PROGRAMS OFFERED AT THE LIBRARY

Libraries throughout the country are making a comeback.

During a period of time when the United States economy is struggling, libraries have experienced a resurgence in popularity, which can be partially attributed to all of the free or inexpensive programs and events they offer that are open to the public, Hall said.

"We have become much busier, which is wonderful," Hall said. "Libraries are changing and are now offering many different programs that are appealing to so many more people. The ones that don't want to just borrow a book can now take advantage of other things."

The University Park Public Library offers a variety of free activities for the community throughout the year, including reading programs, craft events, and guest speakers, Swope said. The library is focusing on offering family-friendly events that appeal to all age groups.

Recently, there was a rap-style Poetry Slam event at the library that had a good turnout of teenagers from throughout the community, Swope said. Mike Guinn, who has has received national acclaim for his performance poetry, was the featured speaker at the poetry slam.

“The event was very successful,” Swope said. “It’s going to lead to other things to get more teen involvement.”

Several weekly activities will start at the library later this month, including a "Humongous Reading Club" on Wednesdays and a "Story Time for Toddlers" on Thursdays.

After moving to its new location in The Plaza at Preston Center, the library hopes to generate more community involvement by offering an even bigger selection of events and activities throughout the year, Hall said.
