Last week I told you about our wonderful trip to Reno, Nevada. You can read about the details in this blog post. Today, I am continuing the journey by detailing the second half of the trip to Lake Tahoe, Nevada and California. Did you know this beautiful mountain resort straddles two states? Check out why we marveled at skiing while enjoying this magnificent lake view.

Lake Tahoe is a short drive from Reno, Nevada. It only takes an hour to get there. If you are just heading west to ski, be sure to fly into Reno, Nevada with Southwest Airlines from Dallas. They have a non-stop making your trip so easy. Of course we think you should spend a few days in Reno first before heading out. You’ll take Route 50 to get to Lake Tahoe.

We checked in and stayed at the beautiful Landing Resort & Spa. This is luxury redefined. The rooms are stunning and have a beautiful view of the lake. The bathrooms have heated floors and towel racks. The shower comes with steam capability making it a sauna. You will definitely appreciate this after a day on the slopes! There is a fireplace in each room. LUXURY! Pete and I tried a little trick before our ski adventure. We took a private yoga class at Lake Tahoe Yoga. We highly recommend this to get your muscles warm and ready. It really worked! Our teacher scaled the class to our ability and it was such a peaceful way to enter the mountain portion of our trip. Namaste!

We explored South Lake Tahoe a bit and discovered Vikingsholm, Heavenly Village, Marcus Ashley Gallery and more. Lunch was at the Blue Angel Cafe and you can tell, the locals love to gather here. I highly suggest the Beef Bourguignon. How about the Bloody Mary’s in mason jars? Everyone was so friendly! What a quaint place with beautiful views. Be sure to check out Jimmy’s at the Landing Resort & Spa. We had all of our breakfasts there and enjoyed a lovely dinner as well. Delicious! We also indulged in a couples massage at the spa. The Landing Resort & Spa has everything you need including a shuttle to the mountain.

Pete and I enjoyed a full day of skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort. The interesting aspect of skiing this mountain is that part of it is in Nevada and part of it is in California. You can actually cross state lines while skiing. We rented all of our ski equipment at Heavenly Sports Rentals which is right at the Gondola lift and so convenient. The staff is so friendly and very knowledgeable. I think its been 10 years since I skied and a lot has changed with ski technology. From there we walked out, picked up our ski passes (new technology on this too – the ski card stays in your pocket) and headed up the mountain on the gondola. You’re not going to believe this… It was like riding a bike. We skied all day long and had so much fun! In fact, Pete and I did 11 runs. We had a lovely lunch on the mountain and hardly wanted to leave. Of course at the end of the day we enjoyed some Apres Ski beverages and live music at the base of the mountain before heading to dinner at Freshies Restaurant & Bar. It’s a delicious Hawaiian inspired food spot. Be sure to save room for dessert – we had the coconut cream pie. YUM!

Interesting fact: South Lake Tahoe is in California; Tahoe is in Nevada. What’s the difference? Gambling. You can gamble in Nevada and there are hotels and resorts with casinos. We stayed in California. The fun fact you can tell everyone is that you skied from Nevada to California (or vice versa) in one day! Both states enjoy the lake.

If you need suggestions on what to pack for your ski trip, just click here to read this blog post. We had such a good time and can’t wait to head back. I bet it’s absolutely gorgeous in the summer too. What a perfect destination for a family trip!

Where else can you ski and have this stunning view of a beautiful lake?  xoxo – Tanya
