At the graduation, members of the Class of 2026 entered behind the Shelton 50th Anniversary Legacy Processional, a distinguished group of Shelton leaders, teachers, current and former board members, early faculty members and alumni representing the schools 50-year history. Dressed in white gowns and commemorative 50th anniversary sashes, the Legacy Processional served as a visual tribute to the generations who helped build Shelton and support its mission.

Leading the Legacy Processional was David F. Martineau, Sheltons longest-serving Board of Trustees member since 1978 and father of David T. Martineau, a member of Sheltons very first class in 1976. Martineau and his family carried Sheltons 50th anniversary banner, while his grandson, Jack Plankinton, carried the Class of 2026 banner, symbolizing the connection between Sheltons past, present and future across generations.

Shelton Executive Director Suzanne Stell told the graduates, Members of the Class of 2026 stand on the shoulders of those who came before them those who believed in Sheltons mission, built this community and made their journey possible.

Valedictorian Trilby Schmidt, who started at Shelton in second grade, spoke about the importance of acceptance during her graduation speech. For some of us, Shelton has meant many things: academic freedom, smaller class sizes and more support and understanding from teachers, Schmidt said. But to me, most of all, it has meant acceptance both of myself and from this community.

Schmidt will attend Stanford University, where she plans to major in Political Science and Philosophy. During her time at Shelton, she participated in Theatre, Band and Drumline, Student Council, National Honor Society and the Outdoor Education Club, and she organized the recent Shelton Walk-a-Thon.

Salutatorian Liam Schaeffer, who has attended Shelton since before Pre-K, gave the invocation. He will attend The University of Texas at Austin and major in computer science. During his time at Shelton, he earned many honors, including the Spirit of Shelton, Heart of a Giant, Award of Excellence, Peer Tribute and Harvard Book Award. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and Hope Squad.

Shelton welcomed graduation speaker Travis Lee Ratcliff, a Shelton alumnus from the Class of 2009 and an award-winning filmmaker whose work has been recognized at major film festivals, including the Tribeca Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival. His documentary Dynasty & Destiny, co-created with fellow Shelton alumnus Brody Carmichael, received the Golden Gate Award in San Francisco before later being selected for the Tribeca Film Festival.

After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Ratcliff co-founded the production company Movement House in Austin, creating documentaries and branded films for companies including Hersheys, Frito-Lay, Shiner and Yuengling. His previous documentary, In the Space Between Ages, which profiles a dyslexic sculptor, screened at SXSW. Ratcliff credits Shelton with helping shape both his confidence and career path, saying he discovered his passion for storytelling through Sheltons theatre and film program.

We have been given a sometimes difficult, but always beautiful, gift, Ratcliff said in his speech. We have been given a different way of seeing the world. Eventually, you start to discover that those differences and challenges are what make you see the world in a way no one else can. The same ADD that made it hard for you to sit still can fill your notebooks with a hundred ideas. The dyslexia that caused you to read more slowly can cause you to think more deeply and see connections that are invisible to everyone around you. Or, if youre like me, maybe you realize that you think in images. And those images can become the thing you are best equipped to share with other people, to try to help them see through someone elses eyes.

The Class of 2026 is made up of 81 graduates headed to 49 colleges across 18 states. To date, the class has earned more than $12.5 million in merit scholarships. Acceptances include The University of Texas at Austin, Stanford University, Texas A&M University, Baylor University, Southern Methodist University, Tulane University, Texas Christian University, Pepperdine University, University of California, Los Angeles and more. Nine students earned a composite ACT score of 30 or higher; 29 earned 30 or above in reading, including four perfect scores; nine earned 30 or above in science, including one perfect score; and one earned a perfect score in math. The class also completed 2,680 hours of community service.

Guests, dressed in cowboy chic, enjoyed a cocktail reception, seated dinner, live auction and a special performance by Little Big Town. Attendees also had the opportunity to walk through a hallway of Shelton memorabilia and historic photos, offering a meaningful look back at the schools 50-year legacy. The Shelton community also viewed a video featuring students sharing their own stories, highlighting the impact of a Shelton education.

Funds raised from the auction reached a record-breaking total and will support a wide range of initiatives at Shelton, including academics, curriculum programs, fine arts, athletics, technology, professional development for teachers, the wellness program, security enhancements and tuition assistance. Proceeds also benefit the Shelton Endowment Fund and the Shelton Scholarship Fund.

Among the evenings highlights were several premier auction packages, including the Ultimate Cowboys experience featuring travel on the team-chartered plane and tickets to an away game an Eagles concert experience at Globe Life Field, Del Mar Race Week and naming rights to a glass installation in Sheltons main hall created by alumna and artist Carlyn Ray.

The 2026 Stampede Auction was co-chaired by Mandy Evans and JoAnna Sudbeck. Shelly Lloyd is Sheltons director of volunteer relations and events. Kimberly Kahn and Leigh Erin Lundy serve as co-presidents of the 20252026 Shelton Parents Association, which sponsored the event. Francie Moody-Dahlberg, Shelton parent and executive director and chairman of the Moody Foundation, served as honorary chairman.

Executive Director Suzanne Stell thanked parents, volunteers, longtime Shelton leaders, sponsors, underwriters and staff for their support, including members of the 50 for 50 Club donors who contributed $50,000 in honor of Sheltons 50th anniversary. She also expressed gratitude to Shelton parents Renee and Scott Jansen of Goody Goody, who donated all beverages for the fifth consecutive year.

In her remarks, Suzanne noted that Shelton students have earned more than $80 million in merit scholarships between 2004 and 2026. We are here to celebrate the past, the present and the future, she said. What weve accomplished together is extraordinary. Sheltons story is one of perseverance, passion and purpose.

The program also featured remarks from Shelton parent and alumnus Patrick Wallace, whose mother, Diane Wallace, chaired the Stampede Auction in 199192. Wallace attended Sheltons Lovers Lane campus from 1987 to 1993.

I came to Shelton broken my confidence and self-esteem were so low. But here, it was like I found my people. The teachers understood me, my confidence grew year by year and it truly changed the trajectory of my life, he said. I would not be where I am today without the foundation I received at Shelton. It changed my life and now Im seeing it do the same for my children. Wallace is now a financial advisor at Gardner Wallace, a financial planning and management company.

Attendees viewed a video message from Charlotte Jones, executive vice president and chief brand officer of the Dallas Cowboys and a former Shelton parent.

No family anticipates needing a school for learning differences, but when you find Shelton, you discover hope, she said. You discover answers. You discover people who understand your child at a level few others ever have. Shelton restores confidence. It reshapes a childs future. Its not just a school its a family.

The next 50 years begin tonight. We have both the opportunity and the responsibility to ensure Shelton continues to transform lives. Through our generosity, our leadership and our engagement, we chart the path forward.

Thank you to Mrs. Davis, Assistant Heads of Lower School Lena Hilbert and Beth Womble and all of the Lower School teachers and staff who organized such a meaningful 50th Founders Day celebration.

Shelton 50th Fun Facts:

Shelton was founded on April 2, 1976, when The June Shelton School and Evaluation Center was officially chartered under the Texas Nonprofit Corporation Act.

Founder Dr. June Shelton established the school to provide evaluation, education and training for individuals with learning differences and to help educators better understand language disorders and school-related challenges.

Larry Beeman personally flew the incorporation papers to Austin and hand-delivered them to ensure the school was chartered without delay.

This years symposium explored how ethics shapes decision-making across business, health care and the aerospace industry fields where innovation, safety and accountability continue to challenge what it means to act responsibly and with integrity.

Students heard the Charge for the Day from Maggie Thomas (Shelton Class of 2013), co-founder and creative director of Parachute Studio, a Dallas-based creative studio specializing in branding, creative strategy and web development. Thomas earned her Bachelors degree in Philosophy from Sewanee: The University of the South, where she studied ethics. We live in a very complex world and every decision we make has complex consequences, Thomas said. The time to start building your ethical compass is not someday. Its right now.

Keynote speaker Lynn McBee, Dallas workforce czar, CEO of the Young Womens Preparatory Network and a longtime Dallas civic leader focused on workforce development, education and public-private partnerships, challenged students to think of ethics as something built through daily choices, not dramatic moments.

Ethical practices are not simply about checking a box, McBee said. Theyre about protecting your credibility. And credibility is what makes long-term success possible. She explained that many ethical dilemmas do not present themselves as obvious right-or-wrong decisions, but rather as small moments where someone may be tempted to take shortcuts.

McBee encouraged students to focus on consistency and character, emphasizing that trust is earned over time. Trust isnt built in big moments, its built in ordinary ones, she said. When you keep your word and you do what you say youre going to do, thats how you earn loyalty, develop your reputation and your character.

Following the keynote and Charge for the Day, students rotated through three panel discussions, hearing from leaders about how ethics guides decision-making in their industries.

Healthcare Ethics Panel

A discussion focused on integrity, compassion and fairness in patient care and medical innovation.

Fred Grinnell, Ph.D., Robert McLemore Professor of Medical Science, UT Southwestern Medical Center

Reenu S. Eapen Rose, MD, board-certified pediatric cardiologist; mother of Shelton senior Evan Rose

Jennifer Wimberly, MD, MA, chair of the Institutional Ethics Committee and medical director of Clinical Ethics and Resiliency, Parkland Health

Business Ethics Panel

A conversation on how integrity and accountability guide decision-making in business, innovation and community leadership.

Jorge Baldor, chairman of After8toEducate

Jennifer Chandler, managing director and president of Bank of America Dallas; head of Philanthropic Solutions; mother of Shelton ninth-grader Harper Chandler

Madison Carrier Perry (Shelton Class of 2011), financial advisor, Northwestern Mutual

Aerospace Ethics Panel

A panel exploring how integrity, safety and accountability guide decision-making in one of the worlds most complex and high-stakes industries.

Brittany Dinsmore, associate director and chief flight instructor, Texas Woman's University Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences

Ernest Huffman, program manager for congestion management and aviation planning, North Central Texas Council of Governments

Will Kresl (Shelton Class of 2017), stress engineer, Boeing

After lunch, students delved into ethical dilemmas and participated in group discussions, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. The symposium concluded with a final charge to carry forward the days lessons and make integrity a cornerstone of their future.

Shelton Preschool & Kindergarten Admission Event: October 18, 34 p.m.

Shelton School invites families to our Fall Admission Event on Saturday, October 18, from 3 to 4 p.m. Parents of children ages 25 will have the opportunity to learn more about Sheltons Preschool and Kindergarten programs while young children enjoy fun, fall-themed activities.

The halftime celebration also announced that Sheltons Varsity football team will play Covenant on Nov. 8, 2025, at The Star in Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys, as part of the schools 50th anniversary festivities.

As the largest independent school for intelligent students with learning differences, Shelton marked its 50th year of transforming students lives with a celebration that reflected both school pride and community spirit. The evening began with a lively Shelton Parents Association tailgate on Charger Plaza featuring food trucks, BBQ by Shelton parent John Lynch, a dunk tank and bounce houses. Alumni gathered for a happy hour at La Hacienda Ranch before heading to campus for the big game.

Before kickoff, longtime Shelton leader Gary Webb was honored as the evenings honorary captain in celebration of the schools 50th anniversary. Webb has served as a Shelton board member since 1998 and as chairman of the board from 2010 to 2024. During his time as Board Chair, he was instrumental in leading the way for Sheltons new campus. He was joined on the field by his family: son Adam Webb (Shelton Class of 2000) with wife Tiffany and granddaughter Birdie; daughter Samantha Wynne (Shelton Class of 2004) with husband Beau and grandchildren Caden and Presley; and daughter Malley Armstrong with husband TJ and grandchildren Ella and Amelia. Webb participated in the coin toss to officially open the game.

The Varsity Chargers football team, led by Head Coach Ed Barry, then took the field against Newman International Academy at 7 p.m., following a Middle School football game at 4:30 p.m. The Varsity team won 49-14, and the Middle School team earned a 33-6 victory.

At halftime, the Shelton Parents Association delivered a show unlike any other. The Shelton Drumline teed off the show with a drumroll before the skies above the scoreboard came alive with a choreographed drone show created by Antonio Liska of Robota. Images of Sheltons blue and white, the Charger logo and the schools 50th anniversary emblem lit up the night, all set to the music of Little Big Town.

The Chargerettes then took the field, each holding a letter to spell out the bands name, as Nate Nelson of LeForce coordinated the lights and sound: Little Big Town will perform live at the Stampede Auction on April 11. Parents JoAnna Sudbeck and Mandy Evans, co-chairs of the Stampede Auction, and Shelton Director of Volunteer Relations & Events Shelly Lloyd helped coordinate the reveal.

Once we were told wed be announcing the entertainment at the Homecoming game, we knew we had to go big, said Evans. Shelton is known for thinking outside the box and embracing new technologies, so the drone show felt like the perfect way to surprise our Shelton families.

Also announced at halftime was another milestone event for Sheltons 50th celebrations. On Saturday, Nov. 8, Sheltons Varsity football team will face Covenant at 4 p.m. at The Star in Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The game will also serve as Senior Night. More details on tailgating will be shared soon. Special thanks to the Dallas Cowboys and the Gene and Jerry Jones family for making this opportunity possible.

After the announcements, Sheltons cheerleaders, Chargerettes and Drumline performed before the presentation of the Homecoming Court:

Seniors: Heston Dios, Hudson Ramsey, Brock Rogers, Elinor David, Stevie Hickman, Effie Maguire

Juniors: Tanner Smith, Kate White

Sophomores: Joe Moody, Adelynn Andras

Freshmen: DeShawn McClelland, Chace Smith

The Homecoming King and Queen are seniors Hudson Ramsey and Stevie Hickman.

Shelton Homecoming Week also featured Upper School dress-out days, two pep rallies, a ninth-grade Homecoming dinner and the Upper School Homecoming dance on Sept. 27. In addition, alumni planned to gather for the Sept. 27 Alumni Football Breakfast hosted by Coach Chuck Locke, former Middle School and Upper School football coach and Sheltons former director of alumni relations.

Homecoming and the halftime show offered alumni and guests a glimpse of the spectacular year ahead, capturing Sheltons spirit of community and 50th anniversary celebration that unites students, families, staff and alumni.

Little Big Town built their success on four-part harmony, which felt like the perfect complement to Sheltons four stars in our logo the school, the Evaluation Center, the Outreach & Training programs and the Speech Center, Evans said. Its such a meaningful connection.

As part of Sheltons 50th anniversary celebrations, the school hosted the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event on September 57.

Feed My Starving Children gave our students a chance to serve with purpose," says Suzanne Stell, Shelton's Executive Director. "Kids Feeding Kids is a powerful way to show our students that their actions right here at Shelton can make a global impact.

The idea for Shelton to host a MobilePack came from former Shelton parent and board member Dee Velvin. Stell says Velvins suggestion planted the seed for bringing the event to Shelton as part of its 50th anniversary

The three-day event, organized by the nonprofit that provides nutritionally complete meals to children worldwide and hosted by FMSC volunteer Ron Carey, brought together more than 3,046 volunteers. Together, they packed 641,304 single-serving meals specially formulated to fight malnutrition and delivered to children in greatest need enough to feed 1,756 children one meal a day for an entire year.

On Friday, September 5, Shelton staff and students in grades five through twelve packed meals in the Main Gym. Third- and fourth-grade students also participated, accompanied by parent volunteers. Shelton shifts included 1,026 volunteers who packed 116,856 meals enough to feed 319 children one meal a day for an entire year.

On Saturday and Sunday, September 67, the MobilePack expanded beyond Shelton, welcoming volunteers from across Dallas including families, scout troops, sports teams, book clubs and faith groups. The gym was filled with energy, music and collaboration, creating a memorable service-driven weekend.

For many Shelton families, the experience was personal and inspiring. Shelton parent Amanda Marrone said she and her son Isaac were eager to be involved. We volunteered for Feed My Starving Children at their facility and had a lot of fun doing some of the races and activities. We wanted to be part of celebrating Shelton and helping the community. Isaac, a Shelton third-grader, said, I'm helping out today for the fun of it and to help others.

Nine-year-old Zach Tauzel echoed that spirit of empathy, saying, Helping kids who are hungry is important to me. For third-grader Suri Ballianda, the impact was clear: I like helping because you get to feed kids that dont have food on the table every day like I do. Her mother, Rachana Raman, shared that the project was an opportunity for deeper learning. I wanted Suri to have a certain appreciation for what she has in her own life."

Students of all ages found meaning in the work. Marin Scaggs, an eighth-grader, said, I want to make sure they have food so they can have energy, and also that they feel loved and have the necessities they need.

Students also reflected on the deeper meaning of the event. Junior Baron Pogir said, These children dont have the luxury we do their goal is just to survive. By volunteering, were extending our hearts to another continent and helping them. Its a powerful reminder of kindness and selflessness, and Im proud Shelton made this part of our 50th anniversary.

Shelton staff were equally moved. Eddie Moreno, Shelton Computer Systems Specialist, called the event a powerful reminder of community service. This is a great way to help the community," he said. "Were helping kids and families all over the world. Its a privilege to help. Im proud to work at Shelton, where we help others.

Shelton is grateful to every volunteer who helped turn hunger into hope. A heartfelt thank you goes out to FMSC's Carey, staff and volunteers and all the students, teachers, staff, parents, former parents, alumni, schools, friends and community members who gave their time, energy, and heart to make this event such an incredible success.

Nestled in a cozy classroom of Sheltons Upper School, a vibrant community of writers gathers every Friday morning, united by their passion for creative writing. The Creative Writing Club, open to all students in grades 9-12, offers a supportive and stimulating environment where members can hone their craft, explore new ideas and connect with like-minded peers.

The club was founded in 2021 by Jen Jen Dayton, currently a senior and President of the Creative Writing Club. Under the guidance of faculty advisor Sophia Van Den Handel, the club provides a platform for students to share their writing, receive constructive feedback and learn from one another.

At the beginning of the school year, students completed a survey about their writing goals and participated in various get-to-know-you activities. These included a story-pass, a collaborative activity in which students take turns adding to a narrative. As they built on each other's work, they learned about each others interest areas and writing styles.

Meetings typically begin with a writing prompt designed to spark the imagination. Prompts range from free-writing challenges to structured exercises. The serious melds with the spontaneous and whimsical, as bits of conversation, current events or thematic connections provide the days inspiration. Students practice many genres, from Haikus and sonnets to horror stories, screenplays, and micro-fiction.

Following the writing exercise, club members participate in group discussions and exchange writing advice. These discussions not only deepen members' understanding of the writing process but also foster a sense of camaraderie and common purpose. The club's crowning achievement is the publication of a literary magazine, shaped entirely by its members. They design the cover, select writing pieces and pair them with unique artwork.

For members of the Upper School Creative Writing Club, the experience goes beyond improving their writing skills it's about becoming part of a cohort of writers that values creativity, self-expression and mutual support. As Shelton looks forward to the release of their new magazine later this semester, here is a link to last years edition.

Shelton's Urban Homesteading Course Cultivates Innovation, Sustainability and Hands-On Learning

By Angelo Piersanti

During the 20242025 school year, Zac Ladd, Shelton Assistant Head of Upper School, and Tripp Givens, Shelton Upper School Engineering and Film Faculty, launched Sheltons inaugural semester-long Urban Homesteading course for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The program aims to foster deeper connections between students and the natural world by offering opportunities for year-round engagement, including animal and plant care, seasonal tasks, and leadership roles for older students.

Mr. Ladd says theres value in students stepping away from technology and engaging in real-world, hands-on learning. In a time when so much of this generations life is spent on screens, I think its important to do something hands-on, he says. Learning how to care for animals or build something like a chicken coop is incredibly valuable and practical. These are skills students can carry with them for a long time.

The Shelton Urban Homesteading class centers around project-based learning. Over the spring semester, students focused on learning routines for maintaining Sheltons beehives. They also worked to establish a chicken coop and vegetable garden. These projects involved designing and building the coop and raised garden beds, as well as selecting chicken breeds and plant varieties. Numerous tasks had to be completed as part of these objectives.

Students identified an appropriate site on campus that would meet the basic needs of the chickens. Along the way, they learned valuable practical life skills such as measuring, cutting, and fastening building materials, as well as how to prepare the soil and operate various power tools.

Shelton senior Lydia Stroh says the hands-on nature of the Urban Homesteading class makes learning more meaningful and memorable. Its very interactive, and I feel like you learn more by doing, she says. With outdoor education, you learn by trying like taking care of animals and that kind of trial-and-error approach helps it stick.

While working on the chicken coop and garden projects, students began to express interest in developing an aquaponics system. This initiative was driven by students desire to create a sustainable, closed-loop system that would eventually feed and water plants in specialized beds by periodically flooding them with nutrient-rich water from an attached fish tank. Extensive research and experimentation with tubing, water conditioning, pumps, and siphons shaped the planning of the system.

A curiosity for how things work and how to fix them when they dont led students to explore plumbing valves and the possibility of 3D printing them. They are currently testing a small-scale version of the system using goldfish and a standard fish tank. Eventually, the system could be scaled to produce both fish and plants for human consumption.

All of these challenges test the students abilities to acquire new knowledge and skills, and the Urban Homesteading program seamlessly integrates concepts across engineering, science, and math to develop solutions. Ladd particularly enjoys watching his students come up with ideas, adapt their prior knowledge to the problems at hand, and innovate in new directions.

The program's success relies on the instructors following the students' interests and questions students drive the learning process. This flexible strategy encourages students to take ownership of their learning and embrace the rituals of trial and error as an essential part of it.

As the Urban Homesteading program grows and evolves, it promises to provide Shelton students with a unique and enriching educational experience. Ladd now envisions Urban Homesteading as the cornerstone of an expansive Outdoor Education program, spanning Pre-K through 12th grade and anchoring the schools long-term vision for sustainability.

Thank you to the Shelton Parents' Association and Shelton parents for supporting this and other Shelton programs.

Saved by the Stampede: Shelton Parents' Association Raises Funds For Students, Programs and Teachers

The Shelton School Parents' Association (SPA) raised money at the 2025 Stampede benefit auction on April 4 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. Displayed prominently in the dining hall, the piece serves as a daily reminder of Sheltons dedication to educating students with learning differences and its commitment to Academics, Athletics, Fine Arts and STEM.

A Collaborative Artistic Vision

The project was a true collaborative effort. Kellie Sirna, Shelton parent and founder of Studio 11 Design, led the design execution, helping bring the vision to life as a thoughtful reflection of Sheltons vibrant and supportive community. Middle School art teacher Kathleen Goree and Shelton parent Aphrodite Paulos designed the initial layout, while Christy ONeal, an in-house artist at Lou Verne by Studio 11 Design, brought the vision to life with her artistic expertise. The Aphrodite and Sam Paulos Foundation played a key role in making the project possible with a generous contribution.

This installation is deeply personal to me. Shelton isnt just where our children learn; its a community we pour our hearts into, said Sirna. We are not just supporters. We are mothers who are grateful for the opportunity to play a part in its ongoing legacy. Looking ahead to Sheltons 50th anniversary in 2026, this piece serves as a foundation for future traditions, and Im especially proud that our sons will be part of that celebration, continuing the legacy weve helped shape.

The Meaning Behind the Artwork

In 2022, a dedicated group of teachers, administrators, and parents set out to create something truly special an art installation that reflects Sheltons vibrant community. Inspired by a University of Oregon sports installation, the project evolved into a collaborative assemblage art piece featuring a large, illuminated S in Shelton Charger blue and white.

Standing 27 feet wide and 10 feet tall, the installation highlights the four key pillars of Sheltons educational approach:

Academics Igniting intellectual curiosity through a multisensory approach to learning.

Athletics Instilling resilience and teamwork in students.

Fine Arts Nurturing creativity, empathy, and confidence.

STEM Equipping students with critical thinking skills for the ever-evolving world.

The artwork is composed of custom-made and found objects carefully selected to symbolize these core aspects of Shelton's identity. Embedded within the piece are Montessori materials and STEM elements, representing Sheltons unique educational approach. The overarching message is that Fine Arts, Athletics and Academics work together to create a well-rounded, dynamic learning environment that makes Shelton a special place.

Shelton Executive Director Suzanne Stell says that the artwork embodies Shelton's commitment to making a difference in the lives of students who learn differently. Every day, it reminds students that their unique ways of learning are strengths to be celebrated and that confidence, perseverance and a love for learning open endless possibilities.

Scottish Rite for Children Collaborates with Shelton School on Groundbreaking Shoulder Study

On March 25, researchers from Scottish Rite for Children partnered with student-athletes from the Shelton School to evaluate a Return-to-Play (RTP) test battery focused on upper extremity development and rehabilitation. The study was led by Dr. Sophia Ulman, Division Director of the Movement Science Laboratory at Scottish Rite for Children.

The purpose of the study is to assess a RTP test battery for adolescent patients recovering from shoulder stabilization surgery, as well as healthy adolescent athletes. While the test battery has been validated at the collegiate level, Scottish Rite has now received funding from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation to evaluate its effectiveness in a high school population.

This research addresses a critical gap in sports medicine: although many young athletes return to sport after shoulder surgery, a significant number experience recurrent instability or require revision procedures especially in contact sports. Currently, most return-to-play decisions are made based on time since surgery, not functional readiness. This study aims to shift that approach by using objective testing to assess shoulder strength, power and stability.

Thanks to Dr. Ulman, Shelton's Director of Athletic Training Krystal Cunningham, Shelton Athletic Director Alan Burt and the Shelton student-athletes who participated in the study.

Accessing College Accommodations for Students with Learning Differences

By Debbie Knox, M.Ed.

Director of College and Career Advising, The Shelton School

For students with learning differences, college presents both new opportunities and challenges. A key to success is securing necessary accommodations. Unlike high school, where accommodations are provided under IEPs and 504 Plans, colleges operate under different laws, requiring students to take an active role in requesting accommodations.

Heres what students and families need to know about accessing accommodations in college:

1. Understand the Difference: K-12 vs. College

In high school, accommodations are provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

In college, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 still apply, but students must self-advocate and submit documentation to request accommodations.

2. Obtain Proper Documentation

Colleges typically require recent documentation, often within the past three years. This can include:

A psychoeducational evaluation (The Shelton Evaluation Center provides evaluations: 972-774-1772, ext 2243.)

A letter of diagnosis outlining the learning difference and recommended accommodations

A high school 504 Plan or IEP (helpful, but not sufficient on its own)

3. Research the Colleges Disability Services Office

Visit the Disability Services Office (DSO) when touring colleges.

Check the college website for DSO contact information, forms, guidelines and deadlines.

Apply to Disability Services and request accommodations before classes begin.

4. Be Aware of Common Accommodations

Extended time on tests

Note-taking assistance or permission to record lectures

Alternative testing environments (e.g., a quiet room)

Access to audiobooks or text-to-speech technology

Priority registration

Reduced course load

5. Encourage Self-Advocacy

Unlike high school, parents cannot advocate for students in college.

Students must take the lead in managing their accommodations:

Meet with professors to introduce themselves.

Explain their learning difference and needs in a confident manner.

Utilize campus resources such as tutoring centers or academic coaching.

Accessing accommodations in college requires preparation, organization and self-advocacy. Students who take these steps set themselves up for success. Start early, stay informed and embrace your learning differences as strengths.

Shelton Theatre Arts Presented 'Footloose'

The stage came alive in February as Shelton Theatre Arts delivered a high-energy performance of the beloved musical Footloose! With a cast and crew of 79 students, this production was packed with electrifying dance numbers, powerful vocals and the unforgettable spirit of the 1980s.

The accomplished cast brought iconic songs to life, including the rebellious anthem "Footloose" and the uplifting "Lets Hear It for the Boy." Senior Charlie Raynaud led the talented ensemble as Ren McCormack, bringing passion and energy to the stage. Reese Olsen shone as Ariel Moore, the fiery preachers daughter, while Keegan McGehearty added humor and charm as Willard. Jen Jen Dayton, playing Ariels best friend Rusty, wowed audiences with her standout performance, and Dylan Tompkins gave a moving portrayal of Rev. Shaw Moore, the conflicted town leader. Shelton Upper School English and Film teacher Joe Mallick authoritatively played Principal Harry Clark.

This collaborative production showcased the dedication and talent of Sheltons students and staff, from vibrant choreography to seamless set changes. Every detail contributed to an unforgettable show!

Congratulations to the entire Footloose team for putting on a fantastic production that had audiences dancing in their seats!

The event brought together students, educators and professionals to explore the principles of ethics and their application across various fields.

The day began with welcome remarks from Shelton Student Council President Ford Myers, followed by an introduction from Sheltons Executive Director, Suzanne Stell. Shelton alumnus Nathan England, Class of 2005 and now a commercial real estate agent with Wynmark Commercial Real Estate Group, presented the Charge For the Day, setting the tone for the discussions that followed. Guard your reputation with your life, he told the juniors and seniors. Reflect on your values and what matters to you most. Do what you say, underpromise and overdeliver. Be true to your values even when it's inconvenient.

The keynote speaker, Bob Mong, former President of the University of North Texas at Dallas and former Editor of The Dallas Morning News, delivered a powerful address titled Living a Life of Integrity. Drawing on his wealth of experience, Mong inspired students to incorporate ethical principles into their personal and professional lives.

I suspect all of you know the difference between right and wrong," he told students. "The best compass for figuring that out is really your heart. And so listen to it. Ethics often has to do with doing more than you have to do.

Mong encouraged students to approach their college and career decisions with a sense of balance, resilience and ethical awareness. Acknowledging the pressures and excitement that come with these transitions, he emphasized the importance of bravery in the face of temptation and self-awareness in personal growth. All of you are smart enough to be successful in life, Mong said. But in addition to intelligence, which is so important, just as important is paying attention to your temperament and how you work with others.

He highlighted the value of introspection, a strong work ethic and ethical decision-making, reminding students that those who work harder often achieve more. Temperament, desire, a good ethical head on your shoulders matched with your intelligence and you'll be fine," he concluded.

Engaging Panel Discussions
Following a short break, attendees participated in panel rotations, which allowed them to explore ethics in three areas:

Ethics & Social Media panelists:

Dr. Jane Tan, assistant professor of Information Technology & Operations Management at SMUs Cox School of Business

Wil Murphy, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations at K Strategies Group

Ethics & Engineering panelists:

Rick Hart, SMUs Director of Athletics

Shakiel Randolph, former SMU football student-athlete and former Kansas City Chiefs player who now serves as SMUs Director of Business Operations within the Athletics Department

Evan Grant, a sports journalist who has been covering the Texas Rangers and Major League Baseball for The Dallas Morning News since 1997

Each panel engaged students in meaningful dialogue about the ethical challenges and opportunities in these fields.

Interactive and Reflective Activities
After lunch, students delved into ethical dilemmas and participated in group discussions, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. An interactive activity encouraged participants to apply what they had learned and reflect on their own values.

The symposium concluded with a final charge to carry forward the days lessons and make integrity a cornerstone of their future endeavors.

Shelton Engineering Students Developed "Charger Recharger" from Recycled Materials

Shelton Engineering and Film teacher Tripp Givens is leading the charge in sustainability with his students' creation of the "Charger Recharger." The invention turns recycled materials into 3D printer filament, showcasing the ingenuity and environmental consciousness of the Shelton Class of 2024.

The Charger Recharger can repurpose PET bottles that would otherwise wind up in a landfill into usable 3D printer filament. This allows students to create prototypes, lab parts and other projects using items that would otherwise be considered trash.

The engineering students began by researching existing designs online, using CAD software to modify them and then brought their vision to life through 3D printing. A highlight of the project was their resourcefulness in repurposing parts from a broken 3D printer to build the machine. They also constructed a device to cut PET bottles into uniform widths using a combination of wood, 3D-printed parts, and other recycled components. Their ingenuity extended to developing methods for preparing bottles for recycling, laying the foundation for future sustainable projects.

Several Shelton alumni played key roles in the Charger Recharger's development, including Alexander Arens, who is currently studying engineering at Purdue University, and Ben Stafford, now pursuing engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Alumni Jack Jones and Will Killebrew also made significant contributions while at Shelton.

Current engineering students are excited to take the project further by collaborating with Sheltons STEM Club, led by Sydney Davis, in their recycling efforts. Together, they plan to brainstorm creative ideas for useful things to 3D print, possibly even creating a display to showcase their work. The Outdoor Club will also join the recycling initiatives, making it a school-wide effort.

Givens is already thinking about the future, with a goal of creating a second machine made entirely from recycled materials. As sustainability becomes a key focus, the Charger Recharger serves as a beacon of innovation, community involvement and environmental consciousness at Shelton.

Shelton School Is Hosting a Preschool and Kindergarten Fall Admission Event on October 19 at 3 p.m.

The Shelton School is hosting a Preschool and Kindergarten Fall Admission event on October 19, 2024, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at 17301 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75252.
