One of our clients was at seminar last weekend and received an email that appeared to be from someone she knew.

The “from line” included the name of a familiar business associate, while the “email address line” was the associate’s regular domain (example: @dallaspartnerit.com). The subject was “View This Document,” which wasn’t suspicious to her because they are doing business together.

Our client opened the email from her phone and clicked on the link to open the document. She was prompted for her Google passwords, which she put in the login box.

She was, in technical terms, “phished” or “spoofed.” She gave hackers access to her Google accounts which included all of her contacts. Within a matter of minutes, her contacts were getting the same message. Those who clicked and signed in to the fake login page gave away their credentials as well.

Be careful of a few things.

Beware of clicking links inside an email. We recommend that you hover over the link and look at the URL of the link before clicking.

If you receive an email with a subject line like “Documents,” “View These Documents” or “View This,” be suspicious. It is most likely a hoax.

If you show up at a login screen, it’s typically bad news. In this case, the client was checking her mail via Google, so why would Google ask her to log in again?

One easy tip to prevent phishing or spoofing.

We recommend a two-step verification for email. In her case, we set up a two-step authentication for Google and Gmail. This process will protect her across all of her devices, as she regularly depends on her iPad, iPhone and laptop computer.

Frustrated with choosing the right laptop? Don’t want to spend more than you have to? Looking for the best quality for your dollar? This is the series of articles for you, my friend! Throughout the course of the next few weeks, I will be going over each type of laptop from Net and Chromebooks, to business grade laptops all the way to high quality gaming titans! I will compare the best available laptop from each category and even give you the best place to shop for them.

The first stop is the Netbook realm. These are those insanely low priced laptops that get you in the door to most large retail electronics stores only to be upsold with a thousand dollar laptop that you may or may not utilize. The question is, is this a good fit for you, or do you need a “real” laptop?

A netbook is a portable network computer. Its main purpose is browsing the web and checking email. A tablet with a keyboard, you can’t expect to run Photoshop or even Publisher on these bad boys. On the flipside, a lot of my residential clients tell me that web browsing and email is all they do and that is exactly who this is for.

Pros: Lightweight, not prone to virus infections (Chrome OS), simple user interface, low priced.

Cons: Microsoft Office is watered down (Mobile Office version on Chromebooks), Small screen size, Smaller range of programs available, Cannot multitask resource intensive programs.

Now to the comparison. Most of these netbooks run on “Chrome OS” which is an operating system similar to Android which most of us use on our tablets and smartphones. This OS is very basic, easy to use and is not resource intensive, which allows them to use the same processors (CPUs) as you will find on some phones and tablets. Windows 8.1 is also available and you can run the Microsoft Office Suite (which will also cost you half as much as the computer) but with the extra risk of infection from viruses. That fact will lead you to need a third party anti-virus software available at Partner I.T. These are my rankings of each brand’s top netbook on the market now:

Different HP Stream Options, best laptops 2015 article

5. HP Stream 11 (MSRP $199.99)- The main reason this is ranked last on my list is that it wouldn’t turn on at the store and when I asked about it, the salesman told me it’s been like that and they didn’t bother to fix it. HP usually doesn’t put much effort in their consumer grade products, so I wasn’t surprised. Nonetheless, this laptop comes with a 2.16 GHz processor and Windows 8.1 and a 32 GB Solid State Hard Drive, which is double what the Chromebooks offer. You can also purchase a larger 13” screen compared to the 11” standard for an extra $20 (HP Stream 13). Another cool feature is that they have multiple color cases, which should be fun for the kids. Yet, more fun when said kids get viruses for Partner I.T. to cleanup for you.

Toshiba Chromebook, best laptops 2015

4. Toshiba Chromebook CB-A3120 (MSRP $179.99) – Lowest priced for a reason. It may be tempting to grab this under $200 bait, but I have to tell you, I get Toshiba’s coming into my shop regularly and the quality is terribly low. Take it from someone who has been inside these toys and seen everything. The specs are on par with other Chromebooks, but I wouldn’t risk my money on one of these.

Acer C720 Chromebook, best laptops 2015

3. Acer C720 Chromebook (MSRP $269.99) **currently on sale at Best Buy for $199.99**– This is a safer bet than a Toshiba. The Celeron 1.4 GHz Processor and 2GB of Ram with 16 GB storage is standard for most Chromebooks, but it is overpriced in my opinion. If you are looking at this Chromebook, you might as well spend a little extra to get a low consumer grade option. Acer makes a Windows 8.1 machine with twice the capability for around $299, and you can probably get one on sale for less.

ASUS C300-MA Chromebook, Best Laptops 2015

2. ASUS C300MA-DB01 Chromebook (MSRP $229.99) **currently on sale at Newegg.com for $209.99**– This is a decent buy. The Celeron 1.4 GHz Processor and 2GB of Ram with 16 GB storage is standard and found in a lot of tablets nowadays. The consumer reviews should speak for themselves at 4.5 stars out of 5. One advantage this laptop has over the others is that it has a larger, 13”, screen. So, if size was a top priority for you in your quest for a inexpensive laptop. Another great perk is that the battery life is better than any 13" Chromebook to date.

Samsung Series 3 Chromebook, Best Laptops 2015

1. Samsung Series 3 (MSRP 219.99) **currently on sale at Walmart for $199.99**– Samsung makes quality electronics and they are my favorite brand when it comes to consumer grade products. Yes, I am completely biased with this pick because 75% of my home electronics are Samsung. The only problem I ever had was finding an external part that broke because a client had dropped their Samsung laptop (which was a slick looking laptop prior to the tragedy). This Chromebook has the highest speed processor (Exynos CPU) at 1.7 GHz running a Chrome OS. At an MSRP of $219.99, the Series 3 is a no-brainer.

Stay tuned for another segment of the Best Laptops 2015, where we will be digging into consumer grade laptops for personal use. When you do decide on purchasing, give a call to us at Partner I.T. for moving your data from your old computer, and setting up any applications on your new purchase.

Laura has been a real estate agent for over ten years in which she compiled hundreds of contacts, all saved in outlook on her computer. She had recently signed contracts and other important documents stowed away on her hard drive. One day she woke up to this message on her computer screen: “Your files are encrypted by CryptoWall. To decrypt files you have to pay $500. If payment is not made in one weeks the cost of decrypting files will increase two times and will be $1000.”

“What?! This can’t be true.” She thought as she fooled around with her computer only to come to this brutal conclusion: all her files and contacts were being held ransom! 10 years of hard work and sourcing, all lost forever. This would take years to recoup all that information. The simple fact is that Laura is one of ten people who get infected with a virus each month. She finally gave in and paid the ransom, and that didn’t work either. She called Partner I.T. who was able to help after hours of labor. This ended up costing Laura over $1000 and could have been prevented for less than the cost of dinner at your favorite restaurant. If Laura had a backup solution and antivirus/firewall, she wouldn’t have even known what Cryptowall was.

Don’t be caught spending your hard earned money to get back your data or never see your data again. Even in this day and age, 30% of users still have not backed up their data! Are your one of them? If you are, take the pledge to implement a backup solution on “World Backup Day” at http://www.worldbackupday.com/en/ and give Partner I.T. a call to help you set it up. Check out the video below for even more information.

Surf safe and back up often!

Cloud computing is all the rage these days, and while some companies are moving their whole IT infrastructure to the cloud, many others are choosing to streamline their businesses by moving individual business applications.   If you are considering moving any of your company’s software applications “to the cloud,” make sure to consider these 5 tips BEFORE pulling the trigger:

1. Back It Up!

Migrating data to any new location is a mess, and anything can (and usually does) go wrong. Therefore, make sure you have good, recent backup copies of everything before you make the move.

2. Maintain An On-site Copy

At first, moving to the cloud can be a bit scary. What can help mitigate the risk (and the fear) is keeping a local, on-site copy of your data and network image on an NAS (network-attached storage) device. That way you have a local on-site copy in addition to the working cloud copy.

3. Have A “Plan B” To Access The Internet

One of the biggest questions about moving IT to the cloud is “What if the Internet goes down?” To mitigate that fail point, have a business-class Internet connection as your initial and main way to connect, and then also have a second Internet connection service as a backup. If Verizon is your main connection, you might consider keeping a Time Warner wireless account as a backup.

 4. Use It As An Opportunity To Do Some Housekeeping

You could just copy and paste your files from your local machines into the cloud, but why not take this as an opportunity to reevaluate the structure and organization of that data? Here are some ideas:

  • Reevaluate and/or update your file-naming conventions and file organization. A good file-naming policy will make it much easier to find files and information. Also, consider reorganizing all the folders into smarter, more efficient categories.
  • Consider who will be using what and what levels of permissions are required to access files. Revisiting your permission levels will help keep sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.
  • Look at old files and consider deleting them or archiving them so they aren’t cluttering up your server and costing you money for storing and backing them up.

5. Phase The Move

Don’t try to migrate everything all at once. Create a transition plan and implement it. Make sure you move your files in bite-size pieces so the changes are easy to digest for your clients, employees, partners and everyone else involved. This also gives you the opportunity to test the water before taking the plunge, and it allows you to put out one fire at a time instead of having all systems down or broken.
