SPCA of Texas Donate on North Texas Giving Day

The SPCA of Texas is pleased to take part in the tenth annual North Texas Giving Day on September 20, 2018! Every year, the people of North Texas come together to help thousands of local non-profits for North Texas Giving Day, including the SPCA of Texas. On that day, gifts made through the SPCA of Texas' profile page on the North Texas Giving Day website will be matched dollar for dollar up to $75,000 provided by an anonymous donor as well as multiplied by bonus funds and prizes between 6 a.m. and midnight, for an 18 hour giving extravaganza!

Our donors' generosity makes it possible for us to rescue, heal and find homes for more than 35,000 animals each year. It takes about $800 to care for the animals that come through our doors. If nine people give the average donation, they give us the ability to say yes to do whatever it takes to save an animal's life. Whether it's $10 or $200, every dollar helps save animals.

Not available on September 20? This year you can schedule your gift to the SPCA of Texas between September 10 and September 20. Your gift will then be processed on North Texas Giving Day when it will be matched and multiplied with bonus funds. There's also a new way for you to help the SPCA of Texas raise money this North Texas Giving Day. It's easy for you and your friends to raise money by creating a personalized FUNdraising page by going to the North Texas Giving Day website.

North Texas Giving Day is powered by Communities Foundation of Texas, a 64-year-old community foundation that has produced North Texas Giving Day since 2009. As the largest community foundation in Texas and one of the largest in the nation, Communities Foundation of Texas works to strengthen the community through a variety of charitable funds and strategic grantmaking initiatives. Since 2009 Communities Foundation of Texas' North Texas Giving Day has pumped more than $155 million, for more than 2,500 local nonprofits, into the North Texas Community. It is the largest single-day giving event in the nation. The foundation professionally manages more than 950 charitable funds for families, companies, foundations and nonprofits and has awarded more than $1.6 billion in grants since its founding in 1953.

During last year's North Texas Giving Day, 2,323 individuals made 2,366 gifts to the SPCA of Texas, and the organization exceeded its goal of $250,000, raising $287,838 and earning a $30,000 match!

The community's support is truly inspiring, and gives us all renewed energy to live our mission: to provide every animal exceptional care and a loving home. North Texas Giving Day is not just a day. It's a movement that inspires and unites tens of thousands of donors across the world to support their favorite North Texas causes online through www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org.

Texas summers bring brutally hot conditions, but more than just the heat can be harmful to your pet during the summer. Memorial Day, Labor Day and the Fourth of July are the top three holidays for pet emergencies because of outdoor activities where pets run loose. Firecrackers, with their loud, startling and scary noises, can also be harmful to your pets' well-being. The SPCA of Texas recommends these tips to make your pets' Fourth of July a safe one:

  • Keep your pets indoors with the air conditioner running and the windows closed or keep a radio on to help mask out as much noise as possible. Also try distracting them: follow their regular routine, play with them or crate them up until the fireworks are over. Make sure they have current tags and a microchip to ensure their safe return should they bolt out of fear.
  • Heat is another reason to keep your pets indoors this summer. Also, be sure your pet has access to cool water at all times and never leave pets in parked vehicles.
  • Be aware of neighborhood pranksters throwing firecrackers over your fence to frighten your pet. Also be careful using sparklers, as they can burn animals as well as people.
  • Allow your pets the freedom to seek refuge under the bed, behind the toilet or in the back of the closet. This may soothe them more than cuddling with them.
  • Your dog may not want to accompany you to the local fireworks extravaganza. He may prefer some nice quiet time in your lap after everything is over. Also, during the festivities, keep your dog busy with chew toys.
  • If your pet gets especially stressed or your neighborhood is particularly noisy, you may wish to talk to your veterinarian about the practicality of using tranquilizers or homeopathic remedies.
  • Even if the proper precautions are taken, some animals may develop deeply rooted fears of loud noises after fireworks displays or thunderstorms. Commonly seen effects include: shaking; trembling; excessive drooling; barking; howling; trying to hide or get into or out of the house, fence, or other enclosure; refusing to eat food; loss of bladder or bowel control or temporary diarrhea. If you notice these symptoms in your pet, contact your veterinarian for help.
  • As always, to keep your pets happy and healthy, make sure your pets are spayed and neutered, that they are up to date on appropriate vaccinations and that you take your pet to the veterinarian for regular check-ups. To learn more or schedule an appointment at one of the SPCA of Texas' low-cost spay/neuter & wellness clinics, please visit www.spca.org/clinicservices or call 214-742-7722.
