Guys are hard to shop for. Whether it’s a holiday gift or a birthday gift, don’t give him another boring tie or gift card. Instead, step up your game and give him the ultimate guy gift — a course at a performance driving school.

If you've got a luxury European sports car, you’re going to want to see how it performs out on the open road — but first, make sure you are prepared to handle it. That’s where the performance driving school comes in. According to Edmunds, a performance driving school describes any course that teaches driving techniques derived from racing, adding that these skills can be applied to everyday driving.

But how do you choose the right school? Typically, performance driving schools can be separated into three categories — performance driving, racing or specialty. Though they all focus on driving education, each one is designed to fit a niche. Nerces Mavelian, owner of Autoscope Foreign Car Care has recommendations for driving schools in each category.

Performance Driving School
If you’re interested in a fun way to become a better driver and discover the limits of your favorite sports car, a performance driving school is what you’re looking for. A performance driving school will hone your driving skills in a controlled, safe environment.

Mavelian's recommendations for performance driving schools include:

For a one-day event:

For a two-day (usually Saturday and Sunday):

For a multi-level driving experience at a local professional track:

Racing School
Once you've got the basics of high-speed handling down, a racing school might be a good fit to learn even more. If competition is what you’re after, racing schools allow drivers to compete with other racers on a track, often incorporating actual race cars, offering faster speeds and more precise handling.

Racing school options include:

You may also find a number of racing schools by going to www.racingschools.com, where you have a choice of the kind of racing you're interested in.

BMW also offers a “Racing School” a few times during the year, usually incorporated into a race/driving event weekend. However, you must first attend a number of driving events to be eligible for this school, since it is only offered to accomplished drivers, ready for competitive door-to-door driving on the race track.

Specialty School
Specialty schools often offer specific training for a specific type of vehicle, including drag, kart or NASCAR. Fans of those racing styles would certainly enjoy the class, but the acquired skills aren’t likely to translate to everyday driving, like in a performance driving course or racing school.

Specialty schools include:

Once you've got the driving down, think about maintenance and service for your high-performance sports car. Bypass the dealership and keep your vehicle in top driving condition at Autoscope Foreign Car Care, which specializes in European makes and models including Audi, BMW and Jaguar.
