Anne Marie's Lasagna

My Sister in Law makes this and it is awesome.  It also is much better the second day...

½ lb. sweet or hot Italian sausage

1 lb. ground beef

½ cup chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 tbs. Sugar

1 tbs. Salt

1 ½ tsp. dried basil leaves

½ tsp. pepper

¼ cup chopped parsley

4 cups canned tomatoes, undrained

2 cans tomato paste

1 tbs. Salt

12 curly ready-bake lasagna noodles

1 (15 oz.) cottage cheese

1 egg, ½ tsp. salt

1 lb. mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced

¾ cup parmesan

· Remove sausage meat from outer casing. In 5 qt. Dutch oven, over medium heat, sauté sausage, beef (break up w/ wooden spoon), onion and garlic. Brown for 20 minutes.

· Add sugar, 1 tablespoon. Salt, basil, pepper and ½ the parsley, mix well.

· Add tomatoes, tomato paste and ½ cup water. Mash together. Bring to boil, reduce heat, simmer, and stir occasionally – 1 ½ hours.

· Pre-heat oven to 375.

· In medium bowl, mix cottage cheese, egg, remaining parsley and ½ tsp. salt.

· In bottom of a 13 x 9 baking dish, spoon 1 ½ cups sauce, layer w/ 6 lasagna. Spread ½ cottage cheese mixture on top. Top w/ 1/3 of mozzarella. Spoon 1 ½ cups sauce over cheese. Sprinkle w/ ¼ cup Parmesan. Repeat layering – ending w/ 1 ½ cups sauce sprinkled w/ Parmesan. Top w/ rest of mozzarella and Parmesan.

· Cover w/ foil. Bake 25 minutes. Remove foil. Bake 25 minutes more. Cool.
