will feature A Fashion Conversation with Betty Reiter and Jan Strimple with a fashion presentation by Betty Reiter, Inc.

The Christmas boutique will offer stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, girlfriend gifts and Christmas gifts. There will be one-of-a-kind items, Christmas ornaments, scarves, shawls, unique santas and many gift items. Many items are priced below retail and are limited in quantities.

The mothers of the debutantes and honor guard met on October 14 for details leading up to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s 30th Presentation Ball on February 20. More than 20 events are planned from the Thanksgiving holidays to the grand finale in February where 43 debutantes will be presented at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Ball chair Nancy Labadie and her co-chairs provided guidelines for ensuring all goes smoothly ranging from accommodating out of town guests, making hotel reservations, planning for photography sessions and scheduling hair and make-up appointments.

The ball is expected to raise more than $400,000 for support of the DSO’s education programs.
