Does Your Dry Cleaner Know Your Name?

In a city the size of Dallas, you’re not likely to encounter a family-owned business that remembers individual clients’ names. However, that’s exactly what you’ll find at Park Cities’ Swiss Cleaners.

With more than 30 years of experience in the dry cleaning industry, Zal and Sham Thawerbhoy, owners of Swiss Cleaners, have made a name in the business by providing quality, environmentally friendly dry cleaning service and by building a relationship with the local community. As decade-long residents of Highland Park and with two of their three children having graduated from HPISD, the Thawerbhoys have good reason to stay connected to the neighborhood.

Carol Wright, a 15-year resident of Park Cities, needed a new dry cleaner after moving to the area. She found Swiss Cleaners, and has been using the business ever since. Wright said that she not only loves the way Swiss Cleaners cares for her clothes, but how they are so accommodating to every customer.

“They've always been so friendly and make a point to know you by name,” she said of Swiss Cleaners.

Wright recalled a day when, after dropping off her clothes, she got a phone call from Sham asking about a spot on one of the shirts. Sham called to get more information and to let Wright know about special care the shirt needed. “She knew it was one of my favorite shirts since I brought it in so frequently, and she took the time to ask the necessary questions to properly clean the shirt,” Wright said. “I really appreciated the call and the fact that they go out of their way to give personalized service. They’re so helpful and they do great work,” she said.

Andrew Graybill, director and associate professor at the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies at SMU, is a longtime Swiss customer for several reasons.

According to Graybill, he began using Swiss Cleaners for the convenience factor, as he lived just around the corner during the 2004-2005 academic year as a research fellow at the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies at SMU. While convenience was his motivating factor for trying out Swiss Cleaners, he also felt strongly about the business’ green cleaning methods.

“Convenience was key [when we began using Swiss Cleaners], but the green factor was also very, very important, in part because I teach environmental history, but also because we had an 18-month-old daughter at the time [she's now 10], and I had started to think in different ways about environmental health,” Graybill said.

After spending six years in Nebraska and moving back to Dallas in 2011, Graybill returned to Swiss Cleaners. “I began using Swiss again, as I’d had such a positive experience with them in the past.”

“The environmental considerations remain vital, but I also really like the Thawerbhoy family, both the parents who own the shop, and their three children,” Graybill said. “I’ve told friends from Nebraska that among the many things I’ve come to appreciate about Dallas, my cleaners are near the top. And that’s the truth.”
