Every kitchen remodel starts the same way — with an idea. Maybe it's more counter space, a better layout for the way your family actually cooks, or cabinets that finally feel like you. After 15+ years designing and building kitchens (including plenty right here in the Park Cities area), here are a few things I always tell homeowners before they get started.

1. Start with how you live, not just how it looks in photos. It's easy to fall in love with a kitchen on Pinterest and forget to ask whether it actually works for your household. Before we talk finishes or fixtures, I always start by understanding how a family really uses their kitchen — who cooks, how you entertain, where the mess tends to happen. The best kitchens are designed around real life, not just a photo.

2. Design + Build means one less headache. A lot of homeowners don't realize they can hire a single team to handle both the design and the construction, instead of coordinating between a separate designer and contractor who've never worked together. It typically means fewer miscommunications, a smoother timeline, and one point of contact if something needs to change mid-project.

3. Cabinetry is the decision that shapes everything else. More than any other single choice, your cabinetry sets the tone — and the budget — for the whole kitchen. Custom cabinetry gives you the most flexibility for an awkward layout or a specific style, but it's worth deciding early, since it affects your timeline and nearly every other selection that follows.

4. Timelines are almost always longer than people expect. Between design, material lead times, and construction, a full kitchen remodel is rarely a quick process — and that's normal. Going in with realistic expectations (and a good contingency plan for material delays) makes the whole experience far less stressful.

5. A remodel should serve you now, not just resale value later. It's tempting to design purely around what might help resale someday. But most homeowners live in their kitchen for years before they ever sell — so I always encourage clients to prioritize what will make daily life better first. A well-designed kitchen you love tends to hold its value anyway.
