Fall is officially in the air! Bring on the crisp mornings, golden leaves, and the perfect excuse to wear cozy, polished sweaters. About a month ago, I spent some time in Aspen with Avara, and it reminded me how much I love layering chic knits for the season. The combination of textures, rich colors, and effortless pieces make you feel put together without even trying. There’s something inherently timeless about a great sweater. It can be comfortable, versatile, and elegant all at once. The new Elevation AVARA collection that we shot in Aspen is everything you need for the perfect fall sweater style. This season, I’m leaning into sophisticated sweater looks; think knit dresses, structured skirts, and versatile layers that move seamlessly from brunch to dinner. Whether you’re heading to a weekend getaway or out on the town, these styles offer warmth, texture, and timeless elegance. The beauty of investing in elevated sweaters and classic layering pieces is that they never go out of style, and they provide the perfect base for experimenting with fall accessories like scarves, boots, and statement jewelry.

1. The Sweater Dress

A classic knit dress is one of the simplest ways to achieve a sophisticated sweater look while staying comfortable. This deep burgundy version is a unique twist on a classic style. It's so flattering and chic. I paired it with suede boots and layered a cream cable-knit sweater over my shoulders for a simple way to add dimension and warmth. Add a matching clutch, and it’s ready for everything from lunch with friends to an evening out. The beauty of a sweater dress is that it works equally well for casual weekend outings or more formal gatherings when styled thoughtfully.

What I love most about sweater dresses is their versatility. Swap the boots for tall leather riding boots and a wool coat, and the outfit transforms into something perfect for a day of exploring the city. Pair it with a scarf or delicate gold jewelry, and you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion. Knit dresses also offer a flattering silhouette for layering. You can belt at the waist to add definition, or add tights for warmth.

2. The Sweater + Midi Skirt Combo

For a refined daytime look, try a fitted knit top with a structured plum/brown brown midi skirt. I love pairing an ivory sweater with a faux-leather button-front skirt. It's the perfect modern twist on fall neutrals. This combination is versatile, polished, and perfect for a variety of occasions, from work meetings to brunches or evening dinners.

The key is balance: a slightly fitted top with a structured bottom keeps the silhouette sleek, while layered outerwear such as a trench coat, wool blazer, or cropped jacket adds sophistication. Accessories are equally important. Neutral heels, ankle boots, or knee high boots create an elongating effect, and a structured handbag adds a chic touch. When it comes to jewelry, delicate necklaces or a statement watch complement the outfit without competing with the textures and colors.

3. Sweater Weather with Friends

And of course, fall style is even better shared! During our Aspen trip, friends brought their own take on cozy chic. From patterned sweaters to belted cardigans with denim and boots. It’s a reminder that sweater season is all about personal style. Shop the full Elevation collection here.

Style Tip

When styling elevated sweater looks, focus on balance. Pair oversized knits with more fitted bottoms or cinch the waist with a belt to define your shape. Mixing materials like wool, leather, and suede adds visual interest, while accessories like a structured bag, statement earrings, or knee-high boots keep the outfit elevated. I would also focus not only on texture but also tone. Choose warm, saturated shades like wine, cream, camel, and chocolate. Layering different tones of the same color family can make it visually cohesive. For example, pairing a camel sweater with chocolate-toned boots and a cream scarf creates depth without feeling heavy. The result is polished yet relaxed which is perfect for fall.
